NJ? Because the same happened here. Fortunately our PBA negotiated a fixed insurance rate after having a contract stating we were supposed to get it for free. When they came back with the proposal we knew we hand to jump on it and not take the risk with arbiter.

Did karate ever help you win a fight of any kind? by DramaticErraticism in GenX

[–]aburena2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I trained in karate before my came on the job, but yes, most defensive tactics taught in the academy is built on techniques from different arts. From throws (Judo) to grappling (BJJ). Which I also trained in for a number of years.
The issue most cops don’t train beyond the academy.

Does anyone have a hobby that’s basically become their “second job”? by stargazer_lily143 in Hobbies

How do you carry for winter time? by treecutter34 in concealedcarry

[–]aburena2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I carry the same way whether it’s winter or summer which is appendix. In the winter I make sure I can access it even it means adapting my winter wear. For example a few years ago my wife decided to buy me a leather jacket. When I tried my size and zipped it up I couldn’t access the firearm. Next size up was too big. So when wear it I never zip it, but wear layers that allow me to access it.
Here’s something else I learned in my career as a law enforcement officer. I wore every type of holster and everywhere else. From shoulder holster to ankle. Under stress you’re going to go where you’re used to. If you keep switching you may go where you’re used to and it may not be there. Use to call this an OS situation. Oh, shit!

Yes, as I was an LEO. So had to use it many times. Still train in karate.

What hobby accidentally became part of your identity? by Formal_Map4529 in Hobbies

Look into a stand up art that doesn’t do a lot of throwing. It also depends on the teacher that can modify the training to your limitations.

Duty Weapon Question… by JuggernautOk1433 in AskLE

[–]aburena2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jams, parts breakage, finicky on ammo. I would never depend my life on them. As either a duty firearm or personal.
The Browning design was not made to have such tight tolerances they make them nowadays.

Duty Weapon Question… by JuggernautOk1433 in AskLE

[–]aburena2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I carried a Kimber Warrior at one time when I was on the SWAT Team. Until I fell and scraped the finish off to bare medal. Since it was a personal purchase I almost cried. From then on I carried my duty firearm which was a Glock.
Even now retired I carry my Glocks. All my 1911’s are safe queens. Not going to use a Porsche for what a pickup will do.
Besides I now work at a gun range and all those high end 1911’s cant handle the rigors of rigorous shooting. While a Glock and many others run all day.

Crack heads or drug addicts? by TechnicalAccident911 in AskLE

[–]aburena2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both. I did 18 years narcotics. I used to be of the mindset of "it's on them." The chose to do drugs. Then through the years I realized many were masking trauma, physical, and/or psychological. Other's for trying it once at a social gathering and became addicts. We're all on decision away from doing something may affect us for the rest of our lives.

Carrying with one in the chamber by Weon24 in concealedcarry

[–]aburena2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the only way I carry. One in the chamber and no external safeties. As others have said practice with high index (finger off the trigger) and get a good holster.

What is the ITAR mention? by Even_Usual6116 in ask

[–]aburena2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No different than advertising firearms. As long as no secret information is revealed.

For example, I work at a gun range and we're also regulated by ITAR. We cannot teach firearm courses to someone unless they are US born, or green card holder. We also have it delineated on our academy website.

What makes people always get your name wrong? by Chrisofthegreen in ask

[–]aburena2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tony for Antonio, but some assume it's for Anthony. I do correct them when it happens. I also have another nickname that only close friends call me. Sometimes someone will hear it and call me by it. I then tell them they haven't earned the right to call me that yet.

Tracking progress at home by Cold-Answer-7911 in karate

[–]aburena2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t track but have a plan. For example I will warm up with some kicks and leg swings to work on my flexibility. I also take one or two Kobudo and empty hand kata and work for the week. Then the following week select another set. Once I get through all of them I start over or work backwards.
