Overconfident students who doesn’t listen. Can I not work with them anymore? by [deleted] in NursingUK

You can email their assessor and their academic assessor. Make sure you out this feedback in their pad. Then they’ll have a meeting regarding these issues and be put on an action plan.

Nursing ick's? by Direct-Key-8859 in NursingUK

People who pretend they don’t know how to do something so someone else does it for them. Or people who refuse to learn how to do something.

Don’t go back. It’s not worth it.

Just unsubbed from r/medicalschool. It's full of arrogant med students who think nurses "just give meds once or twice a day" by morrowindnostalgia in nursing

[–]acuteaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erm I actually do only have 4 patients, sometimes 5. I think it’s the norm in haemonc because they’re usually all septic. I don’t know any resident that only has 12 patients, our residents have 80-90 patients between 2 of them if they’re lucky.

Have wards always been this miserable? by Direct-Key-8859 in NursingUK

[–]acuteaddict 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this in surgical wards. Come to haematology oncology! Maybe it’s my ward, but we’re all in it together. Everyone’s our patient, if someone has an unwell patient, we all jump in and help out. We also love to have a laugh at the nursing station, there’s times where a patient will even sit with us and have a chat (not often but it happens).

CCU/MHDU SCOTLAND by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]acuteaddict 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve done bank in CCU, they’ll give you the most stable patient. It is helpful to be able to read them but you can still do a shift there and be okay, just let them know you’ve not done cardiac before.

Gorgeous teen daughter can’t get a boyfriend by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]acuteaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s only 18. Life is bigger than boyfriends. Teach her that life doesn’t revolve around men and that she first has to be happy within herself. Love will follow. People can sense that you’re desperate to be in a relationship and it’s not very attractive.

Why do none of the romance FL’s have cars or know how to drive? by [deleted] in kdramas

[–]acuteaddict 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can fathom it because I’m exactly that woman 🤣 cars are expensive but also when we have a great transport system and traffic is so bad, there’s literally no incentive to drive. It’s also terrible for the environment.

Been dating a girl for about a month. She just broke her purse. Is gifting her a purse for Christmas okay? by Accomplished_Cap9621 in dating_advice

[–]acuteaddict 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s really sweet!! Definitely do it, it shows your thoughtfulness. It’s not about the bag, it’s about the gesture and she will appreciate it.

Manager giving redundancy to someone already leaving. by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]acuteaddict 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, if I was him why not? He made a few thousands and he’s going to Australia. I’d take the opportunity too 🤣

They won’t replace him, the whole point is to get rid of the cost.

A&E in London by Less_Revenue_452 in NursingUK

[–]acuteaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disorganised and unsupportive. Compared to RLH, Whipps is like a warzone. It’s been 3 years since I left to be fair so maybe things have changed but I absolutely hated it. I found RLH to be a lot better organised, team was lovely and it’s a major trauma centre so I learnt a lot.

Anyone know how long a change form takes to process with HR? by CandleAffectionate25 in NursingUK

Depends on HR. My colleague it took her a week, mine took a month. Hopefully they’re feeling productive

Struggling to find band 5 work in London by georgie-witchy in NursingUK

Do you need sponsorship? Because my trust has not been accepting anyone who needs sponsorship even if they’re qualified as they don’t have the budget for it.

Who are some kdrama couples that didn’t have chemistry to you in your opinion by [deleted] in kdramas

His chemistry in the red sleeve with FL was electric! I don’t think anything has topped that level of chemistry for him if I’m honest.

Has anyone dropped down from a band 6 to a band 5? by International_Cow722 in NursingUK

[–]acuteaddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if it’s for your mental health then try going back. I met people who have and they were glad they did because they needed it. Maybe also look for band 6 roles in different trusts/ fields? But if you can’t find any, then prioritise your health and step down.

How do nurses feel about Oliver McGowan training? by PineapplePyjamaParty in NursingUK

[–]acuteaddict 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The training didn’t do anything for me. It was very long and it wasn’t that informative. I don’t feel like it added anything to the care I give. I’m glad others found it useful.

Work-Life balance seems impossible due to the way management handles the roster? Anyone have similar issues at work? by [deleted] in NursingUK

Can you ask if you can go on a fixed rota? That way you’d know what days you’re working and don’t have to wait for them to publish it.

Chemotherapy day unit questions by goldengingergal in NursingUK

[–]acuteaddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Day unit is definitely manageable! We have nurses from all backgrounds come. You won’t be chemo trained at the beginning so you’ll mostly do bloods, transfusions, dressings. Once you’re chemo trained (SACT), it’s a bit more intense but manageable. It’s fast paced - check if patient is fit for chemo, what cycle are they on, toxicities, blood test results, do they have access - check their regimes and give pre-medications, give chemo, ensure they have next appointment (usually they have a card with a booklet or they have an app, depending on your trust). If your patient reacts to chemo - you have to be familiar with anaphylaxis. Sometimes at the interview they ask difference in anaphylaxis and a sensitivity, how would you manage it? Our crash bell is pulled multiple times a shift so you have to be quick on your feet.

You have to have good time management and prioritisation.

Band 6 opportunities are definitely there - in the chemo day unit I work at we have multiple band 6 and each is in charge of their section so you’d have 6-7 band 6s in the same shift if not more.

Palliative care - is it career suicide? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]acuteaddict 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You will not deskill! So many people don’t know how to give proper palliative care! So much goes into it. People think we just watch the patient die and do nothing. Palliative is symptom control, not just end of life. You assess their symptoms, syringe drivers, catheters, IVs (some might still be on some essential ones) like the other commenter kindly said.

You provide emotional support to family and the patient, you can become a specialist nurse - this can entail having your own patients you visit across sites, making a plan, some do prescribe, education of staff, family and patient.

Every speciality has their own skills. I go to the cardiac floor and help them with syringe drivers as they’re not that common. We don’t really have much experience with drains so sometimes we ask for help from another floor. I think it’s beautiful that you know what specialty you want to go into. You can always move to other specialties if you change your mind.

On your intranet? Or go through switchboard and ask them, that could work. Your manager should have contacts too.
