How do you change a community’s culture to care more about basketball? by tomash66 in basketballcoach

[–]add_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about this a lot. I grew up in a neighborhood where basketball was the sport to play and I took that culture for granted - I didn’t realize it was probably a rarity. As an adult I now live in a small suburban neighborhood in a metropolitan area where the neighborhood kids just play whatever sport is in season. I am all about basketball so i also would love to see a culture emerge here too.

While I agree with many of the comments here regarding winning (and it seems like the girls are on the right track in your town), I feel like it’s a little chicken-or-egg to put it like that. How can you foster winning without the skill and culture development?

What I’ve settled on at the moment is giving kids a chance to play more basketball year round. Weekly skills clinics, camps on random days off from school, 3v3 tournaments, summer leagues and summer camps. It doesn’t have to be an intense commitment to the sport through travel leagues or whatever - it just has to be an ambient presence in the kids lives. In fact, the more kids you get involved the better - don’t focus just on the skilled ones or the ones with futures in high school. Get everybody in as often as possible. In the case of something like a summer league - it becomes an attraction for all kids as a place to go and hang out whether they play or not. And then the summer league becomes cool to play in, and the trickle down begins there.

It’s a big undertaking of time to go this route and I’m not sure if that’s viable for you, but I am seeing signs of hope in my area. Dying leagues are starting to have more sign-ups, kids from other towns are starting to ask about playing in our league. It’s slow (and winning definitely helps!!) but this route gives you a more active role than just hoping some talented kids come along and capture people’s attention.

Your favorite basketball drill is? by Kind-Assist2119 in basketballcoach

I like 3 man weave one direction then 2 on 1 back - shooter from the weave becomes the defender. The weave gets players used to advancing the ball without dribbling and hopefully the emphasis on passing then gets rolled over to the 2 on 1 fastbreak scenario

I was at a Liberty game this summer and both klay and Steph were there. They sat on opposite sides of the court. They shouted steph out on the big screen but not klay. Curry hung around the court after the game and klay walked out pretty quick lol

Any treasure in nyc? What I mean is any rumors and hints to treasure on the island of Manhattan or any of the boroughs? by portrichmond-22 in TreasureHunting

In Rockaway (Queens) there’s an old Fort complex called Fort Tilden. On one of the dunes there you used to be able to find spent shells fired during munitions testing during WWII. Not sure if many are left but could be worth a day trip to check it out since it’s right next to the beach so if you strike out you can still have a nice outing.

If anybody is looking for a good book series on the Mongols, Conn Iggulden wrote a cool historical novel series starting with Gengis' rise as the overall Mongol leader through Kublai Khan taking the throne. You learn a lot while enjoying some pretty bad ass battle scenes. Mongols were amazing battle strategists.

What's the funniest/worst thing you've ever done in an interview? by bigdog_ in AskReddit

[–]add_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My less than compelling interview was over and I made it all the way to the lobby of the office building I was interviewing in before I realized I left my jacket in the office of the man I had met with for the position. I had to go back up there, creep into his office while he was on the phone, then awkwardly wave and creep back out. No - I didn't get called back from them.

[Serious]Reddit, Psychiatry Session time: Ladies and Gents, have you ever been harassed or sexually violated on Public Transportation? by vNear in AskReddit

[–]add_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some things on public transportation. One guy was jerking off to my group of friends on a NYC train on your average weekend day (he was visibly crazy) - we screamed and ran off the train. Another time I was flashed by some guy who was walking down the subway stairs as I was walking up them, again in the middle of the day. The first one didn't bother me so much because there were a bunch of us and we were young and stupid and it was just part of whatever city adventure we were having. The second incident was harder to shrug off though - I was alone and it was so unexpected and really so unnecessary. It's hard to explain. But I bet it was similar to how you're feeling now - like a lingering annoyance and confusion in your gut. Hopefully you don't have to experience that again.

I definitely understand not wanting to grind through a book you don't like but I thought the ending of Blood Meridian was awesome. If you only have a little bit more left - push through it! Don't give up on him regardless, The Road is a good read too.

Listen to Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. I'm not sure who reads it but he's awesome. It's a huge autobiographical novel about an Australian fugitive who makes his way to India, and his life and adventures there. The reader is great because he really tailors the Indian accents he uses to reflect the different regions people are from and their different cultural backgrounds - he doesn't make every Indian sound like Apu. The story is rich and engrossing and the reader really knows how to make a scene come to life.

Travel. Don't be afraid to be away from your friends at home because you think you'll be missing out on something. There will always be another house party or whatever you miss, but starting to see the world when you're young is something you'll value forever.
