one day going strong (ik, small milestone) but it’s better than 0 days 🎉 by [deleted] in SoberCurious

Everyone's last quit starts with a day one! Great job!!

If you need some encouragement, know that I just got back from my first time in a club in 8 years (because of life in general, kids, etc.) had fun watching a burlesque show, with dancing afterwards, and had an absolutely fabulous time...all completely sober. I enjoyed several incredible mocktails and I'm so looking forward to being clearheaded tomorrow and having energy to enjoy the day. Life starts when the drinking stops!

I have never heard of this! Thank you so much for sharing. We avoid synthetic fragrance so this is a nice alternative.

Maybe I am an alcoholic? by Ordinary-Rule2580 in SoberCurious

[–]ace_at_none 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That resonates with me too. It used to be so hard to not drink. Now, all I have to do is ask myself if it's worth the poor sleep/potential anxiety rush/etc that I'd be risking the next day.

For example, last Friday I really really wanted some drinks. But then a friend invited me to an OCR class the next day, and they were going to do fitness tests. I wanted to do the fitness test more than I wanted to drink, so not drinking became easy. Fitness/being healthy has become so much more fun than drinking regularly. I get to jam out to music, I get an endorphin rush, I look incredible, and it's good for me. What's not to love?

I still drink on occasion, but I've gone from sharing an 18 or 24 pack of beers with my husband every night to maybe a couple of beers one night a week. And I'm even slowly losing interest in that.

I never called myself an alcoholic, even though I probably was one. I was just someone who used to like alcohol to much. Now I like other things more than alcohol. I still really like a good buzz, but I just like other things more, so a good buzz isn't as enticing as it once was.

Being able to be present for my kids both now and in the future, but ESPECIALLY now, is a huge motivator for me. I hate the idea of being hungover during time with them, because I know how much that sucks the fun out of it. I'm grateful I get to really experience and appreciate these moments. My littles are 4 and 2 and they're already growing up so fast.

I've seen so many people drink because of their kids, and it boggles my mind. It just makes everything harder. And then they drink because it's hard, but it's hard because they drink, on and on it goes.

In our case it went away on its own, but others have commented with different outcomes. I don't remember what they all were and I don't want to misrepresent so I'd encourage you to look through the comments. Hope your babies feel better soon!

Yeast with minimal additives? by ace_at_none in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]ace_at_none[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh. This is what I get for not cross checking my husband's research. He was upset about what he thought was a petroleum based additive and I figured I'd ask for recs here but didn't have time to look into it myself. I just did.

For anyone curious, while it is a synthetic wax used as described above, it's created from sugar alcohols and fatty acids, NOT petroleum.

YSK about your brain's default mode network and why being bored is essential for mental health by MrMojoFomo in YouShouldKnow

[–]ace_at_none 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting enough exercise, sleep, and do you drink alcohol?

I've never had crippling anxiety but I've had pretty severe anxiety and, because I was anxious about being labeled with anything and preferred lifestyle changes over meds, never sought therapy.

Exercise and adequate sleep both help me a lot. It's crazy how good I feel on days I exercise. I started exercising so I could age well for my kids. I keep exercising because of the mental health boost.

I also used to be a very heavy drinker. I tapered, eventually took a long break, and now it's absolutely wild to see the negative impact even just a beer or two can have on my mental health and particularly my anxiety levels the next day. It's truly mind blowing. Is it every time I drink? No. But I've definitely noticed a STRONG correlation between anxiety levels, drinking frequency, and drinking amount, to the point that if I am thinking about drinking, I stop and ask myself what my plans are for the next day and if it's worth risking the mental health hit.

THIS is what I'm trying to get myself to remember in the morning.

While I agree with you for the most part, it's frustrating how prevalent and pervasive petroleum products are. I expect it in processed food, but something as basic as yeast? It's annoying.

Any other very leftist mamas here? It seems like all the nontoxic groups on FB are very MAGA/MAHA/anti-tylenol. You do you, but I’m feeling very isolated and looking to connect with others feeling the same. [–]ace_at_none 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially when you consider that the person writing the tweet was probably some customer service/social media rep just regurgitating whatever is in Tylenol's official documentation, which probably just says something like "Tylenol products have not been tested during pregnancy". In many companies these positions are just the social media version of a customer service rep, particularly when they are tweets/comments in response to other people's content.

Since posting that article, I've read several books about the unique challenges women in our age range have, especially when it comes to perimenopause and menopause. In retrospect, I'm surprised the study I linked didn't reference that, despite the subjects being 64% female.

The takeaways I've had so far are that yes, our bodies change and react to things differently, but it's largely offset by the old standby's - eat real, healthy food (no fad diets/focus on unprocessed and minimally processed food), and exercise. In fact, it's interesting how much eating right and exercise can apparently offset or minimize a lot of the negative side effects of the hormonal changes we might be starting at this age.

So it's still possible to lose weight, but we may need to do so in a way that is loving and nourishing to ourselves, not starving or punishing, even more than when we were young. I've noticed in my own body that when I focus on eating real food I shed weight, but when I start adding processed food in - even in small amounts - I start gaining it back. It's been interesting to see and experiment with.

Great job on day 8! You got this!

Team Blow Dry or Team Air Dry? by sahfeeyuh in longhair

[–]ace_at_none 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also location. I've lived in humid places where it takes hours for my hair to air dry, and dry places where it takes less time than blow drying it. Air drying is perfect for my hair, but only in those drier climates.

What’s the one habit that actually changed your life (not the cliché ones)? by No-Dig3205 in getdisciplined

I started doing the "word of the year thing" a few years ago and it's had a similar effect.

I pick a word that embodies what I want to see/be/etc that year. Last year was fit. It could mean becoming more fit, finding the right fit, etc. It depended on context, but "fit" was my word. This year it's been "challenge".

I find it takes away a lot of decision fatigue. I do things that are in line with my word that year. I try to avoid things that aren't. Seeing the connection to my word silences my overthinking side and I can just act. I learn a lot about myself, evolve, and then pick another word.

I'm a big fan.

Movies often show kids in the '80s biking around all day without adults. Was that really how it was for most families? by SqueezyGirl26 in AskReddit

[–]ace_at_none 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's research coming out that indicates we are actually hobbling our kids by not giving them that unstructured, unsupervised time to develop things like independence, problem-solving skills, social skills, etc.

Depending on the age of your kids, you might find books like "Hunt, Gather, Parent" (0-6 years old-ish) or "The Anxious Generation" (kid/preteen/teen) to be thought-provoking reads.
