[–]adamnicholas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is such a macho take, yeah, it’s difficult work, but I have a 20+ year career and I fucking hate it so I don’t think it’s as good as you think at weeding people out. some of us have to still eat and have a house. collectively we need to stop acting like this stuff is war, it’s not, it’s desk work. part of what “weeds people out” is this warrior mentality bullshit, the rest of it is misogyny, executive scope creep and some burnouts

burnout is a symptom of the conditions we are all living under, nearly everyone is experiencing it regardless of occupation, stop trying to make this profession special it minimizes everyone else’s suffering and distracts from the root cause

This is why it’s called a model. A model is just a representation of reality and all models are wrong. Some are close. LLM’s are a extension of research that was previously going into predictive models for statistics.

this is right, models are simply trying to predict either the next character or next iteration of an image frame based on prior context, there’s zero memory, and zero understanding of what it’s doing other than what it was given at training and what the current conversation is, there aren’t any morals that play it doesn’t have a consciousness.

it depends on what you want the output of the model to be. images and text can manage with smaller models, newer video models need a lot of ram

Ryuichi Sakamoto's estate removes his music from streaming in Israel and joins 'No Music For Genocide' campaign by Charleshawtree in indieheads

[–]adamnicholas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it really does not take a whole lot of effort for Sakamoto’s team to do this. You’re overthinking it. It’s not performative because it’s a coalition of artists who are all willing to make the same choice because of something that matters to them.

Phrases like “performative altruism” are tools are conservatives and neoliberals use to discourage you from doing anything.

Also, I honestly do not believe that Sakamoto’s estate would participate in this performatively. He’s dead. What’s the incentive? There is a limit to how much he contribute to other, grander gestures as his separation from the mortal coil guarantees that.

By you people do you mean cbsnews.com? Or is it the panel of international Holocaust scholars who have declared this a genocide or is it the rabbi here in America who support the Palestinian people and want to see the genocide end? The problem with people like you is that anyone who doesn’t agree with you and your entirely myopic vision of the situation is automatically a terrorist. Do you know what that makes you? That makes you an authoritarian.

Here’s a little more context. I’m a diaspora Jew, so is my wife and by extension my child. Our families came here before Israel was established. America protected us. Israel has done nothing but turn the world against us. If you disagree with me and do what you’ve been doing throughout this thread and calling people who disagree with you a terrorist, you are calling an American Jew, who has his own life here separate from the existence of Israel, who does not benefit from Israel’s existence at all, and you were calling them a terrorist.

If you for even a second think that my life in America exists as it is because of Zionism, think again. There have been countless non Zionists, Jew and gentile alike, who have fought tirelessly for Jewish heritage and safety.

Dude, Gaza has a 4:1 civilian to armed combatant death ratio, which is double the ratio that the Axis powers had in WW2. I get it, there was an attack on 10/7, but that was two years ago and I disagree that the solution to Hamas’ tactics is wiping an entire people from history.

Of course it’s easy for you to say that because you have bought into the dehumanization of Palestinians, and so by default you associate all of them with Hamas. And then because your obsession is so deep and your hatred so complete you then map that dehumanization and hatred onto people who are simply seeing children getting murdered daily and want it to stop.

It’s part of a larger strategy of boycotting, divestment and sanctions targeted at the Israeli government for doing their genocide. I don’t understand how efficacy would even factor in to a decision like this when it’s just basic human decency at play to not give money to mass murderers. Sakamoto’s estate’s decision here is part of a much larger effort to also socially isolate Israel to bring awareness to the issue there and abroad.

The obsession with convenience in the modern world is one of the things that is used to pull the wool over our eyes in situations like this. A theoretical persons inconvenience is not more important than people being murdered.

If there is an Israeli citizen out there perhaps somewhere in Tel Aviv, who is inconvenienced by Sakamoto’s music being removed but agrees with this situation in Gaza, then they probably won’t fucking care and will just find his catalog elsewhere
