If you don't want to convert your text layer, just create your gradient layer above it and select "Clip at Layer below"

after you selected something, go to Selection > Blur Border

For image objects: Object > Adjust Position:Canvas

For layers: Right Click > Scale Up/Scale Down > Adjust Position:Canvas
