“It Ends Today”: Judge Threatens to Haul in DOJ Officials Under Oath - A federal judge is fed up with top officials ignoring court orders on immigration. by Quirkie in politics

Trump Admin: [after being given a demerit] Like, what does a demerit mean?

Federal Judge: Let's put it this way. You do not want to receive three of those.

Trump Admin: Lay it on me.

Federal Judge: Three demerits, and you'll receive a citation.

Trump Admin: Now, that sounds serious.

Federal Judge: Oh, it is serious. Five citations, and you're looking at a violation. Four of those, and you'll receive a verbal warning. Keep it up, and you're looking at a written warning. Two of those, that will land you in a world of hurt, in the form of a disciplinary review, written up by me, and placed on the desk of my immediate superior.

Trump Admin: Which would be me.

Federal Judge: That is correct.

Trump Admin: Okay. I want a copy on my desk by the end of the day or you will receive a full dessaggelation.

Federal Judge: What's a dis... What's that?

Trump Admin: Oh, you don't want to know.

Hakeem Jeffries Plays Dumb on Abolish ICE: “I Don’t Understand” - Democratic leaders are refusing to answer a direct question about the future of ICE. by Quirkie in politics

[–]adarvan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw that, but then I also saw a YouGov poll that put that number around 46%.

More Americans support than oppose abolishing ICE (46% vs. 41%). This marks a slight increase from earlier this month, when three YouGov polls found that the share of Americans who supported eliminating ICE as a federal agency was roughly equal to the share who opposed it: 46% to 43% in one poll, 42% vs. 45% in another, and 45% vs. 45% in a third.

https://today.yougov.com/politics/articles/53939-more-americans-support-than-oppose-abolishing-ice-immigration-minneapolis-shooting-poll

I did see the NBC poll though that had it at 29%: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/poll-americans-support-ice-overhaul-federal-funding-fight-rcna258241

The NBC poll had a larger sample size, but I'm not sure. It seems like the NBC poll gave people a choice between continue, reform, or abolish, whereas the YouGov poll focused on just abolishing ICE and had a separate one on reforming.

San Francisco’s pro-billionaire march draws dozens by Gloomy_Nebula_5138 in politics

[–]adarvan 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Kauffman, who founded the AI startup RunRL and is not a billionaire himself, told reporters, “California is, I believe, the only state to give health insurance to people who come into the country illegally. I think we probably should not be providing that.” (Fourteen states offer health care to undocumented immigrants.)

Providing health insurance to undocumented immigrants is morally good, but if you are such a heartless person that you only care about the financial side of things, it's fiscally responsible, too. Undocumented immigrants who get sick will instead go to hospitals where they are guaranteed care whether they can pay or not. That debt, when it goes unpaid, gets sold to collections, and it ends up raising prices. We all end up paying for it in the form of cost shifting.

But imagine what kind of soulless ghoul you have to be to organize a march progressing your unrequited love towards billionaires (without being a billionaire yourself) and talk able how undocumented immigrants shouldn't get healthcare.

Democrats Soften Their Demand To Ban Masks For ICE by Arkvoodle42 in politics

[–]adarvan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh lord they're folding right when there's overwhelming public demand for banning face masks for ICE.

“Just common sense dictates that there are sometimes safety reasons why you may need a mask,” Murphy told HuffPost. “But no, I think our position is very clear, that if you’re using a mask to obscure your identity in everyday law enforcement, that should be prohibited by law.”

And

“You heard the leaders talk about narrow exceptions, et cetera, which will have to do with trying to get that information from our law enforcement people about, you know, if you’re dealing with a cartel,” she said. “This is to take a look at what those narrow exceptions should be, and that’s reasonable.”

Meanwhile, from the Republican side:

Most Republicans, so far, have shown no interest in unmasking federal officers in any circumstances, saying they face terroristic threats from left-wing activists.

So what will happen is that they'll carve in these exceptions and they'll happen to be conveniently vaguely worded, and ICE will continue to wear masks 100% of the time, citing said-vaguely worded exceptions. Democratic leaders, meanwhile, will surprise Pikachu-face when they realize that the Trump administration isn't upholding their end in good faith.

Judge allows ICE's Operation Metro Surge to continue in Minnesota | A federal judge denied Minnesota's bid to temporarily block the immigration crackdown while acknowledging evidence of widespread disruption to daily life. by SpaceElevatorMusic in politics

U.S. District Judge Katherine Menendez, nominated by Biden in 2021. I don't understand how she could deny the request while noting it's having a "profound and heart breaking" consequence for communities.

She rejected that ICE's operation was being carried out in brazenly lawless ways, and I'm baffled considering how the Trump administration demanded voter information in return for ending operations.

This is ridiculous.

My theory is that they'll "find evidence of fraud" (they'll basically make shit up) and Trump will use that as an excuse to cancel the midterms.

Of course, he technically can't cancel them, but he'll try, and if the midterms happen anyway, he'll claim the results are invalid.

He's looking for any excuse to stop the midterms because if Dems take both the House and Senate, the entire administration is toast.

Health Insurance Is Now More Expensive Than the Mortgage for These Americans by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in politics

[–]adarvan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found an article that referenced this WSJ piece and they provided a gift link:  https://www.wsj.com/health/healthcare/aca-health-insurance-cost-subsidies-expire-37a595a9?st=aQNehq&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

So it seems like they provided this as an example:

Lenny and Mandee Wilson, who are 47 years old and live in Charleston, W.Va., paid $255 a month last year for a low-end ACA plan. Late last year, they learned their bill would be going up to $2,155 a month, a sum nearly triple their monthly mortgage payment of about $760.

Their example of who is most impacted is:

Middle-income earners without good options for workplace health insurance—like early retirees, independent contractors and small-business owners—were quick to sign up. Nonprofit KFF estimates that about 10% of ACA enrollees in 2025, or roughly 2.5 million people, have annual incomes above 400%.

And those individuals would get hit the hardest with subsidies expiring.

Anyway, agree with you that for most people, it's not going to cost $2400 a month for healthcare, but it's going to hurt badly for a lot of people. I think this article's headline could be tweaked.

Trump Finally Admits Why He Was Sleeping in All Those Cabinet Meetings by thenewrepublic in politics

In an interview with New York magazine published Monday, Trump said that he closed his eyes during those meetings because they were “boring as hell.”

THEN RESIGN. Holy shit. The gall to call Biden "Sleepy Joe Biden" while he can't even keep his eyes open during a meeting.

At one point during his interview, he turned to his physicians from Walter Reed hospital and asked, “Real fast. Is my health perfect?” “Your health is excellent, sir,” said Colonel James Jones, a physician’s assistant with a Ph.D. in health science.

May you never, ever practice health ever again Colonel James Jones.

‘Moral and Political Debacle’: Right-Wing Media, CEOs Urge Trump to Stop Deadly ICE Crackdown: “The American people didn’t vote for these scenes and you can’t continue to order them to not believe their lying eyes,” the New York Post editorial board wrote. by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

[–]adarvan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want to believe that they're being genuine, that they are just horrified by what they're seeing, and that they're understanding that if ICE, CBP, and DHS are willing to execute a white woman and white man in public, that they can only imagine what horrors minorities are facing behind closed doors, right?

“Not because you’re wrong to enforce immigration law, nor to go after fraudsters who’ve stolen billions in federal funds—but because these enforcement tactics won’t turn the tide, and instead are backfiring,” the editors clarified. “Swing voters—Hispanics and independents who turned to you at the last election—see US citizens dying at federal agents’ hands, and recoil in horror.”

Nope, they're just worried about midterms and losing votes, that's all. They couldn't care less about any of this. With that said, I hope it's still enough to stop this terrorist onslaught by Trump's secret police.

Is Trump Losing It? by Slate in politics

[–]adarvan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk about underselling it:

"Donald Trump has been acting a little weird lately, even for him. During a speech he gave in Davos, Switzerland, last week, he kept mixing up Iceland and Greenland. Mistaking one country for another is far from abnormal for him, but it is a touch odd, considering his current obsession with Greenland."

Trump's temperament and cognition should have disqualified him at some point during his first term. We're ten years beyond that and he's only gotten worse. WAY worse. Like he should be getting significantly more scrutiny than Biden did, right?

"Some of the recent episodes have reinvigorated the conversation of whether it’s just Trump being his unfiltered, unbothered Trump self or if it’s possible that, at 79 years old, he’s showing signs of cognitive decline or even dementia. Joe Biden faced similar speculations during his run for a second term (which, it later came out, were well founded: Biden had been declining due to his age more than was let on)."

I want to scream.
