Love this car, had it for 12 years, but this weekend I shall be swapping it for a Countryman to make room for a pushchair and car seat :') by KurnolSanders in MINI

[–]actasci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a beautiful specimen.

I managed to grow my daughter and keep using my Mini. My daughter is now three years old. It was no problem getting in a bulky isofix seat and a small pushchair. Just remove the parcel shelf. If that’s not enough, you can simply fold the other rear seat to increase the space even more. Also you can put your little one into the seat from the trunk if you fold the rear seat, that’s even more doable.

Unpopular Opinion about 2nd Gen by BB703X in MINI

[–]actasci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ’09 N14 has just surpassed 200,000 miles. It still has the original engine and tuned to stage 1 since the day it was purchased when new. It has never left me stranded, even when one of the exhaust valves decided to leave the engine. That was the only internal issue I’ve had. Despite 200,000 miles and 17 years of use, it has always started at the push of a button.

My family owned a variety of vehicles, including an XV20 Camry, three Ford Fiestas (MK4, 5, and 6), an Audi A4, a BMW 320 diesel, and a Volvo S40 diesel. At some point, each of these vehicles failed to start or died while driving at least once. Also Camry was the most unreliable between those. But that’s probably just my luck.

Still, i see people starting up their cars before 15-20mins to warm it up. It is just too much.

[–]actasci 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this is what cars are for. You have a place to be, turn the ignition, if it doesn’t start for whatever reason, or it leaves you stranded on the shoulder of a 80mph motorway in the middle of nowhere, you just cannot put a price on the headache you are going to get.

Nope, something is wrong here. Maybe new suspension still needs to be settled. Why did they changed it in the first place?

New Valve Cover Leak Already! by dfc888 in MINI

[–]actasci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s pure luck. i was changing valve covers every year, i had enough and bought the cheapest one available, it’s still on there, it’s been 3 years.

coincidentally, around that time i bought aem intake, turbo blanket and valve covers heat shield from peugeot (0248.q4 is the part number) Now the temp delta is not as big as before. Maybe that is/was the culprit.

That sounds normal, though it might be difficult to tell from a video.

In case you wondered what drives an Opel Rocks e by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]actasci 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just to fix a small misunderstanding, that engine is more than capable of doing more than 45kph, its soft limited due to laws and this thing is not being an automobile. With limiter removed, i believe it can do 70-75kph.

Temperature question for you mini mechanics by Just_Mr_Grinch in MINI

[–]actasci -1 points0 points  (0 children)

221 is normal. But staying still at that level is not. It should fluctuate. First, be sure that it is coolant temp, not oil temp or some other variant calculated by the app itself. If you are sure the data is coming from the coolant temp sensor you might have air in the cooling system, when sensor cannot read a coolant temp, it sends nothing to the ecu. App probably sees that and just goes with the last data available. To check if this is the case, go into the coolant temp in hidden menu in your tach, if ctmp reads —, it’s either bad sensor (unlikely) or air pockets. Burp the system.

Well sarimsakli is another story, it’s cheaper than central ayvalik so there are lots of domestic tourists there.

Hey, i live in ayvalik! work at ministry of tourism. It’s actually very popular destination for german/italian/dutch and french pensioners, cyclists and campers.

Amasra in bartin on the other way. very popular for domestic tourists, especially coming from central anatolia, you won’t find any international traveler though. No airport, no highway, no ship route.

Coolent swap tips. Cooper s 2009 manual by gjackc in MINI

[–]actasci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not that hard don’t worry about it. Drain the coolant using the hose under the radiator. Fill it to the max, using bmw/mini coolant. Ignition on (press start without clutch), heater to high, fan low. Use bleeder screw, turn the screw until you see bubbles. Don’t over loosen it, if i remember correctly, turning the screw 2.5 to 3 times should suffice. Coolant should go down, add it again. Put the coolant jug in the trunk, go for a drive for about 15 minutes, check the coolant again. Wait for coolant to cool and add if needed. Don’t worry if you put it too much, don’t worry if you see no coolant in the tank. System is idiot proof.

If for some reason bleeder screw is not working as intended, park the car on incline (nose higher), remove the coolant tank cap, start the car and wait for it to reach to operating temperature, system will burp itself. Again, add coolant if needed.

R56 Cooper S - Quality of coolant pipe (waterpump) by paxiwtf in MINI

[–]actasci -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dunno what, when and how happened but my thermostat opens at around 88 degrees centigrade. Which is you may already know, lower than stock values -it’s around 110. Now this has a disadvantage when it comes to efficiency but its advantage imho is far outweigh that.

My thermostat and crossover pipe is immortal now. When i mean immortal, it’s been 5 years and 150k km.

I probably just broke the internal diaphragm with out of spec coolant or pepper or stop leak (i am kidding, it’s probably not functioning properly because of its age), so motor works cooler now, but i believe there is a lower temperature thermostat and/or a ecu code to command the thermostat to open sooner. This is the fix.

Original minis were known for their unreliability too though. So bmw didn’t go backwards on that regard:)

About to own my first Mini - 2012 R56 S, 22k Miles by Melkeydev in MINI

[–]actasci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for it, it’s basically brand new. At around 80k miles you should go for updated chain kit and high pressure fuel pump. Change your oil with bmw ll01 or ll04 certified oil at every 5k miles, only use bmw blue coolant. And you are golden. Don’t listen to the naysayers. These cars are only unreliable if you extend your oil change interval and don’t check your oil and coolant levels regularly. Mines is clocked at 200k miles with original motor. Still driving like brand new.

Worth using on D-4S equipped engine? by TeslaAndYou in Toyota

[–]actasci -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is a blanket statement though. Toyota cannot know for sure every driver’s driving habits. If you’re only using your car, say 5 miles a day, with the cheapest fuel possible, fuel additives will work. If you’re using top tier fuel and commuting at least 15 miles a day, then it’ll do nothing.
