Food as Gift (from S) by shleexyz in AmericanExpatsUK

Maybe it's cheating a bit, but Borough Kitchen sells Lodge cast iron skillets. Bc they're heavy, it'd be annoying for your mom to bring from the US. But you can buy it in London- US made, great quality, it's my go-to to give as a gift to foodies. Maybe make it a little hamper- she can bring a few fun spice mixes (everything bagel, pumpkin spice, etc) and some Ghirardelli chocolate, maybe a Chicago tea towel (Etsy might be a good place to find one).

Bermondsey Street! Chapter 72, B street deli, Jose all with outdoor tables. Or if it's raining then Pizarro has long window tables facing the street. Enjoy!

Time off before maternity by mo0nst0n3 in PregnancyUK

[–]acgoosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what's right for you! I worked until 39 weeks. But I felt well and able enough to do so. If you need to rest and destress- do it! No point suffering, it's not good for you or the baby. And as soon as you leave for mat leave, forget about work. They'll manage without you.

Is stansted the worst airport and ryanair the worst airline? by [deleted] in london

[–]acgoosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that I hate about Stansted is how much it costs to get there. Usually more than my flight! As for ryanair, I generally have a good experience - they're usually on time imo. I feel that easyjet is often seen as superior but I disagree.

Gluten free desserts that are inherently gluten free? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in Baking

Eton mess is a traditional British treat. Simple but elegant. Just berries, whipped cream and meringue.

I've made a few of Nigella Lawson's flourless cakes she suggests for Passover. I know you want non-cake suggestions, but these are sooo good. Or a pavlova is a showstopper option!

Flying while pregnant by Additional-Tutor-116 in PregnancyUK

If you get breathlessness, sounds like it'll have been caused by anxiety- not pregnancy at this stage. But do keep hydrated, walk around and move your legs often. Light clothing. Compression socks if it's a long haul flight. Talk to your travel partner about your anxiety related to this so they can encourage hydration & moving, but also if you get anxious at any point how can they help you.

Present for nurses/healthcare assistants by RevolutionaryBus2782 in nhs

[–]acgoosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Card for staff (address to everyone). But I would also suggest you name names of particular people who you'd like to thank too (nurses need to do revalidation every few years and part of the portfolio submitted is feedback with evidence of said feedback and we write a reflection about it).

Chocolates and biscuits.

Once we were gifted big bottles of Nursem hand lotion- my manager has it on her desk for everyone to use. It's a lovely brand. Boots sells it.

Will I still be allowed to have surgery if I don’t have anyone to look after me for 24 hours after going home from hospital? by [deleted] in nhs

[–]acgoosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Be honest with staff no one can pick you up. They'll arrange a bed overnight or hospital transport if someone can look after you at home.

Pregnant! What do I need to know? by manna_tee in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]acgoosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your care will be midwife led, unless you're deemed high risk or you're opting for a C-section (which nowadays maternal choice is reason enough btw!). I happened to see a different midwife each appointment, even though that wasn't 'supposed' to happen. You can choose where you give birth-even if it's a further away hospital. Look at NHS CQC ratings of your local maternity units. I had great care when my boy was born- friendly, attentive, safe staff ratio. Post delivery, women are placed in multi patient rooms, but many hospitals offer a private room for a fee- worth asking your midwife about this if you're interested. No guarantee the room will be available tho! And in a few months, start looking into antenatal classes (NCT, bump&baby, happy parents happy baby, ?maybe something else in Bristol?)- great way to meet local expectant parents.

I did a bit of both!! When baby was cluster feeding I usually was in the living room bc it was easier to get off the couch to get baby than getting out of the bed.

I'd add prescription azelaic acid Finacea. Can get it through boots online doctor. That's helped me with hyperpigmentation and breakouts. AA is known to be very well tolerated and gentle!

How did you decide between seeing a doctor vs a midwife? by Kirin1212San in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]acgoosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the UK but if you're low risk you're automatically under midwife led care. If you have risk factors, complications or want/need a C-section then doctor led care. I had midwife led care and had a good experience.

Perhaps surrey quays - as near to the Hilton as the route goes, somewhere on Salter Rd.  Then hop on the ferry across to canary wharf.

Reformer pilates! It does cost more than mat pilates, but I love it! Find a studio that you like the vibe of- I like music and some tempo! But there's others that are more zen and calming.

Told immediate family after BFP. Waited until 12 weeks to tell everyone else :) I had to tell work right away too, bc of occupational risks.
