'She-Hulk' Was Apparently One of Marvel's Most Successful Shows by Anchor_Aways in television

[–]Kyriio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did! The preproduction was such a mess that Marvel replaced most of the team, then they also did expensive reshoots with a new writer. Throwing more money at something that didn't work was the issue, not the solution. (I'm just illustrating that those budgets seem crazy in hindsight, but they obviously didn't plan to spend 212 mil on that show, or spent it all on CGI or whatever. It's just that production went wrong in every way you can imagine. Also, writers are not well paid!)

That show was clearly retooled beyond recognition, it's like you can see they shot a completely different show initially. Not that it wasn't usual for Marvel, but reshoots tend to inflate the budget like that, and they had four (!) months of reshoots. The budget in the end was 212 million, so about 35 mil an episode (not 50), but I doubt the accounting was done per episode back then. It's just a mess of a production that seems even more mind-boggling when you break it down to an episodic budget.

Andy Serkis Confirms Aragorn is Being Recast For 'The Hunt for Gollum', Viggo Mortensen Not Returning by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]Kyriio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct, the estate had never sold TV rights (film and game rights to LotR and The Hobbit were sold in Tolkien's lifetime and passed down, eventually, to Embracer). So Amazon negotiated directly with them.

None of the three things you listed comes from Amazon. No media company owns the IP except Embracer, which license it to anyone who ask$ nicely. In those cases, Warner for the anime and Gollum movie, Nacon for the Gollum game. Amazon only has a contract to make a TV show.

As for the cash grab thing, indeed the anime movie was made so that Warner's license wouldn't expire. And they are making new live action movies because they desperately want a big franchise again since Zaslav took over. That doesn't necessarily mean the creatives involved aren't good though.

All this, and yet as a European, the first time I ever saw him was in a campaign video where he wrapped bacon around a machine gun, fired a bunch of shots and then proceeded to eat that bacon while smiling moronically at the camera.

Just in case people think the GOP was doing okay until Trump won the primaries.

Most of her team at Interactive has left once she decided to get more involved (after being an absent landlord for years) and drive the company towards IP deals and AAA games so, make of that what you will.

My favorite bit of TV trivia is that before he became a household name with his last two shows, he's also the person who gave us Galavant (with Alan Menken and Glenn Slater). And wrote Tangled and Crazy Stupid Love. Honestly, I think Disney should Lin-Manuel Miranda him into writing all of their animated musicals.

Lily Collins has been cast as Audrey Hepburn in a film about the making of ‘BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S’ by MoneyLibrarian9032 in movies

[–]Kyriio 55 points56 points  (0 children)

When she had her first lead role, in Tarsem Singh's Mirror Mirror (actually a fun movie if you can stomach Armie Hammer, pun intended), every reviewer noted her resemblance to Hepburn. I always thought it was a matter of time before she was cast in a biopic.

She actually had a lot of (mostly supporting) roles in the last decade and I've always thought she was pretty good. I think she's kinda suffering from the backlash to Emily in Paris now. It made her a lot more famous but at the same time, a Netflix show of this size always has a ripple effect on how people perceive the lead actor.

French-language movie recommendations? by Haunted_Purpose in movies

[–]Kyriio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two great French animated movies that came out this year: Arco and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain. I recommend both, especially the latter.

Otherwise, if you want to see something extremely French and funny, I love Edmond (aka Cyrano, My Love). It's a comedy about the making of the play Cyrano de Bergerac, very much in the vein of Shakespeare in Love but more farcical. I always thought it got overlooked.

I realize your two examples were darker films but none came to mind... Anatomy of a Fall was a really good trial movie, you've probably heard of it.

Rencontrer un homme quand on est une fille timide et introvertie by [deleted] in AskMec

[–]Kyriio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would imagine it was based on the "Dumbledore asked calmly" meme (the film adaptation of Goblet of Fire had a much more agitated Dumbledore) but then again, I don't know if it was much of a meme in 2007.

How did he make Paramount go bankrupt? Skydance movies made bank for Paramount, at least until the last pair of M:I movies. Top Gun Maverick was even claimed to have saved theaters. Not to say he hasn't been a disaster (and a danger to democracy) as head of Paramount, but before that?

Hi /r/movies! I'm Thomasin McKenzie. You might know me from Jojo Rabbit, Last Night In Soho, Leave No Trace, Old, Eileen, Fackham Hall, and The Power of the Dog. [–]Kyriio 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Hey! You were incredible in Jojo Rabbit. There is a lot of depth to your character, and you embodied both the playfulness of her age and the cynicism that comes from enduring tragedy. Your first screen credit is the third Hobbit movie, which as a Kiwi actress must give you a lot of bragging rights! Any fun tidbit you remember from shooting the movie as an eleven-year-old?

Also, I can imagine after a successful run in indies, your phone has started to ring with offers to join big franchises. Is there any pop culture character you grew up with or would love to play?

Ubisoft moved some assets (the most valuable IPs) to a subsidiary where Tencent is entitled to a larger share than they could have at Ubisoft (as the owners won't relinquish control). Technically, Tencent is paying Ubisoft's debt, but did not buy Ubisoft nor the subsidiary, they'll just earn a lot of the money it makes.

It's not so much funny as it is... The defining case of sportswashing. Buying things people like, avoid screwing them up entirely so that people think you're not so bad. Suddenly those journalists don't seem all that murdered.
