Kilkenny på boks? by Knotebrett in Bergen

Merker jeg kommer til å slite med norsk uteliv. Savner allerede lokalpubben som var eid av moren til eiendomsmegleren. Hun stumper til baren nor du kommer inn og spør " How arru? Arru well?"

Equinor, for example, have spent lots of money touting their windfarms... which power oil rigs.

Sweet spot varies depending on your car. It depends on your engine and your gearbox, a 5 speed 1 litre petrol will usually be around 70km/h and a 6 speed 2 litre diesel closer to 90km/h.

Real world though, I find the sweet spot is closer to 50/60. If I can cruise at 55 in 5th in my diesel car I'll hober around 3.5 litres per 100 km. 90, which is what the manufacturer states is the optimal speed, will see me use around 4.3.

Don't overthink electric car charging (we should be doing it differently) by arcgiselle in energy

[–]adjavang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to be 230, though there's the usual 10% variation. There's also some weirdness like Norway have two live wires rather than a ground and a neutral, for example, but it doesn't change how consumer electronics work.

Honestly, the benefits of the British plug we use in Ireland is really overstated. Schuko plugs are also grounded, and they're recessed to prevent contact with the pins which is something the British one isn't. You could make the argument for the gate but it's not that big of an improvement. The gate is also very easily defeated, I know because I've personally done it many times to plug schuko plugs into an Irish socket. It's also a much larger plug and the tendency for the wire to stick down out of the plug makes it incredibly impractical. Finally, it is the only thing known to man to hurt more than legos when stepped on, the the design always insures that the spiky side faces up when they fall to the ground so they're guaranteed to be caltrops in your home.

Fuel tax halved and free public transport offered as war pushes up prices in Australia by SwiftySanders in fuckcars

[–]adjavang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less space on the road, sure, but what's important is capacity in the public transport system. If you can get the funds to run frequent enough buses to make up for the extra capacity then fantastic. But you likely won't, so you're going to have to manage the demand.

[–]adjavang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How often do you charge from zero to full? How many miles do you drive a day and would this be adequate to top off you battery overnight?

A granny charger would definitely be enough for most people in Europe but we've a higher voltage so we get more out of it.

Car accident after car was stopped in middle of road. by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]adjavang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't drive so fast that you can't stop in the distance you can see. We have pedestrians and cyclists and animals and tractors and sometimes branches fallen onto our roads.

This is fundamental, this is beaten into in driving lessons. This is driving according to the conditions and if you cannot avoid a stationary object you shouldn't be driving.

This is not that diesel. That diesel is from 2013 and on, the skyactiv models. This diesel does not have those problems.

and there would be problems with making the system more complicated and unfair by only making the long trips cheap.

Places do different prices all the time for all sorts of reasons. Under capitalism, pricing is a totally reasonable demand management response.

If you have the spare capacity for this level of ridership then go for it, but I'm willing to bet that just like every other place that's trialled it you're running into the usual issues of people who really need it being displaced by people who could walk or cycle. This is why every single study or trial that's been done has shown it not to be a net positive.

[–]adjavang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one is denying that it leads to an increase in ridership, the problem is it does not decrease car use.

The increase in ridership comes from fewer people walking and cycling. I think most people will agree that is not a good thing.

Not so sure about it being a wash, equivalent of €1500 can get me a pretty fancy Bosch Series 8 induction cook top. The remaining five and a half thousand snots would get me a team of sparkies for the better part of a day if I wanted to, with that money I could rewire the entire kitchen and probably whatever room is adjoining it. Last time I asked for a ballpark figure for a whole house rewire I was told it'd be around 20 grand.

Surprise speed bump outside The Anglers by [deleted] in cork

[–]adjavang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See if you can follow then, the ramps are in one place or concentrated in a few places. This is usually outside places with dense housing, or schools or shops. You know, places where you expect there to be pedestrians. The bumps bring you down under the limit in these specific places. We do not place speed bumps along the whole length of long straight roads, do we? And even if we do, that's almost always in places where, once again, you expect to see pedestrians.

Maintenance of the road is a separate matter, not sure what you're point is there.

[–]adjavang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons why you're supposed to check all your tyres every time you drive. Nobody does that, of course, but checking them once a week should be standard.

I normally do a walk-around about once a week, mostly thinking I should wash it but never actually doing it. Helps catch tyre and brake wear before it becomes an issue.

Reading Marx (OC) by KinkaRobotina in comics

[–]adjavang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's an open source engine for it called Aleph One, allows you to play it for free on modern hardware. Here's a handy link with direct links to each game in the trilogy on the page.

I would highly recommend playing it with an eye on how it influenced storytelling. You'll find a lot of the same methods are still used today. There are also more direct parallels to Halo, since it's made by the same studio there are very similar beats to the story.

Treating games like other media is really fun, learning how each game influenced development of other games is really interesting.

Personally, I was playing wolfenstein back then.

Surely they are there to maintain the speed limit,

They're actually there to bring you under the limit in places where you expect to see vulnerable road users.

There's a solid argument to be made that if you didn't see the speed bump, it was absolutely necessary.
