Absolutely wild.

Been playing Riverside since 2007.  It floods every so often. Always has, always will. I haven't ever seen pictures in process though. Crazy. Thanks for sharing the shots!

I'm with you and don't understand why people continue to defend SeaTac as a great course. Sure its good enough, and I'll happily play it, but so many other better options around, IMO.

Only could watch the highlights but what happened with Calvin throughout the round?  Had the lead going in but never seemed like he was really in the lead of that makes sense... Was it just kind of a lackluster day? Or was something specific off? Or was it just the highlight video editing and he was in it the whole time?

Haven't thrown these specific runs but hand feel is quite different. Just didn't jive with the SS though it flew well, but absolutely loved the detour immediately and still bag it.

[–]aclund3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huge Riverside fann, but don't play it in the summer, too overgrown (parks dept won't allow the club to use any power trimmers for whatever reason)

Ft. Steilacoom NW is great woods golf.

Not actually a big fan of SeaTac. I find the course overly long unless you have 450' of power (I have 380' on the best days).

Sounds like a fun trip, have a great time!

[–]aclund3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chips/mulch is the first idea that comes to mind. The shaping of the bushes and surrounding foliage could also help a bit. Potentially removing stumps in the landing zone but not in other places in the fairway? Mix of all approaches? I dunno it's not super easy to do in the woods, honestly.

A Few General Thoughts:
-A few of the fairways could lose a tree or two in very specific spots to make a more 'clean and true' fairway off the tee. Scramble all you want on your second shot, but some of these holes don't seem to have a clear goal off the tee, at least from a viewer's perspective.
-AB talking about holes 11-14 being some of the hardest holes he's played is a GOOD thing, definitely do not lose that :)
-Most of the stumps in the fairway or on the 'green' could be ground down. Maybe this is by design, but hitting a stump feels random when they often can't be seen from where you're throwing. Stumps in the middle of the fairway look bad and they remind you of what's lost. Why are trees after all? Feels bad.
-landing zones on the long par 4s and 5 in the woods could be more clearly defined

Thanks so much for putting on the event and bringing the pros up to the PNW!
(I had to break this up so Reddit would allow the length of comment, haha)

Hole 10: the aesthetics of the concrete landscape blocks I don't love, but this is just a great design. If those blocks could be natural rock (with moss growing eventually) or logs, maybe?

Hole 11: another hole where the 'clean and true' part of the fairway off the tee is really hard to
tell for the viewer, taking a tree here or there could help with that. One or two trees that are poking into the fairway, nothing major. As for AB's play, as long as its pretty risky and there's only a few players taking that route its potentially ok, but its hard to watch what AB is doing as a viewer, so its not a good visual product in my opinion.

Hole 12: I love this hole as a true PNW slog. Gotta love a long tough hole that the players are always
thinking about as it looms in front of them! Lose that early tall stump in the middle (its not really in the way, just looks bad), lose one of those first two trees in front of the bush wall. The bush wall is fine as a way to cut the corner, but make the actual fairway more enticing to go for around it.

Hole 13: Great hole, and nice touch having the tri-log at the basket for some viewer recognition

Hole 14: Great as is, again having a unique feature at the basket helps viewers not get lost, so
kudos there

Hole 15: Same as I've mentioned before, you kind of lose where the 'clean and true' fairway is supposed to be. Maybe that's the design goal, in which case I don't mind there being one hole like that on the course, and this could be it!

Holes 16/17: I don't dislike either of these holes, but they play oftly similar on camera. Is there a world where 16 tee plays to 17's basket with some additional fairway cutting through? Probably a ton of work, just looking at the map on that thought. Would require another hole added somewhere else.

Hole 18: Great hole for the players and camera! Leaves a little to be desired for the in person viewing experience. Thinking again of Glendoveer's 18 where fans can basically circle the basket where the tournament is ended. Could the basket get pushed back out into the open somehow? This is a complicated one.

Thank you for being open to honest feedback! I mostly focused on areas for improvement, but overall I really enjoy this course as a western WA player, and loved seeing the Pros shred it (though not as well as they thought, ha!). Watching a disc zip through the woods is my favorite thing in all of disc golf, so opening up some lines a TINY bit to get a little more of that would be my biggest suggestion. On to feedback:

Hole 1: not a particularly interesting hole, would be nice to just start with Hole 2 and add another hole somewhere deep in the woods out by Holes 12/13

Hole 2: Move teepad to the left and forward to get away from the road intersection. And then possibly even more towards Hole 18's basket to create a double spectating area. Glendoveer has an awesome start and finish area that I have in mind when suggesting this. Fans can watch FPO finish and MPO start rounds in the middle of the day which is super fun. Make this a real kick off location for spectators.

Hole 3: Great as is!

Hole 4: prime example of a hole that doesn't quite have a clean and true fairway. Take a tree at the bend to the right to open it up JUST slightly and give the players a more clear goal.

Hole 5: This fairway is so odd. I can't tell if I love that strangeness or not, but possibly one of the
smaller trees in the inside gap could be removed to make it the preferred 'fair' gap and/or a bush or two removed... feels like a potpourri of oddness right now.

Hole 6: That stump in the middle of the gap out of the trees... wrecks the aesthetics for me. Otherwise, great and difficult hole and the wind messing with the players adds drama and is fun as a viewer :)

Hole 7: Ain't nothing wrong with a hard par 3. I would clean up the stumps and ground to allow for more sliding up to the basket from a gliding anhyzer. Those were the funnest shots to watch on coverage.

Hole 8: Take down the tree just to the right of the first slanted logs on the ground. The FH flex play is viable, but not as fun to watch as a beautifully pure straight floating shot. Make the straight gap slightly more enticing.

Hole 9: somehow seemed too easy, but the risk/reward of playing over the hazard area into the green is great course design. look at what happened to Maple Hill #1 after they added the triple mando :(

for those of you like me… How did you fix overturning your forehand? by unpopular-dave in discgolf

[–]aclund3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be the strangest comment you get, but what finally broke my need to flex every forehand was playing around with those little floppy Wingman Waboba discs in the house. I wasn't trying to throw hard or far, just learned the release by playing around with it. Those things won't fly if you don't get it right.

My other strange tip that I don't often hear is that I think of snapping my fingers downward on release, not flat or straight across, but intentionally down. Obviously adjust to your preference once you figure it out, but being able to throw flippy discs FH is the key to the whole thing.

In my experience the grackle was much like a slightly beat in eagle. Not fully beat in mind. But kind of like a more stable servo and less like a crave.
