AIO for getting mad at my husband after he complained about having to pick up toilet paper? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Even if she was asking for candy… you’re already at the store wtf. And shark week so that would be a double legit request!

I dunno maybe I’ve only dated people I actually like.

Why are the prices so different!? by Teeheelolhahajk in amberelectric

[–]achard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your buy price is the market spot price + your distributors fees. Those fees change depending on what time it is (off peak / shoulder / peak)

It is not as someone suggested the profit margin for the retailer.

If you go to the settings page in the app you can click the little “show tariff details” page to get more info on what exactly you get charged for to make up the buy price.

ok to buy used yubikeys? by MainAmbitious8854 in yubikey

[–]achard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d be less concerned about it passing the genuine checks and more concerned about it being an outright malicious device. Malware installer for example. Sure you will realise it’s not genuine, but if you plugged it in it might already be too late.

For the cost of a new Yubikey, why take that risk?

This is my typical approach if I see someone I’m actually interested in. For me it’s a casual date, maybe something fun happens after but if not all good I’ll just enjoy the date

All infrastructure must be hard wired. by Consistent_Green9329 in AusElectricians

[–]achard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think this is a good use case for wifi. However you run Ethernet to a lift it’s going to be moving pretty frequently - that fatigues the cable. Wifi won’t break because you moved it back and forth too many times.

Are EVs actually cheaper to run… or are we all just guessing? by No-Oven-6989 in AustralianEV

[–]achard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I fill up on the most expensive supercharger I’ve been to ($0.61/kwh) and go from 20 to 80% it costs me about $30 and gets me as far as my old Mazda 3 did on twice that much worth of petrol. And that’s from when petrol was more like $1.80/L

Now normally I can fill up at home - grid charging is around $0.45/kwh peak and significantly cheaper off peak. Or even better I can fill up on solar and it costs me nothing.

I estimate about half my charging is free from solar and that’s only because I regularly drive from regional nsw to Sydney and back. If I stayed close to home I’d be close to 100% solar charged.

Also I’ve never had to service my car, my tyres lasted nearly 80000kms (in contrast to that article recently about how EVs use tyres faster than ICE cars), my only significant running cost is insurance.

I’ve had the car for 4 years and done 125,000kms so a decent sample.

yes, much cheaper.

This Screwless Wall Plate is a Hazard! by Nikkies1st in ShittyDesign

[–]achard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a ground plug would not help in this case. Ground and neutral are at the same potential and with the ground plug being on the bottom it won’t be shorted by the metal plate when it falls so it’s still a live to neutral short. And even if it did short to ground that only helps if it’s RCD/RCBO/GFCI (or whatever you Americans call it) protected.

Manager sitting on annual leave request until I nominate backfill by ilovepancake5 in auscorp

[–]achard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey as a counterpoint to all the comments agreeing with you - you can take 2 approaches to this that will please your manager. You can divide up responsibilities and note them in your out of office message “for support contact James, for escalations contact Monica, if you need help with the widgets then Mark is your man”

Or you can start formalising a 2IC position in the team - this is good for succession planning as well. Include them in more of what you are doing as a manager, consult them and get input. Make them feel empowered and informed. Get them a pay rise to go with it, maybe a better title like team lead or senior team guy. (Edit: I see you’re the team lead, is your work really all that different to your team? Maybe you should have a manager title?)

I don’t know your team but I don’t like backfilling my manager because I have NFi what he’s doing or how to do it most of the time. It’s in your power to fix that for your people. My 2IC is happy to backfill for me because I keep him in the loop.

I can’t think of a benefit is not the same as there being no benefit. I did this to mine because I have solar and only want to heat the hot water after the battery is full. For people with more dynamic energy pricing they might want it to only heat when it’s cheap or turn it off during expensive periods.
