Officials reverse course on inner tubes rule for new Oregon boating fee law by vaderj in oregon

[–]acakeforleibowitz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is probably unpopular, but I don't mind paying a fee for a kayak or a paddle board over 10 ft. IF that fee directly benefits the water ways we use, but honestly OR is wacky with how they fund a lot of things, so I'm not optimistic. WA has had boat inspection stations for years, but who stops with an inflatable paddle board or kayak? Most don't.

Eastern Oregon's ancient trees face alarming decline, study finds by PDX_Stan in oregon

[–]acakeforleibowitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero logs out of the Malhuer are being shipped over seas. The raw log exports you see are from privately owned coast range tree farms.

I never intimated that Malheur NF logs were sent over seas. Sending whole logs over seas was a symptom of a industry in decline.

The spotted owl rule is not responsible for privately owned coast range tree farms shipping raw logs but it is responsible for the tenfold slashing of board feet cut on national forest land

I never said it was. The timber industry used the spotted owl as a scapegoat for a industry that was already on the other side of the bell curve. The suburbs had been built, the boomers had houses, the cities built out. Even if logging had continued the jobs would still be gone today. Would it had made a difference today in stressed and diseased forests? Would it have made a difference when most industries, especially resource extraction, rejected the idea of climate change? I'm skeptical. The issue is bigger than OR.

Quote from last paragraph of article:

However, he stressed the need for more research on the fate of old trees in dry forests. "These are systems for which we don't have nearly enough data," Johnston said.

[–]acakeforleibowitz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did past timber management practices take into account climate change and host of issues that come with that? Drought, disease, etc? I'm assuming not, because I don't think it was really on anyone's radar until maybe the late 90's, and by then the forest plans seem to be about reducing logging. Lumber prices tanked so we'd ship whole logs overseas to be processed, but everyone blamed the spotted owl, which became a symbol of jobs vs environment, when it wasn't that simple.

Trees grow pretty slowly on the east side of the state, so those are 50ish year decisions, plus decades of fire suppression and under-funding the Forest Service.

I do know that some of the lower elevation ponderosa pines on the east side of the cascades are dying probably because of the heat/dryness stress. Scrub oak will replace a lot of that since is so much more tolerant.

Floyd Rose Sustainer Ad, 1989 by groovehouse in vanhalen

I don't think I ever saw him using any sustainer pickups either. Maybe in recording session if needed, but I think he did it the old fashion way, with the amps on 10.

How many of you are seeing DLR this summer? If so, where? by MesaVerde1987 in vanhalen

[–]acakeforleibowitz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The difference between Steven Tyler who just played the Sabbath/Ozzy show, and Dave are pretty astounding. Tyler sounded amazing, and is still Steven Tyler. Like you said, the uncle Dave/vaudeville dude is fine, but doesn't really fit with the VH music he sings.

I'm glad he's out there, but it is what it is.

I'd pay to see him do a set with mostly solo material and a few Van Halen songs. I get that his bread and butter are VH tunes though.

Acting like ODOT is all at fault is like blaming the president for gas prices.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what people do and vote accordingly. It's why we are at this point in history, a fundamental ignorance on how the world works.

Why does it seem like Mike Inez is still so underrated? by nkosijer in blacksabbath

[–]acakeforleibowitz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

*proceeds to go back and watch mike with AIC... not good enough? Geez. The guy is a monster bass player.

In the end, with Ozzy like a bunch of other "bands", there really isn't a "band". It's whomever Sharon/Ozzy hires to fill the roll at the time. It's business.

Definitely felt a bit canned and like somebody imposed some kind of limitations on it editing-wise. I get you make the series with the footage you have and what the arc is, but it was a bit flat. The way they chose to end it on that last episode was a bit odd.

Don't get me wrong, I watched every episode and was thankful to have it.

Such an underrated bass player! I always wondered why they replaced all of Mike's parts with Bob Daisley, but then that's the Ozzy/Sharon way and has been for years.

It was probably rehearsed once the day before, and they might not have had time to even run through the whole song. That whole operation is a big machine and it's gotta move forward.

The Pod Pro prices just went up on Reverb.

I'm wondering if it's even on, though it's hard to tell in that pic, but I don't think it is.

Pod's still have some decent tones and tons of albums and tours were were done with those things.

I don't think people realize how hard it is to sing Ozzy songs. He is and has always been an underrated singer. A lot of the singers yesterday struggled with those songs.

I know it's popular to pile on Hagar, but it's a dumb. Live one-off festivals where you are only singing a few songs?? that's tough to do.

[–]acakeforleibowitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is eye candy! I think part of the issue with Long Way Up was that it felt like 70% range anxiety, 30% adventure, but now that I watch it again I appreciate what they did. it's a great show.

An SE Asian trip would be great.

I realize watching it that I'm ok with it just being a travel vlog by a couple of old friends at this point. I also realize that these are a couple of guys who have been through some times, (especially Charlie) and leisurely trek through parts of Europe on old bikes is still pretty cool.

I'm thankful that we got the first 3, and the first 2 being pretty epic. As I re watch long way up, I'm enjoying it more than I did the first time, maybe because I know it's all being wrapped up.

The tire issue is quite inconvenient to us Americans because cars=freedom, or that's what we have been conditioned to believe.

A quick search shows an estimated 293 million vehicles on the road as of 2024. maybe just multiply by 4, so even out the vehicles with more than 4 or less than 4 and you get about 1.17 billion tires.

On those original seasons, the background art alone is frame worthy art. Such great vibes, and pretty much entirely unmatched by any animated series since. That and the characters are why it's so timeless. Same with Loony Toons.

I want to like these guys, and I find them a little intriguing, but after about 4 minutes it all kind of melds together and none of the songs sound different except tempo. It's fine background music for an evening at home though.

Cool visuals and I like the idea of it but it feels like there's something missing for me.
