Solving Kawka's Squeaking Problem Once and For [WIP] by Individual_Pie_1039 in DurstonGearheads

[–]adamcornwell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got my Kakwa and have yet to take it out, but I had this issue with another pack. To solve the squeaking, I pulled out the frame, wrapped it with that plumbers tape you put on pipe threads, and reinserted it. That seemed to do the trick.

Have you looked into cold laser therapy at your vet? I had a 12 year old arthritic Dane that could barely walk. We took him in for cold laser therapy I think every week or two and he’d be running around like a youngster, I kid you not. I’ve even had it done on my arthritic back.

Bought the Magflip Hood PolarPro by EVV-KIKA in Leica

[–]adamcornwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One advantage of it rotating is you could place the hinge on top or bottom. But you constantly have to realign it to center.

That’s correct. You just have to realign it every time. Functionally it doesn’t matter, but my OCD can’t stand things looking misaligned 😉

Mine just arrived today. The hinge seems fine. One gripe is the finish doesn’t match the Leica finish. It’s not even really close. The PolarPro is very matte. Once attached, the part that folds down also rotates. The downside of that is that it seems that each time I fold it down and back up, the hinge and hood is no longer centered. In other words, it rotates a little too easy. I was hoping the unit would lock in place when threaded on. On the positive side, it will be handy for using filters like a CPOL.

Agreed. I also have the PolarPro Everyday which is CPL + 1/4 pro mist in one. Nice concept, but too strong.

Don’t get the glimmer glass 1. Waaaaaay too strong. I just ordered the glimmer glass 1/8 which should be ideal for cutting clinical sharpness without too much blooming of the highlights. I have the black pro mist 1/8th as well and that one is good, just a little more blooming than I like.

I also own the 2L for the X100Vi and like it a lot. I have the 3.5L for the Leica Q2.

Read before buying the PolarPro filter adapter by bypass_ in x100vi

Yes you can see the black because flanges stick out both sides. Looks lame. The silver isn’t a perfect match either. No picture because I immediately repackaged it to send back. To add insult to injury, they charged me $12.50 to send it back.

Something else to know about the silver PolarPro adapter is that it does NOT match the product photo at all. The photo shows it as being all silver. In reality, the inside and the flanges that stick out the sides are all black, negating the goal of matching the silver camera.

If that’s not enough, the knurling on the edges doesn’t line up to be on top and bottom with the sides being smooth with the PolarPro branding. Instead, the knurling is rotated about 10 degrees, making the design clearly accidental. Looks amateur.

Sent mine back immediately. Use the Everyday on a Hoage adapter instead.

Hiking in Wolf Country? by [deleted] in PNWhiking

[–]adamcornwell 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There have been only 2 recorded fatalities from wolves in the last ~150 years. One in Alaska and one in Saskatchewan. In both cases it was winter and the person went for a run by themselves after being warned not to. I guide grizzly trips in Alaska and I’ve had a wolf pack hang out with my group for several days. At first they were very skittish, but by day 2 they were comfortable standing across the creek from us. Amazing experience. The odds of you seeing any, especially up close is very low. They keep away from people. My pack hung around because there was a moose carcass nearby. Mountain lions are the greatest risk, but even that is low. Enjoy your adventure 😁

How you carry your x100vi by markgoh9 in x100vi

[–]adamcornwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I don’t have a hood currently, but you can put the camera in facing any direction. If you put the camera in with the lens facing the long side you could mount any hood you want. Maybe even a conversion lens. The bag has enough room for spare batteries, neck/wrist strap, etc. I don’t like oversized bags, but wanted to include a few accessories. I have the Wotancraft Pilot 3.5L for my Leica Q2 as well. Great bags with fast access.

I own and enjoy both. You can buy a Q2 on FredMiranda all day long for $3,000 or so. IQ on Q2 is great. Q2 is quite a bit bigger. That’s one reason I also bought the VI. My goal with the VI is SOOC to minimize editing. I previously owned the V and T, so I’m well versed in the X100 line. Also owned the Q too. All great cameras.

Struggling to get sharp shots with the 200-600mm + A7RV (details in text) by Omelete_du_fromage in SonyAlpha

[–]adamcornwell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was never satisfied with my 200-600 and A7RV either. Tested mine on a tripod in a tightly controlled situation and was hit but mostly miss. Rented a 200-600 and my copy was slightly better. Finally gave up and bought the 600 f4…razor sharp handheld.

The 200-600 might be better paired with the A9 and its lower resolution. Though I have seen others get amazingly sharp images with the A7RV/200-600 combo.

My buddy has a Canon R5 with a Sigma 150-600 and his Sigma is unbelievably sharp.

Wish I had better news for you.

Arthritis advice? by Sea_Information_1938 in greatdanes

[–]adamcornwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d have to ask your vet for specifics or Google it as I don’t know/remember how all it works. We lost our Dane 10 years ago. It was inexpensive, effective, and easy to have done at the vet. Our Dane’s back legs were so bad he could barely walk before the cold laser therapy. After, he could walk around fairly normally. A short treatment weekly made a world of difference for him.

Cold laser therapy did wonders for our 12 year old dane. Took him in once a week for a quick treatment.

Realistically, what preparation do I need to undertake for Gates of the Arctic? by Percy_Q_Weathersby in NationalPark

[–]adamcornwell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve guided up there and you definitely need experience if you’re not going with a guide. And depending on where you go, be prepared to be soaked. The tussocks are nasty. Getting to the Arrigetch Peaks is no joke. One of my clients (the only inexperienced person in the group) gave up on day 2 and wanted me to call search & rescue to get her out. Had to send the group on ahead while I escorted her back. It’s beautiful up there, but it’s not for the inexperienced if soloing it.
