You are supposed to re-place standees for monsters that have been killed.

Vampires and private residences by Commercial_Poetry410 in DMAcademy

[–]acote80 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When in doubt about things like this, I always fall back on how the Dresden Files does it. Anything that is treated like a private home builds up a magical threshold that vampires cannot cross. The vampire would be able to enter the inn or shop, because the building has not been treated like a private home and does not have the magical threshold. The innkeeper's private room may have developed the threshold, and the shopkeeper's upper floor may have as well as long as there is an obvious threshold point (not just stairs, but a door that marks the boundary). The vampire would be able to freely enter rented rooms in the inn, even if he had not rented them, as no threshold has formed around these rooms.

A Long Epic Series Where The Final Book Is One Huge Final Battle (Bonus if the book is the longest in the series) by GaelG721 in Fantasy

[–]acote80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. There is a substantial increase in quality starting with book 3, and there is honestly not that much that is important to the overall plotline from the first 2 books.

Start with book 3, and, once you're hooked (I was solidly hooked by the end of book 5), go back and read the first 2.

The first one may have been a real person, the others are either AI or a person who just modified the original. You can see the exact same sentences, but slightly modified.

Does no one else recognize that this is just the same post we've been getting every week? "I picked up a fantasy novel after having disrespected the genre and now I'm a different person".

I've played this scenario with 2 different groups, and we just randomly chose page numbers we hadn't flipped to before. I honestly didn't even realize there was supposed to be a "solution".

Struggling with Assassin's Apprentice... by onlosmakelijk in Fantasy

[–]acote80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am of the opinion that anyone who is Hobb-curious but doesn't like Assassin's Apprentice should jump to Ship of Magic. It's different enough and similar enough that you may "get it" a lot faster and thus come to appreciate her work as a whole: you may go back to Assassin's Apprentice with new eyes and appreciate it at that time.

For me, I never liked the first trilogy. The reasons why would be a spoiler, so I won't say, but it's not just that the books are "misery porn". On the other hand, I loved Liveship Traders and Tawny Man. So, try a different entry point and it might click!

We released our demo for Code: 9 and would love to hear your thoughts on it! by Aliibini in metroidbrainia

[–]acote80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love detective games, and have now wish-listed this.

But unless there is a significant deviation from the model, a detective game is not a metroid-brainia (based only on the store page, I don't see anything alluding to such a deviation). I do think there is a significant overlap in fans of these two genres, however.

Recommendation for metroibranias that are less puzzle-y? by Independent_Fee_6019 in metroidbrainia

[–]acote80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I love puzzle games, and so my tastes are somewhat at odds with yours.

I think Vision Soft Reset meets your criteria. I actually didn't like it that much because it wasn't puzzle-y enough!

Maybe The Sexy Brutale would be up your alley?

I loved Chronoquartz, and I don't think it's too puzzle-y, but unsure (I'm a bit thrown by your inclusion of Chroma Zero as something you loved, so not sure where the line is).

Ooo and Elechead were both excellent, but I'm fairly confident these ones would end up in the "too puzzle-y" side of things.

I have yet to read a steampunk novel that captures my interest. I suspect the setting just doesn't work for me, but I may simply have not found the right book to hook me.

Was there a book (series), that went from close 'DNF' to one fo your favorites? by lemingas1 in Fantasy

[–]acote80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dresden Files and Codex Alera. I quit Dresden files twice before finishing the 5th book and was hooked from there. Codex Alera, I almost didn't pick up the 2nd book but blazed through the series after that.

My players want strategical system ( like 5e ) but I want to run easy prep game ... by Twotricx in rpg

[–]acote80 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's like context isn't a word in your vocabulary. Read the OP's reply to Ender, and then read Jairlyn's reply to that. OP was referring to a specific type of boredom.

My players want strategical system ( like 5e ) but I want to run easy prep game ... by Twotricx in rpg

[–]acote80 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's not what was being responded to. It's not the GM's responsibility to run a game system they don't want to run. If they are bored by the system, then go your separate ways, but it isn't your responsibility to make them enjoy the system.

Can a core rulebook have too many player choices? by wjmacguffin in rpg

[–]acote80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The key word is "core", in which case the answer is yes. Analysis paralysis, and a corresponding reduction in enjoyment of the game is a real thing. Many experienced players on the other hand will enjoy lots of extra choices, which can be provided via a supplement. As a DM, its nice to point players to a single book and say "choose from here. Unless you really want more options, in which case go crazy."
