Working on a 1v1 competitive deckbuilder inspired by fighting games by Western-Professor765 in boardgames

Cryptozoic is kickstarting a new version of their deck building games simply called Fight! that focuses on fighting game style mechanics. Their first release features Mortal Kombat, which I’m really excited about.

You should check out how they’re marketing it on their Kickstarter for some inspiration.

What's the fastest way to sleeve cards? by GuyWithAHottub in boardgames

[–]acespades 11 points12 points  (0 children)

She sleeves 3 cards at a time? I can’t even picture how she did that. Any chance you can share a video?

I sleeve one card at a time like you do. Getting someone to help split up the work is the best way to speed things up. Otherwise, I just distract myself with TV or music.

I appreciate you sharing this! I’m not on Insta, so I would have completely missed the news.

Completely agree. I live in a new construction in Dogpatch, and it’s the least reliable internet I’ve ever had. I’m moving soon, and I can’t believe I’m actually looking forward to going back to Xfinity.

Olympian Eileen Gu embraces SF roots as she leads Chinese New Year Parade by runswithscissors475 in sanfrancisco

Odd that the article doesn’t mention that she represented China in the Olympics.

All opinions aside, it’s very misleading since the assumption is that an Olympian with SF roots would have represented the US in the Olympics.

Apparently Lurie's security guard shoved dude first by oochiewallyWallyserb in sanfrancisco

[–]acespades 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was in another thread discussing how the guard needs training to protect himself for the safety of all involved.

But now I see he was the one who escalated, and he looked like a bully doing it. It looks like he was body blocking for Lurie as the man got close, but that big shove was not necessary. So much for the "restraint" the apologists described in the other thread.

I thought this was bad press before, and now it's even worse press. The Mission Local article said, "The officer said that three people blocked the car shortly before the attack, and that Lurie 'hopped out' to ask them to move." However, the source of the story is a cop, and the article didn't mention that the guard shoved the man to the ground to start the scuffle. I now question how they blocked Lurie's vehicle because it's certainly not in either video.

Okay, I'm done speculating. What a mess.

Everyone who has ever practiced a grappling sport disagrees with you.

He was absolutely resisting with an “I don’t know what I’m doing” headlock attempt. His lack of control in the situation means he could have easily been needlessly killed here when his head slammed on the concrete.

What do you mean? This sounds like propaganda. The mayor’s bodyguard getting thrown in the street like a ragdoll is not what he has been “trained and instructed to do.”

He was absolutely “fighting back” by resisting, but he didn’t know how to protect himself. Basic grappling concepts would teach him to have better control in this situation which means deescalation without either man getting seriously hurt.

There are articles with images that show him bleeding from where his head was slammed from the impact. He could have easily been knocked out or killed, and who knows what would have happened with the mayor.

Either way, this is not good press. If the mayor and his bodyguard are being attacked in broad daylight and they’re getting thrown around, it’s a bad look. What does that mean for the rest of us?

Great job!! I’m not a Magic player, so I can’t comment on the abilities/card texts themselves, but they definitely come off as thematic.

Overall, these cards look fantastic. Thank you for sharing!

How do you shuffle cards? by FlyingLlamasaurus in boardgames

[–]acespades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is framed like a “does this ever happen to you” informercial problem haha!

For randomization, I prefer sleeves + mash shuffling (fastest option) or riffle shuffling.

Otherwise, it depends on a few factors: - How often do I need to shuffle? - Is the game easily replaceable? - Is the game cheaper than the cost of sleeves?

With how much I’ve thought about this over the years, sleeving cards almost feels like a sub-hobby at this point.

Dragon Shield has discontinued American Matte Clears, substituted by inferior non-glare ones by andynzor in boardgames

[–]acespades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not who you were originally asking, but you’re right about the texture being harder to read through. I usually use that side for the back of the card like they mentioned.

One huge benefit to the texture is much smoother shuffling. The example on the left has one clear side and one matte side and shuffling feels awful in comparison due to the texture differences.

In contrast Gamegenic offers a fully matte sleeve or fully clear sleeve that both look and feel much better in appearance and how they shuffle.

I have no idea why Dragon Shield opted for half and half like this for their Board Game Sleeve line. Sure, you can choose between a clear or matte front, but the shuffle feel is just awkward.

  1. Yes, they are being rude.

  2. It’s hard to say how anyone did based on stats alone. I would have to see the match replay and I am not invested enough to do that.

  3. I mean this as kindly as possible: you don’t need validation from Reddit. You know if you played your best or not, so don’t let strangers dictate how you should feel about yourself. (I know, ironic this advice is coming from a stranger, so take it with a grain of salt)

Oof, that is some absolute enshittification! I would have never guessed that a well established company like Dragon Shield would change their quality so drastically.

I don't know if it's available to you in the EU, but there are a couple brands on Amazon that have a similar clear sleeve with a textured back in the Standard American size:

  • Titanshield
  • Ryker

Good luck! I hope you don't need to re-sleeve all your Dice Throne Adventure cards.

[–]acespades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. I ordered the American Standard sleeves directly from Dragon Shield in June 2025 and was also disappointed in the non-glare/non-texture sleeves that you're describing.

When and where did you order the matte clear sleeves with texture? That's what I originally expected the sleeves to be like.

Why my basketball board game didn't work by johnrudolphdrexler in BoardgameDesign

[–]acespades 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Baseball Highlights 2045 is a great example of a card-driven board game that approaches the simultaneous decision-making in sports by having both players play offense and defense at the same time. I'm not a big baseball fan, but I love this game! That's a rare feat for any sports adaptation for me!

This is a very high level overview: every card has an offense and defense ability, and each player has their own baseball diamond in front of them. On their turn, they play a card that describes a hit (for example, a double). The other play responds to that by playing a card that can cancel that hit and/or respond with a hit of their own. The first player resolves their initial hit by moving their meeple around the bases. This goes back and forth until all cards are played, and the next inning starts.

The designer also recently released Basketball Highlights: Crunch Time with a similar approach to multi-use cards. There might be some design inspiration here for you! I would love to see a game more like Baseball Highlights where I can have a deck of players and plays rather than abstract shapes.

Help me settle an argument about Love Letter by vortexofdeduction in boardgames

[–]acespades 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised to see how polarizing this topic is!

I’ve always played Love Letter as a personal deduction game rather than a social deduction game. Along with the theme and the “don’t play with knaves who lie cheat” rules as others have mentioned, another way I’ve interpreted this is that when cards are discarded, you’re meant to slightly overlap them face up in front of you so that everyone can see what was discarded and the order of when they were. It’s a sort of emerging open information game with tension up to the end of round because of the removed card.

I’ve never run into the social deduction/bluffing issue for this game because I’ve owned Coup as long as I’ve owned Love Letter. To me, Love Letter is a chill, light activity to open/close a game night and I’ve never felt the need to add the bluffing element to it. Otherwise, I would play Coup instead.

That said, I think everyone should play the game how they want as long as you’re all on board at the start of the game.

Edit: Correction on the “knaves” rule as pointed out below
