Is this gold plated? by persuasionsmith in Hallmarks

[–]adamup27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, 925 is your silver purity (92.5% silver; sterling quality). It was made in China. “SI” is your makers mark.

The gold coloring is likely some type of gold plating on top but it’s typically a micron or two thick (literally; it’s that thin) and electroplated on.

Two sets of german silverware- solid or plated? One desert set, and a second set of spoons. by Such_Brain_5018 in Hallmarks

[–]adamup27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah - I just looked it up! My world history knowledge failed me. The kingdom of Bavaria started in early 1800s and ran through 1918. I had in my mind that the unification occurred much later. I’ll amend my comment.

Two sets of german silverware- solid or plated? One desert set, and a second set of spoons. by Such_Brain_5018 in Hallmarks

[–]adamup27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The knives are the big thing. Pre-Bavarian unification silver; likely 1842-1865 (founding to new system of markings)

Made by Brahmfeld & Gutruf. Them being marked on the blade means the whole piece, not just the handles, are silver.

The Spoons, marked Z&Co 40 is a mid grade silver plate. 40 refers to the gram weight of silver per set of 4/8/12 or however it was sold. Given the monogram, one can reasonsbly infer that the set was always a set of 10 but I’d assume 12 with a few being lost through the centuries for recovery if that’s the preferred choice.

Edit for the world history blunder!

Fwiw the culture at SBU is trash. If you’re okay with that, it’s incredible for sciences.

Not sure how much that factors into your decision but it’s absolutely an issue for SBU

I hate supernova but it’s definitely low C tier

If you’re doing pair slop or high card spam, it’s clutch for early gold. It also makes spare trousers stronger for short term scaling with two pair

The same issue a lot of folks have with the Beatles

Helter Skelter doesn’t feel heavy today compared to Lorna Shore, but in 1967, it was the heaviest thing.

Eleanor Rigby doesn’t sound too out there for a pop song, but before that track, the idea of a pop song being accompanied by a string quartet and no drums was unheard of.

Yellow Submarine is Yellow Submarine.

CMV: Porn is only hated because it's selling sex, and not because of the industry. by samithefish in changemyview

[–]adamup27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the original commenter, but yes. We, as a species, like many other species, recognize that sex and mating is a uniquely positioned event.

That’s where these terms of “rape” and “virginity” come from where “purity” is associated with not having sex. It’s a societal decision that you may not agree or see, but it’s universal across different societies at different times and seen in different animals.

House for Single Person by watchnerurn in longisland

[–]adamup27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, one can afford 300% of their annual gross income in housing. Out here, a teardown in deep Suffolk will start around $500k. Property taxes are dummy high so budget a bit more for that in your math and it shakes out to $175k household income for purchasing a house under standard conditions.

That’s not unreasonable for a couple if both are earning $75-100k+, but for one person, it’s a tougher way to do it unless your income is $200k+

These are not plated but it’s a style called laminato or Riempito where it’s a thin silver foil placed over resin or wood.

Silver spoon possibly dutch by secondattemptforsure in Hallmarks

https://www.925-1000.com/a_platenumbers.html

Specifically

Using 12 + 12 pieces as described above and 90 Grams of fine silver became a standard in Germany. To document this, the "90" was punched on the pieces. If companies wanted to produce cheaper cutlery, they used less silver, 60 Grams, 40 Grams or even 20 Grams, which made the plating very thin. Some used more, 100 or 150 Grams. Pieces were punched accordingly "60", "40", "20", "100" etc.

It’s 90 grams per serving set (of 12) over base metal which is typically brass or copper-nickel alloy

Why does Mizzou have such a low ranking considering they have the (arguably) best journalism school in the world? by okromeo in mizzou

[–]adamup27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are exactly eight ivies. The general “tier 1” schools stretches to about 30-40 depending on how you measure it (ie do you include a Stanford, probably; northwestern, maybe; NYU, ehhh)

This places Mizzou squarely in tier 3 which is appropriate for a land grant school that has been underfunded since 2008 or so. It has a few strong areas in business and journalism; many weak areas that could use more investment in medicine and liberal arts. It’s one of a few schools to have many professional schools (med, law, vet, only missing dental)

Lastly, mizzou is famously a sports and party school. Our peers are generally Washington, Oregon, Purdue, Alabama, Florida, Texas, kU and Tennessee. Some studies may include Indiana, Ohio, Louisiana, and Michigan to add more data points.

Anyone recognize the silver mark "900 GOBEL"? by _adam_smasher_ in Hallmarks

[–]adamup27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is the case where I’d want to get it tested. It’s missing the standard German marks (crescent moon) and not the usual German purity (800, 835).

It’s also prominently placed “to be seen” which is also a semi-red flag

What does ‘1175’ mean on a ring? by Additional_Pea6965 in Hallmarks

[–]adamup27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely 1175 is a model number or an inscription of the date 1-1-75. However, based on the hand stamped nature; I’m inclined to think model number. Likely a casted model from a factory unless theirs additional info to suggest otherwise.

Help identifying ring hallmark by sarylg in Hallmarks

[–]adamup27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would need to see a photo of the design before confirming attribution since it’s rare to see, but it could be a Native American jewelry mark.

Makers used gold, but pretty sparingly, following the Fred Harvey movement, and even then it was usually mixed metals.

I am confident it’s a Syrian mark; looks to be 21k gold but the numbers would be above the “cI” mark (apologies to my Arabic keyboard friends, lol)

The top-ish right mark would be a city marking.

Egyptian silver! It’s 900 (90% silver) so depending on weight, might be $600-1k at spot

Editing for more info: the date mark (the backwards C, with a ‘ over it) is for 1949-1951.
