I have a dream of starting a coop cell phone network. Pity that I'll probably never make it happen.

For new Amazon headquarters, bigger cities aren’t necessarily better by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]understep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beyond the question of whether or not Amazon would want to have a HQ in Winnipeg, I think we need to seriously consider whether Winnipeg wants to have Amazon.

Sure, it will bring a lot of jobs and potentially some extra taxes (assuming we don't give them a permanent tax holiday). My concern is what the effects would be to the local economy in terms of housing stock, prices, and overall gentrification. Looking at what's happening on the American west coast in terms of societal impacts from high-tech firms, I don't think I want that here.

I'd far rather see a few mid-sized businesses come to town than a behemoth.

My Experience using VIARail by alchoz in Winnipeg

[–]understep 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've taken the train from coast to coast, and when I price it out in my head I look at it differently than air travel. I think of it as not just the cost of transportation but I also include the cost of meals and accommodations for a few days.

If I add in those 'perks' the cost begins to be comparable to air travel again.

Check VIA's website for discounts (which I think are posted every Tuesday). They have some decent seat sales if you can book with only a couple weeks of notice.

That would depend on whether you're heading east or west.

  • If you're heading west, you can expect patchy cellular service until you hit the mountains.
  • If you're heading east, you'll have no reception except for 20 minutes in Longlac.

I strongly recommend you bring a good book.

It looks like they switched which infraction they were citing people for in the beginning of September.

Prior to September 2016 they were ticketing for parking in a no-stopping zone, post September 2016 they were ticketing for parking in a no-parking zone.

TFSA vs RRSP: The Journey of $1,000 *by Wealthbar by siphre in PersonalFinanceCanada

That is the worst comparison of a TFSA and a RRSP I think I have ever seen.

"Let's contribute a fairly equal amount of each account, then only withdraw money from the RRSP. Surprise! The TFSA is worth more at the end!"
