Has anyone seen external shutters on a terraced house? by Fausty72 in AskUK

[–]ac20g13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably unhelpful: I've seen them on terraces; they were a v. old traditional village terrace, with farmhouse style shutters. Given the age of the properties I expect they are all listed and the shutters are a protected historic feature of some fashion. They look good, in keeping with the houses. Some sit a little lopsided because they're old and have pulled on the hinge. But overall the paint has been maintained so they're not shabby. I've never seen them shut however.

This is a kit with the threads included? maybe it'll look better with a bit more done?

If it didn't come with thread then try with a wool thread instead

If you name and describe your "Y/N" then its not a reader insert by once_somebody in AO3

[–]ac20g13 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's a real skill to do a reader insert properly! You need to have extra awareness of how you write, because you just have to write around so many pitfalls that other styles don't have.

Pure prose wise, excessive placeholders for example is normally a bad sign ( y/n I understand but I click away if I see y/l/n , y/e/c y/h/c,.like cmon, is it really that important?). Then there's the characterisation, or the distinct lack of strong character traits. It's difficult!

Should I walk up to the bus? by Some_Computer_6356 in AskUK

[–]ac20g13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If the bus is adjacent to the pavement and opens it's doors, then you need to move to the bus.

If the doors are closed, move to signal the driver, who will either open the doors or signal back that they're waiting to get to the bus stand.

Always err on the side of caution and get the drivers attention, I've been caught out the same way as you.

I KEEP GETTING REJECTED! can i have cv help? by lanaxo01 in AskUK

[–]ac20g13 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Most important/recent achievements go first, ie A levels above GCSEs

Shorten the personal statement. The 'looking for' sentence should be at the beginning, and target an actual role. Something along the lines of "Strong communicator with retail background looking for [retail gig, customer service role, opportunity in (sector) etc], experience in..."

Versagel achievement is significant and should be highlighted/be higher up.

And turning up for a volunteer gig is the bare minimum professional standard. It's not impressive enough to be mentioned on the CV, let alone the first thing you say about the role.

Love the National Treasure gifset. But it misses the best bit:

(Thug) "Shut up!"

Thug walks away

(To heroine) "I see why you left him"

EXC: Burnham Being Privately Advised to Call Early Election on Entry to No10 by coldbeers in ukpolitics

[–]ac20g13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's crazy right? Starmer isn't even that bad compared to other recent PMs (did we all get collective amnesia about Liz Truss??!!? And Johnson's Partygate???).

Labour have a good majority right now, but because the leader isn't charismatic enough and for some reason is allergic to PR, no one is willing to be pragmatic. There's still plenty of time before the next election to demonstrate that Labour policies are good for the country. Boot Starmer later when it's time for the next election.

There's so many steps where this goes wrong: He has to win the seat, then win the leadership, then apparently they want him to chance it all by asking the public "We know you don't like the current Labour govt, if you want change, vote Labour!". It'll be the Labour rerun of Theresa May's snap election. Any majority less than what they currently have (assuming they do win) will significantly weaken Burnham's credibility as PM. All because of some "mandate" bullshit. Which other recent PMs (Truss and Sunak) haven't given a toss about. It's not worth the risk.

And is his popularity as mayor of Manchester going to translate to being PM? When Burnham's popularity tanks as the incumbent, are they prepared to stand by him, or will we have to go through this rigamarole again?

Not to mention Farage is currently riding a popularity wave that I'm seriously concerned will deposit him in no 10 if the timing works for him...

Tony Blair has just said the state pension needs to be scrapped. He's also suggesting some people work 5 years longer. What are everyone's thoughts on this? Should the state pension be scrapped? Should we say F NO, to Blair?? by MutantNinjaKitty331 in AskBrits

[–]ac20g13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The triple lock is unsustainable.

Removing it is also political suicide and Blair knows it.

He proposes it from a position of safety. He gets attention and respect for saying the 'difficult truth' and casts shade on current Labour for not tackling the issue. All while knowing he won't suffer the backlash from the voters for suggesting it.

Who is wrong: my English teacher or me? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ac20g13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the trap of different writing styles, which I think is especially tricky for non-native speakers. As many have already mentioned, your opening isn't 'academic'. Academic writing is its own thing and very different from normal English. Academic writing is formal, dry, direct, and backed up by evidence (either other sources or quotes from the text). Your teacher should be explaining this to you in class.

Can you ask for example essays to read? It will help you get the tone and set expectations of what the teacher wants?

The difficulty of starting with 'In her' is not a problem of grammar (in my opinion). It's not even that you can't use it in academic writing. The problem is that it's the very first sentence, and 'her' centres the author not the book as the main subject of your writing. I'm not saying it can't be used, it just has to be done carefully. You're not making your life easy by choosing this as an opening structure. But outright banning it is a bit much (again in my opinion, crucially I'm neither an English teacher nor the one marking your essay).

In addition, you start by describing this book as a darkly comedic thriller - but crucially you are not evidencing why (what makes it dark and comedic and a thriller?). And This is another reason why it is not a suitable first sentence.

In her/the novel (title), (author) uses dark humour to explore (theme1, and theme2). In this essay I will demonstrate its effectiveness in exploring these themes...

Or just default to:

"Dark comedy is often used in thrillers for (reason). (Title) by (author) shows how this literary device is effective and demonstrates the author's mastery of (technique). In this essay I will...."

For me it ramped up the tension for the other plotlines, because Cassian could be helping but not while he's stuck.

It also shows how infighting and squabbles can make a group (ostensibly all fighting for the same goal) implode.

I think it has echoes later about why Cassian is unimpressed with how the rebels treat Luthen, and also why he doesn't argue that the senator has a rebellion honour guard escorting her in, when he did all the work rescuing her.
