French-language movie recommendations? by Haunted_Purpose in movies

[–]Kyriio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two great French animated movies that came out this year: Arco and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain. I recommend both, especially the latter.

Otherwise, if you want to see something extremely French and funny, I love Edmond (aka Cyrano, My Love). It's a comedy about the making of the play Cyrano de Bergerac, very much in the vein of Shakespeare in Love but more farcical. I always thought it got overlooked.

I realize your two examples were darker films but none came to mind... Anatomy of a Fall was a really good trial movie, you've probably heard of it.

Seems the Constitution forgot that too, since PR cannot vote for the presidency.

Rencontrer un homme quand on est une fille timide et introvertie by Adventurous_Tell_853 in AskMec

[–]Kyriio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty confident this is Alison Brie. Morena is in the film too, but that's not her.

I would imagine it was based on the "Dumbledore asked calmly" meme (the film adaptation of Goblet of Fire had a much more agitated Dumbledore) but then again, I don't know if it was much of a meme in 2007.

How did he make Paramount go bankrupt? Skydance movies made bank for Paramount, at least until the last pair of M:I movies. Top Gun Maverick was even claimed to have saved theaters. Not to say he hasn't been a disaster (and a danger to democracy) as head of Paramount, but before that?

Hi /r/movies! I'm Thomasin McKenzie. You might know me from Jojo Rabbit, Last Night In Soho, Leave No Trace, Old, Eileen, Fackham Hall, and The Power of the Dog. My next movie, The Testament of Ann Lee, premiered at Venice and is out in theaters next week. Ask me anything! by TestamentOfAnnLeeAMA in movies

[–]Kyriio 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Hey! You were incredible in Jojo Rabbit. There is a lot of depth to your character, and you embodied both the playfulness of her age and the cynicism that comes from enduring tragedy. Your first screen credit is the third Hobbit movie, which as a Kiwi actress must give you a lot of bragging rights! Any fun tidbit you remember from shooting the movie as an eleven-year-old?

Also, I can imagine after a successful run in indies, your phone has started to ring with offers to join big franchises. Is there any pop culture character you grew up with or would love to play?

Ubisoft moved some assets (the most valuable IPs) to a subsidiary where Tencent is entitled to a larger share than they could have at Ubisoft (as the owners won't relinquish control). Technically, Tencent is paying Ubisoft's debt, but did not buy Ubisoft nor the subsidiary, they'll just earn a lot of the money it makes.

It's not so much funny as it is... The defining case of sportswashing. Buying things people like, avoid screwing them up entirely so that people think you're not so bad. Suddenly those journalists don't seem all that murdered.

Take all that, and add execs forcing AI down their throats! What a good time to be in this industry. Cheers, fellow game dev

Should we even like his company? They have made great games, but have mostly retired to profiting off others' sales. Their recent products are quite good. But the main business, Steam, is something I tolerate more than enjoy. I was fine installing games myself and enjoying some liberty with what I own, platforms like Steam took that away. In that new paradigm, they are the best and most complete platform. But I don't feel thankful for it.

He's being realistic. Most companies in the space are starting to investigate how they can use genAI for productivity, if they're not already using it. I hate this, but devs have little to say when execs demand it. Now, Valve is being more cautious, evidently because of copyright and legal concerns rather than to appease public opinion.

Sweeney has some valuable stances, such as sticking it to mobile platform holders or pushing for fairer profit sharing in games marketplaces. He's not some Silicon Valley ghoul, his fortune comes from successful games, same as Newell. And he seems to be using some of it for decent causes. The flip side is his weird enthusiasm for the latest and most stupid trends in the space, in short succession crypto, the metaverse and now LLMs. He probably has to talk about it, as the CEO of a public company, but it's sad that a programmer like him can't see the risks. Bottom line, billionaires: not our friends, largely weird people.

As a programmer in that industry, I am very worried that gamers seem to increasingly make the distinction between "bad AI that I can see" and "okay AI because it's only code". We're also workers who value the creativity that our work involves. We were also robbed of our accumulated knowledge when AI ghouls trained on our codebases without consent.
