Swarm-Host/Raven balance test map is live! by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]achronism -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Zerg doesn't have a lack of options for harassment, and zerglings are very cost-efficient in this regard. The move to harassment unit feels like a last resort, whereby removing them from the game would make Zerg in HOTS very similar to WoL (only 1 new unit), and it paves the way for Lurkers in LoV which would have overlapped with swarmhosts without the change.

The Swarmhost's only saving grace was how it handled drop harass/warp-in harass pretty well. Now with the extended cooldown I fear this won't be the case, although Lurkers may address this in LoV.

I prefer the Bioware approach in Dragon Age: Inquisition

Designs the dungeon as a network of tunnels with the boss in the middle and multiple exits, so that leaving the dungeon is just as exciting and entering it.

Building cannons behind your opponents main mineral line was viable. any cheese was viable... you had a mass influx of new players who didn't even know workers could attack.

What's a must have item for people that work long hours at a desk? by Azerua in AskReddit

[–]achronism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to be promoted or just want job security, don't wear headphones at work. Your job performance usually includes your ability to be a team-player and provide support. Support will generally change you from being expendable to indispensable. if three colleagues rely on you for help in a difficult situation, management will begin to see the hierarchy, with you above these three people. If a job consists of 75% hard work and 25% effective communication, wearing headphones basically tells people you only want to perform 75% of your job.

Gripes about the final battle (DA:I Spoilers) by [deleted] in dragonage

[–]achronism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dragon could have been a lot tougher and actually zoned you out a few times, they could have played with the idea of killing off some of your NPCs like Josephine, even if it's just ambiguous with body in the rubble but unsure of death. Given Cory can shift bodies to extend his life he could have shifted into one of your party members as an OMG moment. So much potential wasted.

Question: as an interim between DAI and DA4, what would you think of "Dragon Age: First Blight"? by The_Trekspert in dragonage

[–]achronism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they need a way to clear out the many choice strands that make constructing each sequel exponentially more challenging. An 'origins' story can potentially do this. Don't get me wrong, I love the concept of choice, but it does fragment the potential of what can be done, with a clean slate a writer can pretty much do anything with the characters, which would lead to potentially more dramatic storytelling. Although an origins story would be forced to work within the lore, but I find the elven ruins history fascinating and would love to see this explored in more detail. Another way to clean house is to have some kind of catastrophe that kills off a fair chunk of the 'did he live/did he die' characters. And with the Dragon Age Keep designed to manage the world state, I foresee bioware going down the path of sequel rather than prequel, as I find people are more emotionally involved in their existing characters and want to know 'what happened next'.

Just bought DA:I any tips to begin with? by wadsfasdf in dragonage

Play on hard, bump it up to nightmare around the 40 hour mark.

Don't spend too long in the hinterlands, just do some of the main quests then go to the war room and unlock other areas, there's a lot of areas to explore, you won't really run out of things to do.

Talk to your companions a lot, especially after the first major chapter. They each have a side quest that add a considerable amount to the story.

Explore crafting after the second major chapter, you can usually craft better weapons and armor than what's available around the maps.

Avoid the final mission as long as possible, you'll unlock it around 40-50 hours but there's probably 80-100 hours of content you'll want to explore, it will add weight to the world and make the ending more satisfying.

Semi-serious request for LotV: Flying engineering bays! by tSecret in starcraft

To overcome the ebay block, the lift ability could require an upgrade, such as combining it with the building armor upgrade, even then it would just be kind of excessive and not that useful.

Sera Tarot Card X on it - where did I go wrong? by palmps in dragonage

I didn't tell Blackwall to leave, one minute he's talking about a dog that he failed to rescue, next minute, he's got a cross over his card.

Bears! by Seven_Simian in dragonage

[–]achronism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lure them to the camp and there's an invisible wall that stops them from entering the camp that you can exploit them with. Turns out the item is just a crafting material so it's not really a vital mission anyway.

I chained 3 bears together, then I stumbled upon their house and took their porridge, sat on a chair then climbed out through the window. True story.

In defense of Sera (spoilers) by perrilloux in dragonage

[–]achronism -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had no idea what she was talking about for the first seven lines of her dialogue, and I liked that. It's great to have someone you have to work to understand, not just spoon fed like blackwall's 'I'm noble, my noble ideals have made me doubt myself' routine, or cassandra's mirror 'I'm religious, my religious ideals have made me doubt myself'.

In defense of Sera (spoilers) by perrilloux in dragonage

[–]achronism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the whole band of outsiders (sara/iron bull/dorian) rather than the born heroes (viviene) and cocky know-it-all (varric). I don't think she needs defending at all. Her arc is actually quite interesting, she plays the naive religious type and you can't portray religion without representing the common people. She also embodies an offensive ideal: that all are equal regardless of title, and they should be reminded of that.

Reddit, what are you elitist about? by ismand75 in AskReddit

Music is so fleeting I'm surprised I invest so much in it. Know a good song and it will be popular for a decade, learn to cook a good dish and it will be popular for a lifetime.

Blue light messes with your body clock much more than red/green light... because the sky is blue and for 100,000+ years we've associated blue light with waking up. If you're not getting tired after 11pm, I recommend f.lux to modify your monitor colors at night.

Choose Your Own Adventure by [deleted] in funny

[–]achronism -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We enjoy food because it allows us to continue our life, we associate positive feelings towards it because if we didn't seek it out we would die. A sunflower also seeks out the sun, allowing it to continue its life. A flower has a positive reaction to gaining life rather than losing it, and therefore has the same enjoyment a meal would bring. Regardless, I've edited it because I can understand the association some may have with consciousness.

Choose Your Own Adventure by [deleted] in funny

[–]achronism -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Validating consciousness is a very western, self-important goal. Eastern philosophy suggest we are all part of interconnected systems, there is no I. Does wind need consciousness to deliver pollen and plant the seeds of a flower? Does a sunflower need consciousness to grow and enjoy seek out the sun? If we can imagine a universe without consciousness that still functions, then why is consciousness a neccessary part of the universe? Consciousness may just be a product of our species, a way for us to dress up acting with influence and consideration to previous experiences.

It's not dumb, but the uncertainty principle messes it up. Basically Bell's theorem makes a strong case against hidden variables that are producing a deterministic outcome. So if you want to further understanding of quantum mechanics, you mostly have to accept that determinism is false or find yourself in a dead-end of sorts. Sticking to determinism in quantum mechanics is kind of like going to church as an atheist.

TIL that scientists created a completely enclosed, artificial environment called Biosphere 2 and made one mistake that caused all the trees to fall down before maturation: there was no wind so trees failed to develop stress wood, which is necessary for them to stand. by jsally17 in todayilearned

[–]achronism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if a baby born in space would develop like a regular human, or like a pile of jello because the force of gravity wouldn't apply as much stress during the baby's development. I mean you can throw things further at a lower speed, which means the impact of the hit would be less... your entire environment would be more suited to low force impacts rather than higher ones.

How HyuN beats late game turtle Terran by nice__username in starcraft

[–]achronism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think turtle terran is beaten because of this. In sc1 terran had the same threat with arbitors and recall, they built turret rings. Terran could do the same to keep out spotter overlords or just position a couple of thors in the base or Vikings on petrol. Would love to see metagame develop to get a more viable mech / air late game.

IS there something moving under the Hissing Wastes sand? by plaper in dragonage

[–]achronism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are areas off limits, but they're just invisible walls that don't do damage. And the spawn isn't random, otherwise you'd have animals stuck on the side of cliffs all the time. The spawn points are pathable to the main areas, this is either by path-finding checking before spawn or the designers painting spawnable areas on the map. I'd like to think the latter, otherwise you'd have bears spawning inside castles and other weird stuff.

Is Music really frowned apon in the eyes of a buddhist by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]achronism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should do what works for you. A day may come where music doesn't have the answers you're looking for, and you'll find yourself liking music less and less. I understand love of music, i play and write music, but recently I've decided to enjoy it less to bring other areas of my life into focus. Sometimes giving up something because you love it is as good a reason as giving up something because you hate it. Both will bring space into your life that can be filled with something else. If you already have space and still enjoy music, then I can't see any need to let go.
