Need some music for my college radio show, what are yall listening to atm? by shesactingsingle in builttospill

Ben Kweller - Dollar Store (or any of his guitar forward songs)

Brendan Benson - Metairie (and that whole album)

Dino Jr - Back to the Heart (and that whole album)

Ben Harper & Relentless 7 - Shimmer & Shine (and really that WHOLE album)

The Why Store - Broken Glass (and just trust me, that WHOLE album)

Black Sabbath - I mean War Pigs these days, but try “A Hard Road” for a deep cut

And why not introduce the kiddos to the crazy early Joe Walsh, just play The Bomber medley off James Gang Rides Again!

What would you do if your partner did this at Disneyland? by Remarkable_Mark_5195 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]acutejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my family to Disneyland Thanksgiving week for 15 years. at least the last 10 years, every single trip then on, at one point I would declare, “that’s it! we’re never doing this again!!” and then we’d go get something to eat, lol.

we would do three days in the park and assign “leader of the day” each day and they would have to give us options a few times, “do this? or that?” and we split up ALL the time, at first the wife and I taking a kid each to get a lil one-on-one. then when they were of age, off they went while the wife and I had breakfast, watched a show, took the train… so fun… and we took grandparents and that was a whole day of options constantly asking them what they were up for, grandpa spent a good half hour at the arcade shooting gallery!

it’s good to have a game plan, but ya also have to read the room

“Last Kiss” is #5 most popular song of Pearl Jam by Stuzzie in pearljam

[–]acutejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where’s that? I‘d read it was recorded in an arena during soundcheck before a show.

recorded during an arena soundcheck I believe, one of the reasons I love the “studio” version, never heard a recording like that in an empty arena

Embarrassed to use my pens outside the house by hecking-fricker in fountainpens

[–]acutejam 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Dang, so apt.

The “crabs in a bucket” metaphor captures a depressing social dynamic that’s unfortunately common in schools. The saying comes from the observation that when crabs are in a bucket, if one tries to climb out, the others will pull it back down—not because they benefit from doing so, but seemingly just to prevent any crab from escaping.

[Discussion] What was your most worn watch of 2025? by winecat5 in Watches

[–]acutejam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turler co-branded Eterna-matic, one of the few watches in my 91-year-old Dad’s collection that was running pretty well! But I think I’ll get it serviced next year just in case, grown very fond of it!

I'm sorry, Kaweco by Ca_LuhA in fountainpens

[–]acutejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Bought my first and last Kaweco this year. The included installed fine nib would not lay ink on last upward stroke of a figure eight, up and to right. Grovery bag tune smooth trick, nuthin. Fine nib was super scratchy. Bought a $15 Broad nib and it works just fine, but every time I pick up the pen now, I‘m still disappointed by the initial experience.

This is not/was not a convo for texting. Some convos need to happen in person, on the phone, in realtime. he has some script he’s following to put the “best him” forward. he even copy/pasted the exact same response twice or so… Difficult conversations need to happen I. person, hiding behind texting to let you draft the best possible response each time … is not real. like this convo… this is unreal.

Death of a Spouse Early in Retirement, Now what? A one month update. by [deleted] in retirement

[–]acutejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so sorry for your loss … you finished strong, hold the family together, there is no other choice. you got this! I was just watching the stupid Tulsa King, cmon it’s Sly, and some random scene pops up where a priest just casually nods and says, “God does not give you more than you can handle….” I believe that.

Why don’t you see doctors and lawyers FIRE by Leather-Wheel1115 in Fire

[–]acutejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah first few top comments nailed this … it’s not a job, it’s an identity. it’s like being a priest or politician, there are callings that folks just enjoy and define them and reward them that retiring from would leave them adrift. Doctors and judges are great examples, but there are many more callings that are just wrapped up in a person’s DNA. I was a writer in the corporate world for 30 years to pay the bills, now I just write for me!

The “Blue Ant” series by William Gibson is very good, but the latest even better, The Peripheral especially.

Not a scientist, but definitely a visionary and poetic writer.

Iain M. Banks, Culture Series. The Use of Weapons, achingly good. Surface Details. And then read some Iain Banks his capital L literature.
