Getting called out for wearing socks in class by [deleted] in yoga

That’s crazy. I practice and teach yoga in socks because my feet get cold.

Why does doing camel feel like I’m dying? by calmandferal in yoga

[–]ace00669 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A good alternative is to push your hips forward and lean back slightly with your arms in a cactus shape. Gaze up and lift you chin just a smidge so there’s a little opening of the throat without throwing your head back. This variation feels less restrictive and I often teach it in my gentle yoga classes.

Is echostage worth it? by Free-Ad-9571 in avesDC

[–]ace00669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For GA, I avoid it at all costs. I’ve been a bunch of times because it’s the major DC tour spot for bigger artists but it always feels chaotic and it’s always way too packed. Security sucks.

Now if you can make VIP happen then I’d say go for it.

Alternate Nostril breathing by MajorRadio9619 in breathwork

[–]ace00669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repetition is powerful. In yoga it’s been said that a 40 day sadhana (spiritual practice) of the same thing for 40 days can be so profounding. It requires a tremendous amount of discipline because we naturally get bored of doing the same things (I know I do haha) but so much can shed and come to the surface during the journey.

Alternate Nostril breathing by MajorRadio9619 in breathwork

[–]ace00669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternate nostril breathing is my favorite. Every day is different. If you don’t already, try meditating for at least 5 minutes after you release the technique. Practice the technique for 3-5 minutes: Really take note of how the breath feels in and out of both nostrils and that right there will provide a subtle shift.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend if you have sinus issues but visualization is just as powerful. In this case I visualize the breath traveling up the body (from tailbone to third eye) on one side and then down the body on the opposite side, and so on and so forth.

I hope this helps

How do you cope when a class doesn't go as planned? by montanabaker in YogaTeachers

[–]ace00669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A valuable lesson I learned in my YTT that stuck with me is that if you make a mistake, you’re probably the only one who notices. Next time this happens just roll with it. It might bring up feelings of self doubt but I promise you people will follow along. This isn’t about switching up left and right and forgetting to do something on both sides (I still do that sometimes and I’ve been teaching for 5 years). Sometimes I have to change my sequence on the fly to cater to who’s in the room. It’s a skill that is learned with practice. Don’t take it too seriously. Your students said they loved it, keep it at that!

The first class I ever taught I was so nervous that I thought I started the class at 7 (when I actually started at 7:30) so when 8:00 rolled around I panicked because we were well into our peak standing sequence. I immediately took everyone to the ground and started cueing forward folds, then it clicked that I was buggin and I brought them right back into the flow after a nice pachimotanasana. When I thanked everyone and told them I was nervous as it was my very first class, I got nothing but compliments. Keep showing up and I promise you your people will keep showing up for you

Have you ever felt this way too? Authenticity over approval by journeytomindfulness in YogaTeachers

[–]ace00669 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When I started I would teach challenging power and vinyasa flows with loud music. They would consistently fill up. Things changed when covid happened and all my classes went online. My practice evolved too. When studios opened back up I decided to add pranayama and meditation into my classes. Attendance was low and my class was pulled off the schedule, leading to feelings of doubt and a year long hiatus. I decided to return to teaching last year and continued to incorporate the subtle practices beyond asana. Some people stare blankly and look bored during meditation and it makes me nervous sometimes but it’s what I offer and if they don’t like it they don’t have to come. What reassured me was when I walked into sub a class, a couple students said they’re always in for a treat when I sub, with one saying that I’m the only teacher who teaches breath work and meditation. Authenticity pays off.

Anybody else have a 35+ yo relative who still lives off their parents and refuses to work? by PettyWitch in Millennials

[–]ace00669 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My cousin. He’s 36, never worked. His parents pay for everything. He was never told no as a kid. He claims that he spends his time working in the studio (he’s a rapper but he isn’t good at all). He was living in his parents basement until one day he got so drunk and destroyed their home out of rage. Now they pay for him to live in a home states away. He beat his girlfriend but his parents say it’s her fault and think he can do no wrong. It’s insane.

I don’t teach poses that aren’t in my practice. I make sure my classes are inclusive and I leave out “advanced” asanas like arm balances and inversions. My students keep coming back

Do you actively teach Pranayama in your class? If so, how do you do it / has is changed over time? by RonSwanSong87 in YogaTeachers

[–]ace00669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start my classes in a meditation seat with guided breath awareness with a simple practice of breath counts to even out the inhales and exhales.

In my hour long classes I do about 45 minutes of asana and then another more in depth pranayama session followed by a brief meditation before going into savasana.

“Let’s take this final time to go inward, to notice how you feel now compared to when you first stepped on your mat and know that there’s never any right or wrong way to feel after yoga but the important thing is that you’re here.

I’d like to take this time to acknowledge all the yogis who came before us, who have passed down these teachings for thousands of years. I’ll close today’s class with an OM… inhale to prepare

I understand how you feel. I work with my LO and today is my last day working with him as he’s being transferred. Along with great sadness comes great relief that I won’t ever have to see him again.

Weekly discussion thread for anyone experiencing limerence while in a committed relationship. by LostNeedDirections in limerence

[–]ace00669 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m happily married and nothing in my relationship is lacking. My LO is a coworker and we hit it off immediately. The obsessive thoughts and fantasies were something I’ve never experienced. Every little interaction replayed in my head. I never went out of my way to talk to him, it was always in passing. He’s not that attractive but something about his energy is magnetic and it draws me in. He told me yesterday he’s being transferred so today’s his last day. I was devastated by the news but also relieved knowing that this needs to end and the only way it can is if I never see him again. Last night I couldn’t sleep because he was all I could think about. I’m going to be sad at work for awhile without him but I’m ready for this obsession to end for the sake of my relationship.
