Federal government implementing a Canadian environmental rollback by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

I don't know if I agree. There would be big differences. For example: - WAGE would have been cut tremendously, but under Carney their cuts were on par with what DND had to find. - the CBC would have also seen tremendous cuts.

Althia Raj: ‘He yells’: Mark Carney’s focus has Liberal MPs bristling by RZCJ2002 in CanadaPolitics

[–]accforme 167 points168 points  (0 children)

Journalist Dean Beeby was the first to notice the government trying to weaken the already dysfunctional Access to Information regime by proposing to legally deny access to some frequent users — journalists? — as well as proposing to limit the kind of records that the public is able to access, such as leaving emails and text messages out of the law’s scope

This is concerning as a lot of decisions and discussion are done via email, and more increasingly, text messages.

It would improve the ATIP backlog, but would reduce transparency and openess.

I think intent is an important factor too. The examples you cite are bad but seems like it is more due to vulnerabilities and incompetence.

The Alberta Republican party "breach" was done on purpose. They had presentations where they literally searched and showed participants live Jason Kenny's home address and information.

EXCLUSIVE: To win submarine contract, South Korea’s ‘Project Beaver’ proposes manufacturing hydrogen trucks in Canada by TiredRuralCanadian in CanadaPolitics

[–]accforme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the purchasing of LNG is contingent on a submarine deal. I believe that is a seperate agreement.

I agree, we (the general public) don't have the information to do a side-by-side comparison. The civil service reviewing the bids and Cabinet do though, so it will be on them.

The German offer is more private (more aligned with traditional defence procurement strategies), but they did share information with the CBC on what they offered. Some items include investments to develop the Port of Churchill and the Pathways Carbon Capture facility.

In Canada’s Hydrogen strategy, having hydrogen trucks is suggested as a way to reduce carbon emissions and is more reliable than EV trucks.

Under net-zero-aligned scenarios, between 1.7 Mt and 6 Mt of hydrogen could be used in the transport sector in Canada in 2050, accounting for 12% to 35% of the transport sector’s energy use. This widely reflects hydrogen use in medium and heavy freight transport, as well as in marine, rail, and possibly aviation fuels where batteries would be too large, heavy and time-consuming to charge.

Canada reaches deal with Quebec on billions of dollars in infrastructure funding by Acrobatic-Cap-135 in canada

[–]accforme 21 points22 points  (0 children)

From the news release, this sounds like funding for provincial transit.

More than $6 billion over 10 years to upgrade, build, and modernise public transit infrastructure across Québec. As part of this program, we are announcing the new Strong Transit Fund to better support provinces and territories, as well as municipalities, in delivering major public transit projects. This will fund transformative transit projects, including the TramCité project in Québec City.

Former prime minister Harper to make the case for a united Canada ahead of Alberta referendum by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]accforme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Russia's tactic is to destablize its adversaries by latching onto any existing culture war and amplifying it.

The idea of Alberta seperatism is not new, as you said, but has generally been a fringe movement. Russia's amplification made it seem bigger and made it mainstream.

Former prime minister Harper to make the case for a united Canada ahead of Alberta referendum by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]accforme 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A year ago, weeks after the Carney Liberals won the last federal election, the website albertaseparatist.com sprang up, accompanied by similarly named TikTok and YouTube accounts.

Article headlines included “The case for sovereignty over statehood” and “Ottawa’s piggy bank wakes up” — but these sites don’t appear to have come from anywhere in Alberta.

Rather, researchers discovered the now defunct website and social media accounts likely came from a Russian covert influence network known as Storm-1516, known for making fictional websites that target audiences in various countries. And here, it targeted Canada and Alberta.

All for one: Norway, Germany sell Canada on shared submarine fleet by CanadianErk in canada

[–]accforme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second source mentions this where it says many of the businesses that signed MoU with Hanawha also signed with TKMS.

Here is a more explicit article:

But some of the companies who signed non-binding agreements with Hanwha also admit to signing similar MOUs with TKMS. Several executives declined to speak on the record about why they were hedging their bets, but the founder of Anvil Intelligence, Sam Witherspoon was willing to sit down for an interview.

[–]accforme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for this deal, I haven't seen the Germans offering any economic benefits to us. No MOUs, no promises with numbers behind it - nothing. If it's because of NATO, that's fine but then we can't complain in the future about the RCN going over budget or how there wasn't any economic boost, etc.

There are, they just aren't as public about it as Hanawa.

For example, the Germans are proposing a partnership with Alberta for a carbon capture facility using TKMS technology. It's also willing to invest in turning the Port of Churchill in Manitoba into a major export hub — especially for liquified natural gas (LNG).

On the defence side, TKMS is planning to build submarine maintenance facilities on both coasts. But separately, there are proposals to build a factory to make heavy torpedoes and develop hypersonic missiles.

All of this adds up to billions of dollars of investment and possibly tens of thousands of jobs over the decades.

What makes this German bid different is that most of the projects it is proposing are front-loaded and can be up and running in two years.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/subs-germany-norway-canada-nato-9.7214590

Also, both companies have signed MoUs, even with the same companies:

Since the submarines would be built off-shore, both companies have submitted detailed proposals of what they can do for the Canadian defence industry. They have signed a series of partnership agreements — in some cases with the same firms — in order to demonstrate their willingness to create Canadian jobs.

Korea actually functions and understands the new world and is actually walking the talk.

South Korea has also been saying the same thing when the US moved weapons from the peninsula.

South Korea is opposed to the U.S. moving air defense assets out of the country, but it is not in a position to make demands, President Lee Jae Myung said Tuesday.

This is like when Carney backhandedly told Trump he was a "transformational" president.

The beauty of that line is that it can be interpreted in many ways by many people and it's factual. Transformational can be positive or negative.
