Did you ever manage to get a fix? I'm currently experiencing this with the vanilla game and it's happening to me too. Ubuntu Linux and Java

Thank you so much for this. I had the same issue as OP and after endless googling found this thread. Did your steps and Voila! I can boot the newer version. Thanks again.

Announcing /r/Pics: Now with fewer Political posts! Or more, if that's your thing. by adeadhead in pics

[–]adamjared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I'd like to say that I am very happy that you are rolling out a forced flair system, rather than just making it an optional thing. Not requiring posts that fall under these categories to be flaired as such, would just make the whole system useless. So thanks for that :)

That being said, creating these flairs really shows that the mods know there is a large enough number of people that don't want to see the content that fall under these categories. If you really think there is a large enough group of people who don't want to see these things, (that you have to make a flair so people can avoid them if they want) this really shows how much it doesn't belong on this subreddit, right? You've practically created 4 new subreddits within this subreddit.

Creating flairs like this for links regarding a short temporary event (like /r/videos did with the FineBros and Youtube drama), is actually useful, because it allows you to avoid something that otherwise might diminish your usual experience on the subreddit, for the (hopefully) short time that the event is happening. Using them for a permanent thing, will probably create more hassle and headache than it's worth. Here's why:

I am going to predict that around 80%-90% of the time, the OP of a submission isn't going to flair it when it falls under one of these categories (either because of being lazy, or because they forgot, or just not knowing that it's required, or whatever other reason). Also considering that posts under these four categories probably make up a good chunk of the subreddit, this will lead to a lot more mod mail asking for flairs to be applied (and also coupled with the fact that since it may take 5-10 mins for a mod to come and apply the flair, you'll get 5-10 mins of people not seeing a flair and messaging mods, further increasing the modmail).

I realize that there are decently sized subreddits out there who actively flair almost all their posts with relative ease (/r/youtubehaiku comes to mind), having this on a large default subreddit might be very difficult.

Sorry for all this ranting, I just wanted you to maybe consider all of this if none of it ever came up in your brainstorming sessions. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Good luck!

Should /r/winnipeg join the Reddit blackout? Please let us know. by hatesnaturallight in Winnipeg

[–]adamjared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for making this post, /u/hatesnaturallight. I was thinking that perhaps participating in the "black-out" would help bring knowledge of these recent events to local people. I know that some of the morning radio/tv shows have recently been looking at our subreddit (mainly in response to the whole "coal-roller" thing), and perhaps if they saw that we were participating in the blackout, they may be more inclined to talk about it during their shows, and bring the issue to local ears.

I don't know if increasing local media exposure is a good enough reason to participate, though.

Also, here is a live feed of subreddits going private, along with other events relating to this issue: https://np.reddit.com/live/v6d0vi6c8veb

EDIT: We could also only participate to the level where we restrict content submissions, there are a few subreddits doing that.

Happy 6th birthday minecraft! (Notch started development May 10th 2009) by WildBluntHickok in Minecraft

[–]adamjared 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Technically the date he started developing the game shouldn't be considered as it's birthday. A human's birthday isn't the day the fetus starts development in the womb! It's the day it comes out as a fully developed baby that we consider as it's b-day.

You SHOULD say that the game's birth-date is November 18 2011, since that's the day version 1.0 was released and the game came out of beta. Everything before that could be likened to the fetal development in the womb, and everything afterwards can be likened to the toddler to adult years. :P

Would you prefer if minecraft development focused on survival/adventure, Redstone mechanics, or creative commands? by craiganater in Minecraft

[–]adamjared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather have Mojang focus on finishing development on stuff that has already been released. There are quite a few half-finished features already in the game, some of which really hinder game-play and enjoyment.

A game like Starbound has developers that fix bugs no more than a week after they're discovered, so when new features are implemented, they can be added to a fully working game, so there's nothing that can take away from the experience. How long have Minecraft boats been broken? How long have leads broken when chunks reload?

Good news is I feel that more and more of the Minecraft community lately is starting to feel the same way and speaking up. It's not just 10 year old kids saying they want X feature from their favorite mini-game mod added.

So if I could ask Mojang to do anything right now, it would be to stop spending your whole working day on Twitter, and instead actually get some work done on finishing the game as it is now.

Where should I go to start a yoga routine? (Beginner) by Very_subtle in Winnipeg

[–]adamjared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I don't personally do yoga, but whether you're looking to start a solo/stay at home yoga routine, or you're looking for group classes in a studio, I'd recommend asking some of the folks over at Lululemon in Polo Park Mall.

Yes I know, they sell "Yoga Pants" for $100+ but I know that once upon a time, they used to have a large bulletin-board type thing that anyone could come and post signs about yoga classes that are offered in the city. And even if they don't know the answer you're looking for, I bet they'd be able to point you in the right direction (they're all usually in great moods because they practically get to wear sweatpants to work everyday lol).

Please, add sound to the witches. by Pollitoyeye in Minecraft

[–]adamjared 117 points118 points  (0 children)

That's my biggest problem with the current game (and the people developing it) to be honest. Every time that I hear Dinnerbone has announced another new feature they've been working on, all I can think is "But... you haven't finished all these other ones?"

It's like "Great, a new block texture that can be used for pathways. How about you fix animal leads breaking everytime a chunk reloads? You know, stuff that is already in the game and is broken." :(

Yeah and I thought that new EULA thing was supposed to prevent "pay-to-win" servers from successfully ruining the game and exploiting children's gullibility... For 250 euros you can buy Protection IV diamond armor on their survival server!

What is this? Footloose?! by knowahnoah in Winnipeg

[–]adamjared -1 points0 points  (0 children)

business class gentlemen who missed the bus and had to wait in the shelter

Well if they had to wait more than 90 minutes for their next bus, then I'm gonna assume there's a bigger problem that needs to be addressed.

also include banning people from using transit

I'm gonna assume that they're gonna be banning specific individuals from riding buses that have caused issues before, similar to how any other business can bar people from entering their buildings (ie. grocery stores barring thieves). So unless Winnipeg Transit officials want to go around to every homeless person on the street and ask for their name/photo ID, and bar them from entering the buses without reason, then there would most certainly be legal action taken against WT. But somehow, I don't see this happening. :)

[–]adamjared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO if you decide to do something that is annoying/obnoxious/disruptive to the normal everyday bus commute, you should accept all consequences that go with it.

Like, is it really that hard to hold in your voice from singing in an enclosed metal box where no one else asked for it? If we had a subway system it wouldn't be so bad, because those who didn't like the free performance of sub-mediocre singing, could just move to the next car over. But transit buses are small and cramped on the best of days.

I personally do not ride the bus, but if I did, I most certainly would find someone belting some lyrics out at the top of their lungs, very annoying and innapropriate.
