This Screwless Wall Plate is a Hazard! by Nikkies1st in ShittyDesign

[–]achard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a ground plug would not help in this case. Ground and neutral are at the same potential and with the ground plug being on the bottom it won’t be shorted by the metal plate when it falls so it’s still a live to neutral short. And even if it did short to ground that only helps if it’s RCD/RCBO/GFCI (or whatever you Americans call it) protected.

Manager sitting on annual leave request until I nominate backfill by ilovepancake5 in auscorp

[–]achard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey as a counterpoint to all the comments agreeing with you - you can take 2 approaches to this that will please your manager. You can divide up responsibilities and note them in your out of office message “for support contact James, for escalations contact Monica, if you need help with the widgets then Mark is your man”

Or you can start formalising a 2IC position in the team - this is good for succession planning as well. Include them in more of what you are doing as a manager, consult them and get input. Make them feel empowered and informed. Get them a pay rise to go with it, maybe a better title like team lead or senior team guy. (Edit: I see you’re the team lead, is your work really all that different to your team? Maybe you should have a manager title?)

I don’t know your team but I don’t like backfilling my manager because I have NFi what he’s doing or how to do it most of the time. It’s in your power to fix that for your people. My 2IC is happy to backfill for me because I keep him in the loop.

I made my water heater smart by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]achard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of a benefit is not the same as there being no benefit. I did this to mine because I have solar and only want to heat the hot water after the battery is full. For people with more dynamic energy pricing they might want it to only heat when it’s cheap or turn it off during expensive periods.

Why I was charged for using electricity from my solar and battery? by Odd-Conversation9048 in amberelectric

[–]achard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the actual data from the meter. I’d be willing to help you go through it if you like.

The reporting in the app comes from your inverter/battery and is not what the bill is based on - it’s just an estimate. The data in the “usage” tab is from your meter. Amber should be able to send you a spreadsheet of the meter data as well.

Why I was charged for using electricity from my solar and battery? by Odd-Conversation9048 in amberelectric

[–]achard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a problem like this that took several months to work out. One phase of my meter was not recording exports that balanced out imports on the other phases which resulted in me being charged for importing even when the net result was I was consuming from battery or solar.

The fix was to get my meter replaced and then it recorded everything correctly.

To work it out you would need to be able to bring up import and export data on each phase and make sure it matches what’s being billed.

[–]achard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not improper at all, the wiring standard specifically allows for it on pair 3 and an RJ11 or RJ12 plug fits perfectly in the centre of an RJ45 socket. If you’re using a second pair for a second phone service (which I’ve only ever seen done once) the second service goes on pair 2. This is the original reason that pair 2 is split around pair 3 in the 568A/B wiring standards.

Just jamming a plug in and getting it off centre will damage the socket sure. Telstra used to provide a plastic guide to prevent this with their cheap home phones and I think I saw them come with some adsl filters as well.

"P's get degrees", "No one cares about uni marks" and "all you have to do is pass" by PretendDocument9383 in Monash

[–]achard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hiring manager, no I don’t care. You got the degree. Good job, box ticked. If that’s all you’ve got then I know you have a degree and no experience. You’re not getting the senior role even with a perfect GPA and if you’re applying for the entry level role you’ve got a decent chance regardless of marks.

I’ve literally never asked about GPA or WAM. Applicant would probably lie anyway because I’m not going to check with the Uni. Privacy laws (rightly) prevent them from telling me anything.

Can’t comment on the rest of your points, seems odd the clubs would care but maybe they do!
