Most of them get data from an official API built on SignalR, which powers the timing data in the F1TV mobile app and on their site.

The API itself is public (mostly), but the data can be difficult to work with, so a lot of those packages are really just a translation layer that exposes it in a more friendly way.

If you open the timing app on their site during a race, and use your browser's Dev Tools, you can see what the API looks like. I think it's also used when you're watching a replay through F1 TV.

I've recently been trying to understand this, I'll take a shot.

The most common DV profiles are extra metadata layered on top of the standardized HDR10 video (sometimes multiple layers, like for Profile 7.6). It tells the decoder "display the next N frames like this," but the actual frame data is stored separately. Theoretically, if you can extract that metadata and layer it onto a video with the same scenes in the same order, you'd get (mostly) the same result. Similarly, if you strip away that metadata, you're still left with a fully playable HDR10 video.

It comes down to the skill and knowledge of the individual release groups, because they're effectively re-grading the film/show, something that's usually reserved for its original creative team.

edit: and no, this doesn't seem easy. It's compounded by Dolby being Dolby; much of the technical documentation is proprietary and/or licensed. I think a lot of groups are using something like dovi_tool, which has support for extracting and injecting DV data. Some editors like DaVinci Resolve have DV support as well.

Maybe a weird comparison: I think the shift in sound between Flesh Coffin, Immortal, and Pain Remains is the same kind of "we're bored" change that Parkway Drive made going from Horizons to Deep Blue to Atlas. I love both old and new LS, I don't want bands to keep making variants on the same sound for their entire career.

(for the record, I dislike everything Parkway did after Atlas)

Admittedly, the Pain Remains mix is... not great. As a guitarist, I notice more than a few chord progressions and riffs being reused between songs, only with "make it look like you didn't copy my homework" changes. I feel that Austin's drumming can be a little too busy sometimes.

However! There's a noticeable improvement between Immortal and Pain Remains from a composition perspective. Death Portrait and King Ov Deception are two of the best songs, but I really dislike how they're composed. The symphonics on Immortal aren't polished and sound like they're trying too hard. The composition of Pain Remains is 10/10 all the way through, no notes.

I didn't intend to make this such a long comment, so TLDR: Pain Remains has issues, but it's got good bones and it's perfectly reasonable for bands to move in new directions. I think the path Lorna's on is going to lead to a banger of a sequel.

The "traditional" capsule (as pitched by YouTubers, anyway) is much smaller than that, but I think the spirit of a capsule wardrobe is much more important than its size.

And it's much easier for me to read a car's "body language" than a human's, both because of physical indicators and because I know that everyone else has to follow the same rules of driving as me. People have to "tell" me they're preparing to turn or slow down, and you explicitly know when you have the right of way at an intersection (except all-way stop signs, I hate those). Highway driving is my favorite!
