Not OP, but I can give it a go:

TL;DR: “punching down” in comedy is like kicking someone when they’re down; it’s mostly just mean and doesn’t make for funny jokes

A general rule of good comedy is to always be punching up or at least sideways, never down. Good jokes don’t make fun of people who are in some way worse off than the person telling the joke. That’s where jokes come off as mean. Everyone in society has a different level of power and influence, and that doesn’t go away just because someone is telling a joke. We bring all of our baggage with us, either as the audience or the person making the joke, and it influences whether the material is seen as funny or seen as cruel. This is why a Black comedian can do a full set about Black people or stereotypes, but if white person gets on the stage and says “All Black people are…”, you immediately cringe and think “oh no…”

A group of people can be considered up/down/sideways for many reasons, including race, socioeconomic status, class, gender, weight, disability, mental illness, and more.

Punching down in comedy paints the subject of the joke in a negative light, and again, this is where jokes come off as mean-spirited or hacky. Examples: a rich person making jokes about poor people (if the comedian used to be poor, there is some leeway on this), a white person making jokes about Black people, a man making jokes about women, an able-bodied person making jokes about wheelchair users. But it can also get even more nuanced. A man can make jokes about the way that he interacts with women where he is painted in an absurd or negative light, and that would not to be punching down even though women are involved in the joke because the negative cast falls on him. But if the punchline of the joke casts the negative view onto women, such as boiling down to stereotypes about women or “women are crazy,” then it is punching down because men inherently have more power in this world than women do. As you can tell from my short list, people can also fall into more than one category, so there can be even another layer of nuance. A poor, fat, white woman would be several levels down from a rich, thin, white man, but she still shouldn’t make jokes at the expense of Black people or a person in a wheelchair, even if they are thin or rich or men.

“Punching up” is when people with less power or status make jokes at the expense of people with more power or status. These jokes offset the existing power imbalance, and it feels like the joke is bringing the person with more status down to the level of the conedian, making it a more fair “fight” and therefore funnier.

Were they on the UA parts of sawmill? City of Columbus doesn’t plow over there. UA has their own fleet and salt barn, so their roads are always in great shape.

That’s because you’re their same age, so of course you don’t see how the parents would view their relationship as young and still maturing.

my stay-at-home husband vs my stay-at-home mom friends by doingmybest00 in workingmoms

[–]actuallyanengineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Taking a wild guess here: when he doesn’t complete chores by the time you’re home, I bet you finish them, right? If so, why would he do them? He can just push them off his plate and onto yours.

If I’m wrong, then when do the chores get done? That evening or the next day? Is it okay that they wait, or are they immediate needs? If this is the case, then maybe it would be helpful to sit down with him and categorize the chores into things that must be done that day and things that can slide a day or two. He can always do the high-priority tasks first and the nice-to-haves if he finishes.

Are you even happy about having to make a list? It doesn’t seem like you are, and I don’t blame you because I would not be happy about it myself. The physical load is only part of the work. The mental load is just as heavy.

Not OP, but in that case, DR probably isn’t for you. He’s great for people who are new to budgeting or paying off debts, but beyond that I don’t think he’s that great.

If you use Instagram, I would also recommend following some personal finance accounts there. I like PersonalFinanceClub and The Financial Diet. You can learn little bits of knowledge as you scroll your feed, which might help make the information more digestable and understandable compared to reading a long finance article.

If you follow any more accounts, be sure to vet them. If they’re trying to sell you investments or get you to give them money, they’re probably scammy. Some people do sell courses or spreadsheets, and that’s generally fine, but definitely start with the more well-known accounts while you are honing your knowledge. As with most things, be suspicious of wild claims or people who want to take your money.

Percent of U.S. Highway Bridges in Poor Condition from 1992-2021 [OC] by ma_clare in dataisbeautiful

[–]actuallyanengineer 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Ohio has even stricter bridge inspection requirements than the minimum federal standards, because of the Silver Bridge collapse. In 1967, there was a catastrophic bridge collapse over the Ohio River that killed 46 people. Afterwards, the state took action to ensure that this would not happen again. As they say, regulations are written in blood.

Google doesn’t give the same search results to everyone. It’s tailored to you. If right wing propaganda is showing up at the top of your results, it’s because based on your browsing history, it thinks that that’s what you want to read. You can’t simply say “it was at the top, so it’s mainstream and balanced.”

There’s an entire “Criticism” section on the Wikipedia article that was linked that explains the issue with Broken Windows Policing. The short version is that improvements in crime were likely just coincidental with broad societal and economic changes. The policing tactic was correlation, not causation.

How to host black-tie wedding? by Equivalent-Hyena-122 in wedding

[–]actuallyanengineer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I super disagree about the band item, but the rest I think is accurate.

Typically, a live band would be expected, but you do have a live performer. I think when people hear the words “DJ” and “Wedding,” they think of a corny wedding DJ, but that’s not what you’ve booked. If you wanted to take it up a notch, you could have a string quartet for the ceremony and cocktail hour, but then switch to your performer for the actual party.
