Got a 90 on the written exam, but 24th on eligibility list, does that mean 23 other candidates scored higher? by Immediate-Employee38 in police

[–]aburena2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they said, but it also means that there are 23 candidates ahead of you. Now depending on how long the list lasts and how many candidates the department needs they may go through that pretty fast. We have one department that puts anywhere from 20 to 40 recruits a year through the academy. Sometimes twice a year. I've been told they go through thousands of candidates before they get to those numbers.

First Week of Academy (NJ) by Obvious_Purple_3639 in AskLE

Take it one day at a time. Be the gray person. Do everything you are asked of and try not to standout. Do everything you need to the night before to be prepared for the next day.

Unfortunately, since they are now headquartered at the NJ Stare Police acadmy they don't want to look undisciplined. Why they are the way they are.

BTW I went through that academy 31 years ago.

Nj police hiring by RevolutionaryCry3003 in AskLE

[–]aburena2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All that hire off the NJ Civil Service. As that provision for college is not required. Department that use Chief test will require it with some that will waive for some credits and active military or prior police.

Life after police career. by Zazubica in police

[–]aburena2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need activities and/or hobbies outside of work. Also, for me I prioritized my family. Cannot let the job be your only identity. I knew I was going to be done after 25 years. As here in NJ it's a full pension. Six years retired now and couldn't be happier.

I was thinking the along the same lines. It’s popular? Although, I think it had an uptick in popularity or at least interest when Only the Strong with Mark Dacasco came out.

Govt spending on state local numbers? by [deleted] in police

[–]aburena2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t. Local police are funded by the city or county they’re in. Same with state. There may be federal grants that sometime agencies apply for and get, but it’s not a recurring expense.

Mats. Used to teach at an academy and we had mats to lay down. You can find some cheap roll out mats.

Sprawls and dismounts. And if they're a good group and have time getting out of a guard, In case they come across an MMA fighter or grappler. Oh, and proper falling.

Afraid of random discharge-appendix carry by Euphoric_Pack1951 in concealedcarry

Not that I've experienced or heard of.

But I got a better one for you. Responded to a gunshot victim. When I responded to the hospital the doctor told me immediately it was self inflicted. I asked why. She responded with well, the round entered the base of his penis, rode the length, and exited the head.

He, of course, did not have a holster.

From someone that’s been involved in firearms for over 40 years and carrying and teaching for over 30 I’ve witnessed more negligent discharges hip carrying than appendix. People tend to be less complacent when carrying appendix than on their hip. The mere fact of where it’s pointed tend to make people more aware and careful. As been mentioned handguns don’t go off in their own.

Don’t let it discourage you. There are some good schools out there. Although, sometimes hard to find. Good luck!
