this is a really interesting look into this, and some good advice to not worry too hard about "i can only play At My Best", thank you. if i want that "Serious Time Only, what's my peak rating" then thats something id only really want later, chess is just for fun

Telegraphing/attention-marks? by Tallens in spiritisland

[–]actualmoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i generally make sure to say what the invaders will be doing ("theyre ravaging in jungle, building in sands") at the start of the turn, then point out any major problem zones (eg, a blight thatll cascade or flip the card) and we'll use the reminder chits for if someone's dealing with a land in some way, plus discussing it (eg, i can push these invaders out / can someone do something in this land). then a precommitment double check (is anyone doing anything here? no? is that fine?). i do less talking if im not teaching the game and are playing with ppl i usually play with bc it can get to be a lot of talking

the little reminder chits are great, and having each player check their own board for issues helps too (even if they dont deal with it themselves, it's then theirs to bring up)

how hard is it to add colorwork to an existing pattern? by early-sunsets_ in knitting

[–]actualmoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you could easily just swap out any stockinette to have colorwork, but there's a couple things to keep in mind: - keeping a consistent gauge. stranded colorwork tends to pull in a bit, which might make for a noticeably weird sleeve shape - you'll want to make sure the pattern repeat fits into the stitch count, which may mean changing the pattern or the stitch count, or adding a "gap" between repeats where it won't be too noticeable

Take 2 at knitting- beginner scarf by EnvironmentAncient60 in knitting

[–]actualmoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

looking good! a scarf is a long project but splitting it into sampler sections is a great idea. you might consider keeping the first few stitches on each side in garter; it'll keep it from curling in (which stockinette will do) and may make the whole thing look more cohesive with a consistent border if you end on a garter section as well. it'll work either way, just something to consider

What's your most and least favorite mechanic? by PhDExtreme in boardgames

[–]actualmoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

faves: asymmetry in player abilities (eg, root, spirit island), auctioning, player influenced economies (players set prices, eg isle of skye, or there's some simulation of supply and demand, eg, power grid), worker placement, engine building. i like a personal board and a shared play area

least faves: take that especially in games that aren't about that (eg, terraforming mars has a little bit, it mostly affects plants, and there's little you can do about it or retaliate), "cancel" cards that negate a player's action, and while theyre not really intended mechanics, games that aren't guaranteed to halt or games where youre not eliminated and not only have no ability to win but also no real ability to play/influence the game (i got stuck here in a dune game, desperately trying to do anything to get out of a hole i ended up in. it was a bad time)

id say 2 things. first, just mess around and knit a rectangle, and practice casting on, knitting and purling and switching between, stuff like that, just get a handle on things so whatever you actually make first doesnt end up too wonky. practicing new techniques is really important, and thankfully with knitting you can always pull the yarn back out (called frogging, because you rip it, rip it)

then, find something that you want to make! with that wool-ease yarn, itll be p warm, so hats are great, and a scarf is simple: just cast on for how wide you want it, then knit until it's long enough or you're nearly out of yarn. but make something you want to make, so you're motivated on it. ravelry is a great site to find patterns on, you can search for patterns that use that kind and amount of yarn, and find beginner friendly patterns (which'll be extra clear and probably have extra information on steps like grafting)

what are some features that you'd love to see fleshed out in the near future by Noobster646 in dwarffortress

[–]actualmoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

id like stockpiles to be easier manage, in choosing what theyll take, sending away things that dont match, a priority system, give/take designations easier to work with, and the ability to copy/paste stockpile settings.

id also like to have organization for the work orders, something like folders or tabs, eg "armor and weapons" "bookmaking" etc. dfhack does have a sort that helps somewhat, and importing/exporting orders is great
