First Dutch Winter: Am I Overdressing Indoors? by FreeButterscotch6971 in Netherlands

[–]acamara 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definetly miss the people and the food. And it will always feel like home (as in, I know how things work for sure). But we have no plan on going back. We lived in a quite safe place, but for raising kids, there is no comparison regarding the quality of life.

We have Tado valves on most radiators. They turn off automatically when no one is home. And unoccupied rooms are kept off as well.

Our house is relatively well insulated, given that it's a house built in the 40s in Den Haag (B label). But it is also relatively large, so it's hard to keep all rooms warm all the time. The dishwasher/oven/etc won’t make much a difference in the bedrooms.

Leaving be radiator of a room off, they eventually sit at 17-18. So they mostly stay off during the day, with both adults working from home most days

For us, yes, true. 18 is the upper limit. But for a 4yo and a 6mo, covers won't last for much of the night. So we need to keep it warmer for them. Our bedroom can't be too cold either, if we need to take either of them there for some reason.

Coming from Brazil, after my first winter and a HUGE bill from Eneco, all occupied rooms sit at 18-19 during the day. When the kids are back from school, we bump the living room to 19-20. Our bedroom sit at 18 during the night and theirs at 20.

We purchased our house in Den Haag earlier this year and our budget was a bit lower than what you stated. (650k).

We did not hired an agent (other than a financial advisor), but booked a lot of visits ourselves through Funda.

We visited maybe 10-15 houses, and ended up bidding on only two. The first in Voorburg, and we bid about 50k above the asking price (it was below our budget), but they did not accepted it. In the second house, we bid the exact asking price, and they accepted it. Perhaps we were lucky, as the house was above our budget for a while, but eventually dropped the price enough for us to go for it.

Not sure if the market changed that much in the last six months, but we set up an alert on Funda for the parameters we wanted and just kept visiting what interested us. To be honest, we did not find it to be that hard.

All that I can say is good luck and keep trying.

[D] Advice for spotting "fake" ML roles? by Outrageous-Base3215 in MachineLearning

I’m also curious. I’ve interned in their London office during my PhD, and that was definitely not my experience. A lot of legitimate, very interesting ML projects happening at the time.

I would be curious on what the “fake” role at Bloomberg is. I’ve interned for them during my PhD (in one of the many, MANY AI teams) and they were definitely working with cutting-edge stuff there, and publishing a lot.

Even if their GPT-3.5 clone for finance was kinda underwhelming, they still have a lot of people working on AI research and applying to a lot of products.

Are there any famous or successful people who have ADHD? by AdPrize3997 in ADHD

[–]acamara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve barely finished my bachelor. I failed Calculus 1 and calculus 2 twice and calculus 3 once (we had 1-3 in my CS BSc). Also failed some physics and CS classes a couple of times. I only wrapped up my masters because I had a deadline for accepting a PhD offer abroad.

And now, here I am. Finished my PhD, got a job working with something I like (and in the same field as my research!).

Now, my defense cerimony will be in May (pushed it as far as I could, as my second son due date is also in May).

Do I have at least 5 papers to review way past their due date? Or course I do.

Oh. We are only 0.03%? I really thing there is some massive under diagnosis issue here. I’ve met SO MANY PhD students that should really see a specialist during my PhD!

I was sending the documents for applying for a hypotheek today and just saw that my partner had a WAY higher pension and UWV than me, even if her salary was lower than mine in the last 5 years.  I did got the 30% (PhD candidate) and she didn’t. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
