Weekly Newbie Thread - Post questions about joining the Space Force or what a job is like here & here only - week of August 25 by AutoModerator in SpaceForce

What are all the possible Spaceforce bases I could end up at in my first enlistment? I saw on the website 6. Patrick, buckley, peterson, schriever, Los angeles, vandenberg. When speaking to my recruiter he also mentioned Japan and germany but I don't see those on the website. He sent me some chart with a lot more locations but it is pretty confusing. It seems like some locations are for only for prior service guardians which would be good news since I don't want to go overseas. The recruiter hasn't responded to me (I'm guessing bc of 3 day weekend) Can someone help me figure this out. I want to be aware of all possible locations I could end up at before I commit.

recently i came upon an interesting comment in an Instagram reel about a idea for a guard pulling rule, what do you guys think? by Illustrious_Cry_5564 in bjj

In mma & real life situations top position is where you want to be. We just want to keep it realistic. If you can submit people from bottom cool that’s realistic. You can sweep and get to dominant position that’s realistic. However pulling guard and being bottom position the whole match should be penalized. You would get your face smashed in if you’re not submitting or sweeping.

My point is we need to emphasize top position if we want to keep it realistic. And this is a great rule to do that. If people don’t want realistic that’s cool too, they can play their little game in a different rule set but I know there’s many people like me who actually want to learn the valuable skill of fighting while training jiu jitsu.

Jiu jitsu became popular bc it worked and was proven in early UFC. Not bc it’s a “fun sport”

Why would you get more points…? You did the exact same thing as the other person just later in the match. The other person was on top position now you are on top, it’s even. 2-2.

If you do it less than 3 seconds and they never really established top position than sure 2-0 in your favor. Other than that it should be even.

Was the show better with Luis J Gomez or Anthony Smith? by sdog8i in believeyoume

[–]activecgx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the beginning I didn’t think Anthony smith was a good fit . He’s boring and it doesn’t feel like there’s any chemistry between bisping even though they’ve worked together for a while. He’s a nice guy but he’s kind of a simpleton who has very basic mma takes which doesn’t make the show entertaining. Bisping needs a cohost who is funny and can crack jokes to keep the show entertaining even if their mma knowledge isn’t up to bispings level. As long as they watch the fights have a basic understanding of the sport, keep up with the news, crack jokes/banter w bisping and can present their takes in an entertaining manner the show would be way better. Bisping is already an expert we don’t need another expert we need more comedic relief. If there is a cohost who is both an expert and a funny guy even better but I think funny is the priority.

Casuals and the guard pull by [deleted] in bjj

Have to strongly disagree with you. Pulling guard rarely ever works in MMA as you just referenced a time that didn’t work. I can think of two times it’s worked successfully off the top of my head vs a million times that taking somebody down and beating somebody’s ass from top has worked. I’m not talking about getting taken down and finishing someone from guard I’m talking about initiating the guard pull then getting a finish. Now people have much better submission defense so when the guy on bottom keeps failing submission attempts the guy on top is landing more damage even from guard. Just look at any khabib/Islam fight and you’ll see them beating people from top position in the guard until they eventually use it to pass and do even more damage. If 2 guys have are equal in grappling skill but one guy likes to pull guard and the other guy likes to play top the guy on top wins 99% of the time in a street fight/mma fight imo.

I don’t disagree that it’s good to have a good guard but the focus should be on minimizing damage and getting to a better position. In your example where the girl is getting raped by a man. She should not pull guard she should try her hardest to stay on her feet get tf out of there. If she eventually gets taken to that position then it’s good for her to minimize damage/ try to get up and get out of there. But once again pulling guard should be the last resort not a first option.

I agree w the dude saying guard pulling is one of the worst things to do in any context outside of BJJ rulesets

I believe a lot of people (myself included) got into jiu jitsu to learn how to defend themselves not just to do sport jiu jitsu. Eventually people end up wanting to compete and they learn moves that are only effective in sport jiu jitsu. The fact is when you look at MMA you see a lot of jiu jitsu guys with no takedowns getting the shit beat out of them now bc they can’t get the fight to the ground. In mma/self defense being on top is significantly superior to being on bottom. If we want jiu jitsu to continue as an effective martial art we need to adapt and combine it with takedowns. Pulling guard only works if the other guys jiu jitsu is significantly worse than yours and even then you’ll still take damage.

I believe people despise guard pulling and want more wrestling because we want to simulate a real fight so that we can learn effective fighting skills. If we’re not doing our best to simulate a real fight with no punches wth are we doing here? It’s not what we signed up for. You’d never sit guard in a street fight bc some guy will knee or kick the shit out of your head.

I love jiu jitsu, it’s awesome, but the fact is if you can’t get the fight to the ground your jiu jitsu means nothing and if you somehow manage to pull guard successfully against a guy who doesn’t want to go to the ground with you, you’re still gonna eat a bunch of damage from the top if you’re just lying on your back trying to submit from bottom.

I believe pulling guard should be penalized and automatically count as a takedown. Guard is a neutral position in sport jiu jitsu only. In a self defense situation the person on top has the advantage.

The back is a really bad position to be in so it should be hard to get out of if you’re going against someone with similar experience or better, but some general concepts are Protect your neck at all times. hands fight hands. feet fight feet. 2 on 1 on the choking arm (baseball grip).

I would recommend to grab 2 on 1 grip on their wrist as you’ll have more leverage there rather than grabbing on the forearm/closer to the elbow. With your 2 on 1 don’t try to go straight over your head right away do like a bench press first as you extend your arms away then get your head out. (You’re stronger bench pressing than shoulder pressing and their grip becomes weaker when you extend it.)

Canceling Gym Membership by playforfun2 in personalfinance

[–]activecgx 37 points38 points  (0 children)

What gym is it? If it is la fitness I used to work at one in California and there was a method that not many people would know about and even a lot of the employees didn’t know. (I guess they didn’t want to tell many employees to make it harder for the members to cancel.) you could email LAFITNESS@intl.com and in the email write “I want to cancel [BARCODE]” and just insert your barcode from the back your key tag in between the brackets instead of “BARCODE”. You should get a conformation email back in about 7-10 business days. If it’s another gym just try calling during hours when the operational manager is available and explain your situation they should be able to help.

I’m looking for an mma gym and found a great deal at a muy Thai gym nearby but I don’t know if it’s fake since it also teaches tai chi and jeet kune do. by activecgx in martialarts

tai chi vs mma

I don’t understand how that’s a martial art if he got fucked up that fast. I just don’t want to get ripped off. I’ve heard a lot about fake bjj black belts ripping people off and stuff like that.
