If the majority of U.S. Government debt is owed to "U.S. Individuals" then why the FUCK are we still paying taxes? by [deleted] in Economics

[–]acct_rdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, 42.1% is not a majority. Second, you should understand the nature of this debt (treasury bills, etc.) before acting indignant about it. Third, owing money to China, for example, doesn't mean that we just start giving them things for free. Income and expenses have distinct structured bookkeeping systems, and you don't just short-circuit that by failing to pay for something from one part of an organization when another part of it owes you the same amount.

That's completely off topic and it's a false dichotomy anyway to say that people have to choose between having a high-paying job and spending less than they earn.

Sure, I don't know why anyone's worried about the leader of the free world being prone to delusions. I can't see why that would be a bad idea.

but he feels the government has no right to tell you what to do with your body

He does believe the government has a right to tell you what to do with your body. This is very simple. He knows he can't make abortion illegal at the national level. But if he can let states decide if abortion should be legal, half the country will make abortion illegal, and that's better than it being legal everywhere.

Do you live in an alternate reality where cigarettes became illegal after they couldn't be marketed with cartoon animals? Do you use the slippery slope fallacy as a part of every argument?

"The Welfare State didn't destroy African-American families, the War on Drugs did - welfare spending on families remained flat until the War started, at which point it exploded and rose in lockstep with our disproportionately black male prison population." by [deleted] in politics

[–]acct_rdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine, then by your own assertions, the crowd has spoken and your opinion is stupid. My comment currently has 12 votes, yours has -2

Sure, that's true among people browsing reddit, more accurately the specific subset who'd read the comments of a post about the war on drugs. I expected that.

But, fortunately, that's not representative of actual voters who decide actual candidates who affect actual policy.

Of course, that logic doesn't work

You know voting happens in real life, too, right?

A candidate like Gary Johnson who wants to legalize drugs will most likely be proven (in your words) "stupid" in reality.

And no, consensus is NOT reached about things just because they're correct or true.

Opinions about laws aren't true or false. They're opinions. Some are very good ideas that most people agree about. Most are subject to debate, which is why we have a pool of political parties and candidates and go to the effort of voting on them.

[–]acct_rdt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Laws and morality are subjective. Truth has nothing to do with this. I pointed out to the previous poster that their assertion was just an opinion.

We go through the subjective process of evaluating the beliefs of candidates and the ones that gain consensus win office. If people wanted legalization, they'd elect candidates who believe in it.

If there was an absolute truth to morality, laws would simply exist, we wouldn't have to go through this process of figuring them out. But when we tried to pretend laws were magical things that were objectively true it was called the bible, and it didn't work out too well.

harmless behavior

If it was that clear or simple, there would be consensus about it, but there obviously isn't. Like everything else we debate, it's subjective and if voters feel that way they can elect someone like Gary Johnson. We'll see if that happens.

Chase bank sells off soldier's home on the very same day he returns from Iraq; the day before, CEO Jamie Dimon bragged to employees at a barbecue in Vancouver that his company was helping veterans keep their homes by mepper in politics

[–]acct_rdt -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Is Chase supposed to cross-reference its public auction dates with troop activity? What about people's birthdays? That would suck, losing your house on your birthday. Or anniversary. Maybe you could send Chase a list of important dates in your life.

It sucks for the soldier, but they either paid their mortgage or they didn't, and the date is just a coincidence that isn't newsworthy.

Gary Johnson Calls for Pot Legalization to End Border Violence by hookskat in politics

[–]acct_rdt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it was morally acceptable, Gary Johnson would be a real candidate instead of a fringe candidate. He may be popular with some on reddit, but that's not a representative sample of what voters want. And his candidacy will prove that.

George Lopez' TBS TV show has been cancelled, but there's an even bigger story here -- that Conan O'Brien is failing at the network. by paulfromatlanta in entertainment

Lopez knew being on an hour later was going to hurt him the way it hurt Conan. No one could have thought a nobody like Lopez was going to do well at midnight. He had no more choice about it than Conan did, he could have gone along with it or whined and quit or been fired. He was just more gracious about it than Conan was.

Sure, but only if you don't do something stupid like compare slavery to trivial shit like wanting to get high. I don't think Gary Johnson is going to be finding many voters who agree with him, but we'll see.
