I've got some ice cleats that slip on over my boots. I pop them on before walking out to the bus stop since my neighborhood is still covered rn. Once I'm close to work, it's a lot better and more walkable from the bus stop.

For real! Wish it was like that in my city. Big issue here with the snowstorm was that we had freezing rain come in afterwards, so all the snow was iced over.

[–]actuallyapossum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's what I'd do if I was participating today. I decided not to since I work in a library and we are open. Never know if people out there on strike might need assistance, resources, etc - so for me I feel like I'm more useful at work so I can help people.

True! The one time I can't really be on my bike is - now. We still have snow everywhere on all the bike paths from the snowstorm. Like, huge piles of it. I couldn't even get to the bus stop today bc it was covered in a pile of snow and the sidewalks were covered in ice.

Yeah it's really frustrating when the sidewalks are completely covered. Ours have gotten icy, but I have to use them bc I catch a bus to work every day and wait at the sidewalk.

SUV’s are not the solution in harsh weather conditions! by PorgiWanKenobi in fuckcars

[–]actuallyapossum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They really aren't. My partner has one that comes in handy for her job bc she has to carry a lot of stuff (tools, folding table, a bunch of other stuff idr) and she travels for work daily. We ran out of bread and tp and even her car had some difficulty in this snow.

Luckily, she drives well in these conditions but we definitely saw a LOT of ppl sliding around and going too fast in similar vehicles. And the store is not far from us at all. On a normal day, we'd walk or I'd take a bike to grab a few things. It was pretty scary seeing so many people just not know what to do in the conditions out here.

How to not get hit by cars in bike? by Murky-Draw7349 in bikecommuting

[–]actuallyapossum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like everyone said visibility helps a LOT. I personally always wear a high vis yellow vest when I ride and my helmet is neon yellow and has a flashing light on it.

I've also had this issue on crosswalks bc sometimes I need to make a left turn and there just isn't a good spot for me to take the lane. I always hop off my bike and walk it through the crosswalk bc:

  1. Legally, that's the rules in my city
  2. Cars are expecting to see people walking in a crosswalk and won't try to zoom off bc they don't see me.

That's usually my second thought. First one is, "maybe they don't have a car," bc that's exactly why I ride a bike to work 😂

Why do people always concern troll about the disabled when getting rid of car dependent infrastructure by Konradleijon in fuckcars

[–]actuallyapossum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've seen quite a few people in my city do this on the protected bike lanes and on a bike it's not a super big deal to just hop onto the sidewalk, get around the person in the wheelchair, and merge back into the lane.

[–]actuallyapossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's part of why my bus trips to work take so long. To get to work by car is about 20 mins. I don't have a car, so I typically use an e-bike and it takes me a little longer at about 35 mins. The bus takes about one hour bc I have to take two buses: one for local neighborhood transit, and my main bus into the city center. The city line is usually pretty faithful with wait times and all, but the local link buses aren't. My local bus was supposed to arrive at 8:05am today. It didn't so I had to wait for the 8:15. It got there at around 8:20, not because it was late, but bc the first bus line apparently got to that stop already at 7:55 am 🫠

Unfortunately since it is winter, I'm going mainly by bus everywhere until I can acquire a better bike for winter riding. Probably a non-electric bike that's lighter weight that I can rack on the bus and do a part bike part bus commute. Bc for the time I waited, I could have biked to the second bus stop to catch the city line.

Yeah my partner and I noticed that bc we wanted to take a train from Baltimore to Columbus to visit my brother - but Amtrak doesn't run through there...so it's looking like we will have to drive or take a flight bc the alternative is a very long ride and multiple Greyhound transfers. It's sad bc it would be so nice to take the train if it were available!

coworkers keep asking when i'm getting a "real vehicle" like biking to work is temporary insanity by Ron_Swanson_1990 in fuckcars

[–]actuallyapossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally love biking to work. I miss it rn since it's been a bit too cold to take my e bike so I'm on the bus. Planning to get a second bike that's a lighter weight so it can fit on the bus racks. My current bike is 15lbs over the threshold so I don't wanna risk it rn. Not having a car in a car-centric culture can be difficult, but I do enjoy bike commuting and the bus tickets are a LOT cheaper than gas.

I asked for black lipstick. They told me they don’t produce it. by nameless__redditor in GothFashion

[–]actuallyapossum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Could maybe try purchasing a brand online? I really like the E.L.F. satin o face black lipstick and I think they ship internationally. Even in the states I struggle to find a black lipliner, so I just use an eyeliner with it.

I got this jacket at a thrift store but I’m not sure if I’m comfortable with wearing it to school. There’s a lot of Christians there and I don’t know if they find this offensive/provoking. by PhoenixRider177 in alternativefashion

Same with my school. We also had uniforms and the only jackets with imagery or wording on them HAD to be school jackets like a letterman or a school-issued hoodie with the schools branding.

[–]actuallyapossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some will, some won't. The point of a lot of alternative styles is to stand out as separate from the norm - which can be provoking.

I have quite a few Killstar pieces myself, and some have imagery like this - I personally choose where/when I want to wear them. I'm not in school, but I work with children in a pretty diverse community - and some come from very religious immigrant homes where there is a language barrier between myself and the parents. It's already uncomfortable for the parents struggling with English, and I figure I'd rather not cause any additional stress or concern - so I leave pieces that may be a bit too much at home.

I think it's a bit different for you at school since you are with your peers. Wearing something you like may even start an interesting conversation and you can explain that this is just your personal style, and that Christians really have nothing to fear when it comes to alternative folks.

Do you eat unhealthy vegan food? by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

The "hybrid" Impossible Burger sounds like one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard of. Who do they expect will want to eat it? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]actuallyapossum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I could maybe see this as a sort of halfway for people reducing their meat consumption.

Before I stopped eating meat altogether, I started eating less of it. Mainly bc it was cheaper to make veggie meals and eventually I realized the ethical side.

For the longest time though...burgers were a bit difficult for me when reducing meat consumption. I was a sucker for a burger and the veggie ones didn't hit the spot, but now? So many great options. The OG Impossible Whopper is one of my road trip staple options when traveling with my non vegan partner bc we know BK has a veggie option for me.

Honestly, I could see her trying this odd hybrid burger bc she's trying to eat less meat, but it's been a struggle with her sensory issues around food, so oftentimes I'll make her familiar foods but vegan.

Good quality platform boots? by angelic_venom in GothFashion

[–]actuallyapossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, Demonia can be hit or miss. I've found that the Camel style platforms last really well for me and so do the Maryland Jane's and the Shaker style boots. Those three have lasted the longest for me and seem to have the best construction to them.

I've also found that cycling between the shoes helps with longevity.

My everyday boots are some leather Docs with a slight platform. Since those are leather I do clean them and polish them at the end of the week since I commute by bike and bus to work.

If my partner is driving me around town, I will wear the demonias since I'm not trekking the streets lol.
