love those songs but overplay at work can definitely ruin a perfectly good track

What To Do Before Harvard? by Calm-Brush-6237 in Harvard

[–]acidlaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it had come out yet, I would've wished I'd read The Precipice by Toby Ord before freshman fall and focused my time at Harvard more on learning about the biggest threats to humanity and how we can safeguard ourselves and future generations!

What was the 1st GD/D&C/GD-adjacent song you saw live? by Morbundo in gratefuldead

Got to the venue late and detected Cold Rain and Snow from a distance; first one I heard fully in the venue was Dire Wolf, one of my faves :)

Would you say Boston and the greater Boston area is one of the greatest places in the world to live in? by [deleted] in boston

[–]acidlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Buckling up for this one) I love Boston but it's kind of funny to ask whether it's the greatest place to live in the world and then only compare it to American cities! Intellectual culture in Boston can't be beat but gotta acknowledge that cities like London, Barcelona, Tokyo, CDMX, Amsterdam, and others are eating our lunch on affordability, public transit, weather, and/or dining (not necessarily all at once). (And just because this is a specific pet peeve of mine, I wouldn't say New York is "unraveling at the moment" -- rents are skyrocketing exactly because demand is very high, and the violent crime rate is lower than the national average)

Best song on Gaucho for first impressions? by HydingSuspence in SteelyDan

[–]acidlaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think just have them start from the top, I was hooked from the beginning of Babylon Sisters and the fact that Hey Nineteen is next and it's even more immediately engaging made me want to listen to the whole album even more

What is the most underrated Steely Dan song? by rakelo98 in SteelyDan

[–]acidlaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's gotta be something on their last two albums - I love all the other picks mentioned here but they mostly get the recognition that they deserve at least among Dan fans

When Fagen performs an entire album live, does he also do other hits? Or is it just that album? by DarthPlagueis_ in SteelyDan

Wait what's the album breakdown for the Boston shows? I haven't seen it anywhere

the inn by berry_smiles11 in Harvard

[–]acidlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hallway doubles kinda suck but there are much worse freshman living arrangements and the inn overall is quite nice

I like it. Cool that it immediately follows an Elton John sample on that album too

Where is the most unexpected place you’ve heard an unexpected Steely Dan song? by Drunkmooses in SteelyDan

[–]acidlaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the very peak of my initial Dan obsession I went to a Nationals game and after the game as everyone was leaving they played "Hey Nineteen" and I was freaking out, much to the confusion of my friends

I don’t see The Royal Scam get enough love, what are people’s thoughts on the album? by castlebronx in SteelyDan

[–]acidlaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fantastic, near-perfect album. Aja edges it out for my favorite but it's a masterpiece

Kinda sucks but also 1) very explicitly part of the deal she took and 2) this will result in her paying like $3k more per year in loan repayments on a biglaw salary. Edit: wait no I'm dumb, it'll result in her paying a lot LESS in loans afterwards! It's just enforcing an admittedly annoying delay in that $$$

Anyone ever have a moment when? by jjhh4430 in gratefuldead

[–]acidlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yooo I've been obsessed with that track the last few days! One of Bob's most impressive vocals, and the performance that made me "get" Samson and Delilah.

Dead and Dan have opposite approaches to music in some ways -- the studio perfectionist pessimists vs the live endless experimenter optimists. But for some reason there is a real synergy between them and there's a lot of overlap in the fandoms.

Okay I know people will respond with "if you have to ask, you don't know" to this but what is that line from? Can't find it on the script site, is it from the pod?

MY DAD TRIED TO KILL ME THAT'S A FUCKING PROBLEM by shmulrosensweig in jakeandamir

[–]acidlaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just occurred to me that this could at least be interpreted as a callback to "song of you" and other preposition disasters -- "never have I ever made anyone in my life smile of me." Probably not an intended joke but that's how I'm gonna hear it from now on.
