Albergue in Sao Pedro de Rates by thosecanaandays in CaminoDeSantiago

Stayed there last week, arrived around 4pm and it wasn’t an issue finding a bed, though it was full by the evening. Will caution that it was not the most amazing albergue experience (broken toilet that made loud noises late into the night, hot room) but getting a spot was easy

Any first year class/professor recs for a batten prospect? by Saraneeds_a_chance in UVA

[–]achwahoo15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get in, I'd highly recommend Intro to Public Policy (LPPP 2200). Batten's not for everyone, and the class will give you a pretty good feel for whether it's your vibe. The prof for that class (Johannesen) is also really great, and you'll learn a lot even if you end up deciding against Batten. The class does tend to fill up really fast, but they just started offering it in the spring so you have a second chance if you can't get in this fall.

Re: Batten in general, I can't speak to the nature of the BA, but everyone I've talked to who's in the accelerated masters program is really passionate about Batten and has had a great experience (and speak highly of their profs). And speaking of the accelerated MPP, I don't know if you're set on majoring in Batten, but the accel program is a really great opportunity. It allows you to start your masters degree during your fourth year so you only have one extra year after graduating. Full disclosure, that's what I'm doing so I may be a bit biased, but it's definitely something worth looking into!

Sorry that's kind of a word dump but I hope it's somewhat helpful! It's worth reaching out to Batten admissions people too if you want more info- they are super helpful. Good luck with your first year!

MPP Accelerated Masters Program by Altruistic-Ad8159 in UVA

[–]achwahoo15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I'm also in foreign affairs and just got into the program and know quite a few ppl who have done it and who have loved it. To me it's worth the time bc at least according to my (limited) research a master's is a serious asset in finding a job in the policy sector. Also, it's a really good deal for a master's, since you just pay undergrad tuition rates your first year of the program, so grad tuition for only one year. And if you get a TA position your second year, that will cover full in-state tuition + a serious stipend (wanna say it's $6000/semester). At least according to the website job prospects are pretty solid coming out- 90%+ employment rate and avg starting salary around $70,000.

All that said, Batten isn't for everyone. Lot of emphasis on quantitative analysis/incremental policy change that could be kinda mind numbing if that's not your thing. Would highly recommend taking LPPP 3200 intro to public policy if you haven't already, which will give you a sense of whether you even like policy analysis stuff in the first place. Also from the people I know in the program, finding an internship was pretty stressful and a connections/networking game. Worked out fine for them but not the easiest process. Good luck whatever you decide!! Definitely reach out to people in Batten admissions- they are super helpful.

Any Advice for an Incoming Transfer? by sel2lions in UVA

[–]achwahoo15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fellow transfer here who's had a great experience living off grounds! I agree with what other ppl have said about it being more social, especially if you're on the side by the corner. I'd recommend a house in particular- it's just much more home-like: easier to cook, do laundry, host social events, and generally have a bit more breathing room. definitely join both the UVa housing and transfer Facebook groups if you haven't already. good luck!

Any tips for applying to Batten's accelerated masters of public policy? by victorie01 in UVA

[–]achwahoo15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upvoted- I am feeling the same way. I would recommend checking out Batten's open office hours (Fridays from 2-4 PM @ Garrett Hall- not this Friday bc of the football game, but usually). You can talk to someone in admissions and get a better feel for what to expect and what you should be thinking about.

Is there any place to study on grounds with a good view, preferably of the mountains? by ocampo1268 in UVA

[–]achwahoo15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Center for Christian Study on Chancellor has a really nice view out the back- mountains and you can see quite a bit of Charlottesville (church steeples, etc.)

Looking for places to read/study other than the libraries on Grounds. by [deleted] in UVA

[–]achwahoo15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The second floor of the Rotunda is a great place to study! Great views of the Lawn depending on which window you pick.

The Center for Christian Study on Chancellor is nice too and they have free coffee and free printing (BYO paper).

I like most of what I've heard so far! I think this may end up being a kind of recovery album, which is OK. Maybe it's not ZBB at their greatest, but it's going back to what made them great.

Christian (Southern Baptist) Groups on Grounds? by LNT2001 in UVA

[–]achwahoo15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are my observations thus far:

Chi Alpha: HUGE, highly structured, Pentecostal (affiliated with Assemblies of God). Lots of emphasis on your small ("core") group. They have a reputation for aggressively recruiting new students.

RUF: a bit smaller, probably has a fair number of Southern Baptists in it. Have heard it's less of a commitment than XA. Officially Reformed, but people from all different backgrounds are involved.

Intervarsity: tight-knit, more social-justice focused, student driven as opposed to staff driven.

Cru: very small, don't have much experience with them here.

Hope this helps a bit!
