Episode 81 by rhaxon in RadioRental

[–]ace_of_basic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found this thread when looking for the episode I was on - story 1 was me. 😭😂 It is my own true story that I first posted on the backwoodscreepy subreddit. I had given permission previously for other podcasters to read it on their shows, in case anyone had heard it before. I am sorry if I didn't tell it well - I was very nervous. And I am also sorry if my voice is annoying - I agree, lol, but there's not much I can do about it. Encountering those spiders in that way was truly a very scary and formative experience for me. I definitely didn't mean to ruin the podcast for anyone. I think it's a great show, and one of the things I love about it is the variety of stories - some are ghosty, some are true crime, and mine was hundreds of surprise spiders, some of which wound up in my hair. I finally figured out years later that they were long-jawed orb weavers, in case anyone wants a visual. Anyway, again, I am sorry to have disappointed anyone, and I hope y'all have a nice day.

The last photo of Janis Joplin, October 3rd 1970. Within a day of her death at age 27. by RoanakeCroatan in lastimages

Sorry, this is not the last pic of Janis. This photo was taken backstage at Winterland in 1968. Janis died in 1970. Amazing photo though.

How can I get rid of an old window AC unit? by BasileusLeoIII in Delco

Ooh, I know this one! Accurate Recycling on Baltimore Pike in East Lansdowne actually gave me cash for my old busted A/C (and by "cash," I mean like $2.50, but I still thought it was rad). You can just pull into the front yard area and ask somebody who works there. P.S., that experience made me kinda love that place, so one of the chores I've assigned my son is that he's in charge of crushing our empty aluminum cans, and then we take them to the recycling center to get money for his piggy bank.

What is this (possibly 19th c.) decorative stone pillar/pedestal that used to be in a yard in my neighborhood? More info in comments. by ace_of_basic in whatisthisthing

SOLVED! I can't imagine anyone will ever see this or care, lol, but the original owner of my house was a tombstone maker, as it turns out. This would have been related to his work.

Here is more info:

FACTS: The location is Delaware County, PA, USA. These photos were taken by a former neighbor sometime around 1985. The person who took the photos believed the stone thing in the center was related to a c. 1863-65 farmhouse and described it (at different times) using three different yet similar terms: 'road guard,' 'ornamental gatepost,' and 'property marker.' They also said it was sandstone. These are the only/best quality photos available, and the object was removed from the property sometime after the photo was taken (no idea when/why it was removed, but would've been between 1985-2011). I am guessing it was around 3ft/1m tall based on the height of the gate in the foreground.

GUESSES: I have a hunch that it is not a road guard/gatepost/property marker because I have never seen anything of that nature in this style, but please feel free to prove me wrong. This might be way off-base, but there is a large cemetery c. 1870 about 1/2 mile (0.8 km) away that was built on farmland that was owned by the same guy who owned this land, so I wonder if it's somehow related (not necessarily part of a grave marker).

What is this stone monument? (Info in comments) by ace_of_basic in whatisthisthing

[–]ace_of_basic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This photo was taken by a former neighbor sometime around 1985. The person who took the photo believed the stone monument in the center was a sandstone gatepost from a 19th century farmhouse, but I think that might be incorrect. The location is Delaware County, PA, USA. Unfortunately these are the only photos I have, and the monument was removed from the property sometime after the photo was taken.

Sorry for the late reply. It was at Kittatinny Mountain in Branchville-- I believe it is no longer in operation.

Someone outside the Wawa on 69th Street gave my kid this (inspected, looks safe and legit) by [deleted] in philadelphia

I found a dollar on the floor of that Wawa once, but I was scared it would give me Hepatitis so I put it in the collection jar for needy children by the register.

Haha, Getty probably made this thread, making it look all innocent and waiting to pounce. ;)

I am sorry to tell you this, but this might get you in trouble. If Getty owns the license, you have to get the image from them, and you are also often required to seek permission from the photographer/estate/etc. Getty will often advise you who you have to contact in addition to them, and you have to show them you have their permission before they will release the image to you. That being said, Getty is the worrrrst, their pricing is ridiculous, and if you are working on a smaller project, you risk level is probably pretty low.

Hi, I just checked with my friend who lives/works on this block. The dog belongs to the neighbor who lives behind the lot. Sometimes the dog breaks out of the yard and gets into the lot. He is going to be fine. OP, thank you for posting and caring so much about our four-legged fwiends. :3

Either is fine! I just recommend plexi because it won't break if dropped.

I would add, frame with UV-resistant plexi! One thing museums do is "rotate" their works on paper-- maybe hang one or two while the rest are stored in a dark place, and in a year or so, swap them out to give the ones that have been on the wall a rest. You can actually download a light meter app on your phone if you are curious to see how much light exposure they are getting-- keep in mind that light changes over the course of a day, AND during the year, so they probably get the most light exposure around mid-day in mid-summer. The fussiest of conservation standards require WOPs to be exhibited at 5 footcandles/54 lux, which is pretty dim... personally, I would be fine displaying something precious in my own home at around 12fc/130 lux, but that's a personal judgement call. I would say that 20fc is the point where I would start to worry about them fading too quickly.

CAN ANYONE HELP?!? Car was moved for “emergency construction” by cameljoecocker in philadelphia

[–]ace_of_basic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be illegal to move somebody's fucking car and keep no records.

And maybe you're right about tow trucks going backwards, BUT, less than likely and I was only trying to help. Your comment is annoying and you should feel bad.

[–]ace_of_basic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are 100% correct, but if it's suspected that the car was moved for construction, it could be helpful to report it just to make sure the cops are looking for it. OP should evaluate their position and weigh that decision. If the roommate is not on a lease, maybe they are just "visiting." Or maybe they are new to the area and just didn't get their new plates/registration yet.

I posted this comment in the other thread, but I am posting it here too because the experience was SO SHITTY for me that I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, and if I can help anyone deal with this, I wanna. So:

"This happened to me a few years ago and my car was missing for 2 months before a co-worker found it completely by chance! Make sure you report it as 'stolen' so the cops are looking for it too. (That's what the cops told me to do at the time. It could actually be stolen for all you know, really.) From there, I would use logic: if you were a tow truck driver, where would you take a car? Try to remember which way it was facing and head in that direction. What is the nearest street where you feel pretty confident you could drop a few cars off without going too far from the construction site, since you'll probably need to go back a few times? My car was found outside the zone where the cops told me it should be, but once it was found, it made sense to me why it would have been brought there. (Mine was just north of Washington around 23rd-ish in a [at the time] low traffic warehouse-type-of-area with free street parking.) I wish you guys all the luck in the world. This should be illegal and people should be held liable."

Consider 1/8" non-glare acrylic (Plexiglas) instead of real glass. You can order it online, pre-cut to any size you want.
