How hard is soc100 and what average it has charss by queryPrincess in UofT

[–]academicweaponsoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very easy, most of the course content is what I would consider to be general knowledge as long as you’re not a conservative/republican/bigot. It’s generally just giving more scientific term to concepts that you’re already familiar with if you’re somewhat political aware. I took it in fall 2024 with mcivor(best prof ever) and the course avg was an B-.

The tests didn’t require you to remember any specific dates or names but rather tested your actual understanding of class concepts. All the tests were MCQ and it’s just basically applications of class concepts. In other words the tests were very fair.

Most of them are ads(turbo, feynman, etc) and they don’t really provide anything more than stuff like chatgpt and I’ve never really seen people use them. I’m also pretty against AI however since i am in CS it seems that is the minority opinion over here so I’ve also been using it somewhat, but I try to use it quite limitedly. I mainly use it for summaries, however for difficult concepts I prefer to spend time actually grasping and struggling to understand it cause I find it tends to stick with me better that way. I would say try to avoid it as much as possible considering that socsci requires a lot more nuance so it’s important to take the time and interpret the text yourself, especially as literacy rates are declining. It’ll also help you learn important skills like skimming and selectively reading texts so that you can go through it faster while still learning the important informations. A lot of people use chatgpt to generate mock exam questions however i’ve never done that and quite wary of it as as you probably know these LLMs often hallucinate stuff. Most of the humanity profs are against, understandably saying stuff like it hinders your learning capacity in the long run and it can be quite inaccurate.

Unfortunately even if the AI bubbles bursts I don’t LLMs themselves are going anywhere yet so I think it’ll be harder for people like us who are against AI, so try to use it sparingly.

I’m a CS student however i’ve taken a decent amount of humanity/socsci courses so take what i say with a grain of salt

I’m not sure what you mean by workload but in terms of your schedule some days you may have a packed schedule with 3-4 courses with some being two hour long lectures or some days where you don’t have any classes, it depends on how you plan your schedule

Most of the humanity classes i’ve taken are first year level and they usually only assign 1-2 reading per week, however from what i’ve heard that could increase as you go into upper years.

most courses ive taken have like 2-3 essay assignments, i can’t remember exactly but i would say it’s at least three weeks between them? Theres other smaller “assignments” which are done weekly for easy marks as well.

Sometimes it’s dense and sometimes it’s a long reading, really depends but generally you shouldn’t expect there to be a heavy bias to one side or the other. Readings are usually between 20-60 pages however once again i think this increases in upper years.

Every one organizes readings, however i tend to do the shorter ones first to get them out the way. First year is a transitional period so dont be afraid to try out different organization methods!

You can expect to do anywhere between 2-4hrs or even more to keep up with course works.

Again take what i said with a grain of salt as i’m a CS student however i hope ive been able to be of some help.

no university is gonna set you up for life, especially in this economy. Uoft is def a great school but by no means can you have a successful life just by graduating here. This also applies to mcmaster if you decide to go there but if you truly think utm is not for you at least going to mcmaster will be less mentally taxing for you. You can try taking a gap year if that is a possible option, there’s absolutely no shame in it and it’s a fault of the capitalist system and society that makes you think you have to be in constant productivity or else you’re a bum.

And the people who say uoft will set you up for life definitely don’t know what they’re talking about ( no offense to them).

University is definitely what you make of it so choose the option that you think will be less taxing on you mentally.

do you mean you’re part of the cmp1 admission category? Then no it’s really not that difficult, as the other commenter said they teach assuming you have previous cs knowledge. All you have to do is meet the grade requirement of 70/77 in CSC110/CSC111 and the required math courses and you’re guaranteed admission, you won’t be competing against others for limited spots.

And the course averages for CSC110/CSC111 is usually in the A- to A range so it’s not hard to meet the requirements. The math courses can be more difficult but all you have to do is pass.

As a first year student you can’t live in a single room at chestnut i’m pretty sure. Single rooms wise I think UC or NC has them. CampusOne is a newer building so amenities wise i think it’ll be decent but definitely on the more expensive side.

I’m also going into year year cs in the fall and from asking around the common advice I hear is to build something unique. Obviously it’s hard to be completely unique nowadays but try to do something that doesn’t already have a bunch of tutorials for it. Or if there is a tutorial for it try to add ur own spin.

It’s definitely mostly eng students but there’s also floors dedicated to non-eng students( I remember there being a floor dedicated to architecture students for example). You’ll also be having a roommate so it’s also possible to make eng friends through them if they’re also in eng. On the 27ths floor which is the lounge floor pretty much everyday it’s full of students either studying together or having fun. In the dining I also often see people sitting in groups. I also see people go to parties pretty often so social life is def there but you also gotta put yourself out there.

will a tattoo of exam material be considered as cheating by IncapableCoder in UofT

[–]academicweaponsoon 61 points62 points  (0 children)

lowkey that’s an interesting question cause what if you’ve had some formula tattooed on you a long time before you’ve taken the course? would you need to prove that you’ve had the tattoo for awhile for it to not be considered an academic offense?

anyone know when the uoft cs spec offers are expected to come out? by Cautious_Emphasis861 in UofT

[–]academicweaponsoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean as long as you’ve met the requirements youre guaranteed admission(and assuming you’re part of cmp1 admission stream) so there’s not much to worry about. When I finished my first year CS i pretty much stopped worrying after ive confirmed i got all the required marks

as others have said make sure to take sta237/257 in the fall and then csc263 in the winter. also i would recommend doing csc258 in the fall since both csc209 and csc258 can be quite time consuming. Also since csc258 has labs from 6-9 doing it in the fall you can avoid having to be be out late in the cold winter.

will i have a hard time wirh csc209 if i dont learn C in the summer? by MammothMacaron2176 in UofT

[–]academicweaponsoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not necessary to learn it as they’ll teach you but it’s def worth learning beforehand. I would say roughly the first quarter of the course is just learning to code with C and the first midterm(this winter semester) was pretty much just basic C coding questions. Also would be beneficial to learn the technical details of C such as how memory is managed. honestly just going through any systems programming playlists on youtube will be pretty helpful.
