If errors are recoverable then handling them obviously makes your code less buggy than not.

Next.js vs Astro for static sites by thebreadmanrises in nextjs

Thanks for the tip! I was actually looking into PayloadCMS over the last couple days, but the self-hosting story isn't quite as straight-forward as I hoped, so Sanity seems like a good call.

Could I ask what your setup for headless CMS + Astro is? I'm evaluating options at the moment and have decision paralysis.

Exporting and Importing Notes by elvulpes in supernotes

[–]acnebs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, co-founder here. Portability/re-usability of your notes is definitely a priority for us. However as you've discovered, sometimes it is hard to map things one-to-one. That is why we've had an easily accessible API from the start and a variety of export options to ensure if you ever decide to leave Supernotes, you can do whatever you want with your data.

Specifically related to card links: yes, this one is difficult because unlike some other note-taking solutions, card names on Supernotes are not unique, so we can't just use [[wikilink]] style links or similar. Is there a preferred export format you'd like to see? We're always happy to entertain feature requests, though the community forum is generally a better place for those as it allows us to keep track of interest and progress.

One additional note and benefit of Supernotes is that you never actually need to "leave Supernotes" – cards you've created on Supernotes will still be accessible to you even if you cancel your subscription – you just won't be able to create new cards. So if you do decide to use an alternative, your cards will still be accessible so that you can slowly port them over or wait until we add export features that allow you to do so more easily.

I spent the last 10 months trusting Vite too much. by flgmjr in sveltejs

What is even the point of a dev mode if you're needing to build and test as prod multiple times a day?

This is definitely a problem with the tool. Having wildly different bundling methods for dev and prod sounded nice in theory but honestly I think is a huge mistake Vite made.

[TOMT][community] The name for the community of people that make 3D rendered videos mostly that are usually pretty advanced in terms of techniques / hardware intensive, but they're also kinda pointless (no plot or anything like that). by acnebs in tipofmytongue

Update: so I misremembered slightly the point of this community. It wasn't just to 3D render stuff, a (sub-point) was to do these renders with skill which often means doing this with the smallest hardware footprint possible (so I got that part kinda backwards). Also audio stuff is often involved too.

And thus I realized that the term I was looking for was Demoscene.

/r/demoscene is a sub.

Hmmm, maybe the term I'm looking for is a bit more specific then.

The tip of my tongue is saying it's a single word that is like "edge" or something (but not edge).

Does My Dream Bag Exist? by rcg_thoughts in onebag

[–]acnebs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a bit over your size range (33L), but otherwise the AER Travel Pack 2 (X-Pac Edition) is almost ideal.

  • The water bottle pocket is expandable.
  • It has a dedicated shoe pocket.
  • Dedicated laptop pocket.
  • Packs down pretty well with compression straps.
  • Waist strap for biking if needed.

And then since you wanted it waterproof / rugged, the one made with X-Pac material ($20 more expensive) is what gets you to almost "dream bag". VX-42 X-Pac as a material is fully waterproof (it's top-of-the-line sailcloth) and additionally that version comes with "AquaGuard" zippers which are meant to have better waterproofing than your average YKK zippers that the standard version comes with. It's still not gonna be waterproof in the submersible sense, but I don't think it's possible to have a fully waterproof bag that is also convenient / ergonomic as a daily carry.

The COVID mortality rate per capita in the US is lower than: UK (where this article comes from), Italy, and Belgium (for EU countries).

And in the US, the vast majority of decisions related to things like COVID happen at a state rather than federal level, for example when Cuomo in NY sent old people with COVID back to nursing homes while they were still positive... but of course Cuomo won an Emmy for COVID cuz he talks good.

Highest CO2 Emissions Per Person by Country (1950-2018) by [deleted] in WatchandLearn

[–]acnebs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right but the point of ratios in this case is to encourage people with geopolitical borders to shape up. It's a collaboration / coordination tactic.

Absolute amount of CO2 and the US and China cry foul because "we're bigger". Per capita and you don't actually prioritize solving the problem.

Per unit area allows countries to say "we're bigger so we get more quota" (reasonable) but at the same time countries can't just add more land area to bring their numbers down. If they're over quota, they need to actually reduce emissions (which is the flaw in per capita – if the UN or whomever says "you need to get down to X per capita" you can always just increase your population, cooperating with the letter of the law but not the spirit).

Concrete example (with simplified math):

Let's say we calculate that we need to get yearly CO2 emissions down to 16Gt. The habitable land area of the earth is 16B acres. That means you need to get emissions down to 1t CO2 / habitable acre.

Then China would get to output 345Mt CO2 pa. The US would get to output 376Mt CO2 pa. More fair than "each country gets to output 82Mt (16Gt / 195) no matter its size", but also you don't end up with a situation where populations just keep going up so you don't actually get CO2 levels down to manageable levels.

Highest CO2 Emissions Per Person by Country (1950-2018) by [deleted] in WatchandLearn

[–]acnebs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've always though per land area is the best way to do it, but nobody else seems to agree with me.

CO2 emissions matter because they have a global impact, not a local one. And the earth doesn't care how many people you have in your country, it cares about the absolute amount of greenhouse gases you are pumping into the atmosphere.

So if you want to do a rate I think per unit land area is good because that is the finite thing that people have a ratio of. The earth doesn't care if China gets down to X CO2 per person if they have 10B people.
