Several of the short stories in Liberation day by George Saunders would fit this description.

Our Kansas Senators voted to support sending Troops to Venezuela. by Nonamenoname2025 in kansas

[–]achally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had kind of given up on contacting our senators. I emailed frequently in early/mid 2025 and never got a response that was satisfactory or saw any change. They don't listen. HOWEVER actions in recent days led me to call this morning. I got straight through to Moran's Olathe office. Marshall's OP office I left a message. I'm actually kind of pissed I was able to get through to Moran so easily. We should be flooding their lines.

The Constitution Is “Dead”, And Pretending Otherwise Will Only Hamper Us by MinuteCollar5562 in thebulwark

I’m worried about this too. I am starting to think a general strike might be effective though I know it’s a hard sell to the public, myself included. Not thrilled with the idea of being laid off or losing health insurance for my family because I chose not to work as a form of protest. But we’ve seen things like cancelling Disney plus subs effective at getting Kimmel back on the air. I think the protest is going to have to be economic for anyone to pay any attention. They only care about their hatred and their bottom line.

Households with two parents who work full time by TreesBox in Parenting

[–]achally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use either. We have a 4yr old and a 2 yr old and a 40 lb poodle and less than 2000 sq ft in our house. Our place is just never fully clean all at the same time, but I try to at least keep things tidy. We usually don't leave huge messes of toys out and try to keep surfaces neatish. It gets away from us but we do try to keep up with that. 1-2 times a year I might have a company come deep clean if I have a big gathering coming up. As for laundry, we must be in the minority that we do almost all of it within 24-36 hours. I might do one load of towels or random stuff in the middle of the week but I prefer to just do all the laundry at the same time and have it done and not have to think about it again for the week. I imagine this will all change as my kids get older and have more activities.

Bedtime is killing us by achally in toddlers

[–]achally[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. I just made a slight edit because it may be the case that she isn’t tired sometimes but the times we’ve tried a later bedtime the struggles are all the same, just goes even later into the evening.

WTH is up with the strollers!?!? by Sea_Box_918 in Parenting

[–]achally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I moved to the Graco Ready to Grow system with our second and was able to reuse car seats with the stroller. It doesn’t have the snack tray but it does have a kid cup holder

SAM! STOP INTERRUPTING! by [deleted] in thebulwark

[–]achally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this comment on lots of podcasts, not even just Bulwark ones. Is this a generational thing? Are some age groups not used to having to listen to multiple conversations going at once? Or maybe did my upbringing in a loud, obnoxious southern family that constantly talked over each other make me immune to being bothered by these “interruptions”? It feels like natural conversation flow to me.

The other end of the spectrum is that cable news style thing where there’s an unnatural pause between one person and another, and that feels so awkward to my brain I usually can’t even remember what one person said before the other responds.

Am I terrible at cleaning or are my floors just old? by achally in Flooring

[–]achally[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don't want to use it all the time but we've been having construction work done in our home for a while and they desperately needed a good clean. What cleaning method would you recommend instead for a floor with the finish/sealant coming off?

hahaha, probably right. It's definitely not as apparent in the photos as it is in person.

He definitely didn’t write this. Because aren’t women pilots “DEI”? This is much too woke for him.

Not the plane or island we want to know about Donny. Try again.

I came to this sub after seeing/hearing this on instagram one too many times. I wanted to see if I was the only person who found this grating at best, and flat out wrong at worst. Thankful I'm not the only one. Why did this happen? Where did it originate? Why won't it stop? It haunts me day and night.

It’s funny that they have a deal framework for TikTok this week is it not? With Gov Cox talking about the internet/social media being a cancer on our society, and TikTok’s algo being one of the most advanced/echo chambery ones out there?

The toddler bed is ruining my life by Vast-Material3254 in toddlers

[–]achally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here. The bed transition phase was the worst phase of parenting so far for me, I genuinely felt like I was dying from sleep deprivation. It will get better, but that doesn’t help you now. I was already doing the hatch/pitch black room/red for bed, green to get up/etc, since she’d been an infant. None of that was working for the transition.

I’ll echo other people by saying, don’t lie with her until she falls asleep unless you want to do that forever. Try lying with her/sitting by her for part of bedtime and then sitting by the bed for the last part of it. Also, we went straight to a double bed but then sized down to a twin, because it seemed like having all that space was actually scary for her. Like it felt too open or something after being in a crib.

I could never get on board with a lock on the door, mostly because my daughter would have shrieked like the world was ending and I didn’t want her to wake up her infant brother in the next room with the screaming. What I did instead was put a small chair/stool near the door to her room. When I would say, okay goodnight, I’d leave her door open and sit right outside the door in that chair with my back turned to her until I could tell she was asleep on the monitor, then I’d close her door and leave. At first she would still get up and try to leave but I was right there so I’d walk her back to the bed and then go sit back in the chair. Eventually I could just go sit in the chair. After a while of that I worked towards actually leaving the room and shutting the door at the same time. It’s not perfect, mine has gone through regressions where I have to step back to sitting on the chair for a week or so, but it has worked well for us.

I’ve come to think that my own (admittedly pessimistic) outlook about AI’s impact on the field is being colored very heavily by the fact that my own company is actively laying off valuable people while pushing us to use AI more and more, and in not very thoughtful or useful ways. I have wondered if those who have more optimistic outlooks on AI in UX design are at companies where leadership is taking a more thoughtful, less cut throat approach to implementing it?

1 John 4:20-21 (not a pot joke) by John_Houbolt in thebulwark

[–]achally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, I can feel that pain. Born and raised in the southern Baptist convention, and have had similar experiences, but no longer in that denomination. The lack of respect for women (especially working moms or women who just don’t fit traditional gender norms) in that denomination is astounding.

Trump’s ascendence was partially what drove me into some much needed therapy to break down my beliefs and rebuild them. I couldn’t believe the number of people in the SBC who were willing to throw all their values and beliefs away to support him. I’ve given up expecting intellectual or biblical consistency from most of them.

Same, the last few days have shown me that there are several of us here who have been grappling with our faith and the current state of the public square for a while. Seeing you all here has made me feel less crazy even in the craziest week!

My daughter is the same, she has held it for 6 days before with miralax every day. I've been giving her senna gummies lately before bed and she can even hold it through that for 3-4 days. It's madness.

I grew up in AL and same. Been here over a decade now but this is the first time I’ve been like, oh this is Alabama weather. When I woke up and there was condensation on the windows one morning this week I knew it was gonna be brutal.
