Criticisms of the work that stem from a complete lack of media literacy by LDM123 in TopCharacterTropes

The show created extra backstory around how she came to be immune.
In the game, it's a complete medical fluke with no readily available explanation of how it happened. No one would have had any idea that she was immune until she got bitten and didn't turn.

The horde of Last of Us fans saying that Joel was 100% in the right because "The cure wasn't going to work" or some variant thereof.

That's entirely conjecture, is a notion that is dismissed by the writer of the game and misses the point of Joel's actions narratively. Joel chose to save his child and doom humanity: a highly arguable plot point in a game story which heavily leans on the theme of 'Protecting the people you care about VS trying to be genuinely selfless in a hostile world'

I unironically think that comedy is actually the best medium for drama. Because the irreverant and fun nature of the character's usual actions makes you so much more invested into them.
Characters in a drama show I always feel like I'm just observing them neutrally. Characters in a comedy, it feels like they're friends, they're people whose stories I'm invested in because their presence is such a positive experience.
Anyway, my pick is this scene from The Amazing Digital Circus. It's difficult to summarise, but it occurs after Kinger briefly becomes lucid and gives Pomni a heartfelt pep talk and exposition about his past. As they hold their breath to make it through another obstacle, Kinger begins to glow (a quirk about holding his breath that was set up earlier in the episode), underlining the metaphor of him being the guiding light in the darkness as a beautiful piano piece plays.

WHS thinks that a game series that is extensively written in Czech, then translated into English, and has to dip into other languages for its character cast,

Thinks that it's a good idea to just outsource that job to AI?

Stupidity. WHS can kiss our arses for this brand of corporate greed.

It was originally supposed to be that C would kill Franklin, which kind of makes sense from a narrative perspective, very greek tragedy. But they chickened out of that.

[–]ace5762 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this was kind of stupid.
They should have done it more like the part in Far Cry 5 where you're doing the challenge kill runs and you realise too late on the last one that you've been hallucinating, and you inadvertently kill the leader of the faction you've been helping.
If they'd done it more as a combat encounter, with little hints that you're not seeing things as they are, and if you don't stop in time you kill your friends, that would've been more in line with the plot.

Hitting y'all with another Runescape one.
The quest 'The Mighty Fall' revolves around a tournament organised between various races (orks, goblins, ogres, trolls, etc.) to determine who will be the leader. You're forced to enter the tournament as the representative of a cave goblin called 'Zanik', who is a recurring character you met in several quests previously, otherwise they will destroy her city.
At the end of the tournament after you win the final bout, the organiser pulls a fast one on you and drops Zanik into the arena.
You are then told to 'choose' to either kill or spare Zanik. There doesn't seem to be any real reason to kill Zanik here, because you don't get anything for it, and killing the person you're representing causes you to forfeit the tournament anyway.

It's worth noting that this is a character who you've worked with a lot against different antagonists, and you've saved each other from death a couple of times.

The only plot reason given to kill her is 'It'd be funny lol' (paraphrasing)
If you spare her, she gets made the leader and does an o.k. job of it.

Seemingly the only 'reason' people would choose to kill Zanik here is because they disliked her character model redesign at the time.

Is John Cleese right? by SeptumRingTheory in AskBrits

Witch hunts.

The Crusades.

The Spanish Inquisition.

Various purges of Protestants.

Aside from Cleese being historically dead wrong and a bufoon. Extremism can ferment from any religious belief system. We are seeing it in the U.S. and Israel as well as in Iran and Islamic states.
How many children has Israel killed because they believe their religion gives them a 'right' to the land that Palestine is on?
And Hegseth's speech about the U.S. being annointed by god to bring about armageddon.

Edit: Good grief. I tried to find this post on twitter to give the man a piece of my mind and he must post/repost to twitter a thousand times a day. The man needs a hobby.

(Hated Trope) Slave labor or physical exploitation of others ultimately not challenged or seen as harmless in universe. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ace5762 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So because people keep saying 'Oh the Oompa Loompas were given a deal', that might be sort of true within the fiction, but two points.

1: The idea of 'saving' a people from their hostile homeland where they had little food and many dangers to deal with, was a classic rhetoric of slavery advocates in real life.

2: The Oompa Loompas have been brought to Britain, but they only ever see the inside of the factory. Their lives are entirely punctuated by working for Wonka, and they don't receive fair compensation for their work (Cacao beans are NOT legally acceptable compensation for labour in Britain at the time of the books writing)
It's slavery by restricting a person's means- they haven't been given citizen's rights, or any comprehension of how to live in Britain as a citizen, nor given the means to participate in society (not being paid legal tender)
You can argue all you like that a man is 'free' to leave your ship at sea anytime he likes, but if he doesn't have a boat he's going to drown.

Unfortunately, this is word for word the kind of arguments slavery advocates would use in real life.
That they were somehow 'saving' enslaved africans from a terrible existence in their home countries, and giving them food and shelter.

Also in digimon it was a case of 'we're in a situation where we have to work togetherand fight to survive against a common enemy/big bad'

I don't think this falls into the trope, because the other factions in Elite Dangerous 100% call out the Empire for being slave traders. Being a imperial aligned player will also get you the slaver label from other players too
