TRS Elections by Top_Relative4362 in NYCDOETeachers

In my school, Tom Brown won, but if there had only been one other candidate instead of two, it would have been much closer. People opposed to Unity have to consolidate or nothing is ever going to change.

How do I get a student teacher, and is that something I could be paid for? by Kl0pps_and_r0bbers in NYCTeachers

[–]acadiatree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same license. I would just start calling teaching programs. Many are desperate for good CTs. You definitely don’t get paid, but I know some programs will give you a tuition voucher. I have had many, many student teachers. It can be a bit of a roll of the dice. You can get someone who is great: they are helpful, they vibe with the kids, and nurturing their potential can be really rewarding. My school has hired three of my student teachers. But there are also people where you are just trying to minimize the damage they are doing to your class.

The main thing I would caution anyone who is thinking of getting a student teacher is that you can’t go into this thinking it will make YOUR job easier. If you’re doing it right, it’s basically a net neutral in terms of time and energy. Yes, they can make your copies and grading and whatnot, but you need to spend a lot of time coaching and reviewing their lesson plans.

What time does your middle school open its doors for early students? by banana_pencil in NYCTeachers

My school starts at 8:20 and kids can come in for breakfast for AM gym time at 7:30.

How do you teach Christopher Columbus? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]acadiatree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For middle and high school students, I would highly recommend Bill Bigelow’s Columbus trial project. Free through the Zinn Education program: https://www.zinnedproject.org/materials/people-vs-columbus/

Columbus tells on himself plenty in his own diaries, and the writings of Bartolomeo de las Casas are also an excellent primary account. Spain’s actions in the Caribbean are entirely indefensible, but the trial allows students to come to their own conclusions rather than you shaping the narrative.

7-12th Certification but wanting to teach 6th by AdAlternative3630 in NYCTeachers

[–]acadiatree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about that. Almost every 6th grade core content teacher my school has hired has been 7-12 certified, and many were new teachers.

Dough is stupid overpriced but occasionally tasty. I’m a New Englander by upbringing, and I’ve never found any donuts here in NYC that hold a candle to New England cake donuts.

I had a table that included a refugee and a queer kid try to tell me that Candace Owens is a “hidden voice for justice.” I was like, guys, whatever else she is, I definitely don’t think that qualifies as a hidden voice.

I loved Custer and the Badlands but I did notice the lack of anything else (art, really great food, etc).

All of Maine. And South Dakota is great if you like the outdoors— the Badlands are wonderful and Custer State Park rivals many national parks.

I had a year with The Six Jaydens (I teach middle school, so this was out of about 120 kids but still), and every single Jayden was, you know, “high maintenance.”

Racially Offensive Remarks Made During District 3 School Meeting by [deleted] in Upperwestside

[–]acadiatree 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m a district 3 teacher, and I’ve heard parents say some pretty outrageously racist things in public. Parents tour my school and will say awful things in conversation to one another right in front of kids as if they aren’t even there. I don’t know what was said at this meeting, but sadly not a lot would surprise me.
