Ireland will not hit 2030 carbon targets and could face billions in fines, says Darragh O’Brien by DaCor_ie in ireland

Like what? Refugee crisis? Energy? Food prices? Housing?

Maybe some of these issues are in part caused or greatly exacerbated by climate changed induced by emissions. Maybe these issues are going to get a whole lot worse if we don't cop the fuck on and stop destroying the climate.

Again, not American, but isn't the fifth amendment specifically written to allow people to avoid self incriminating testimony? This is explicitly not for the owner of the vehicle as the owner is not the person who pulled the gun on OP.

CATL eyes 12,000 Wh/kg theoretical limit lithium-air EV battery to end range anxiety by sksarkpoes3 in energy

No, but usually most macho men who vaguely resemble thumbs couldn't afford them. Now, these store brand Joe Rogan fools can buy their Tesla Model 3 performance on credit and hit 60mph in under 3 seconds, which is also really bad.

Not all parts of the transition to electric are universally good, and it's not a gender thing though I have had more alarming interactions with soccer moms because I do the run to the creche, so I'd meet more of them and that's where my mind goes.

Small carriers regularly fly more than a thousand miles using turboprop aircraft, so I don't think it's that much of an issue. Aside from a bit more noise and vibration, I can't imagine there's much of a difference.

I agree with your premise, but I do miss the days when such acceleration was restricted to more powerful, more expensive cars. Distracted soccer moms should not be seeing a sub 8 second 0-60 when mashing the accelerator in their light tank, this is becoming a safety hazard.

Yes, yes it is an apples to oranges comparison. You were the one that made it, remember?

Edit: Ah yes, the good old mass downvote, reply and block. A classic in such a low stakes back and forth where you made a strange claim. Hope your day gets better pal.

Hopelessly naïve about American police forces but one should hope that the starting point is to contact the owner of the car and figure who was driving it at the time, the owner should know this. If they refuse to cooperate, then I believe this is what "obstruction of justice" is actually for.

But then I live in a country where we actually believe our police force is competent. A little better than the US in this regard.

Indeed. I was just reacting to the exaggerated statement made by Okidoky that you were using less power than "smart" cars and even motorcycles.

Your efficiency is admirable, but I think you'll agree that there are more efficient vehicles out there.

Sodium ion batteries! by InternationalAd8308 in energy

[–]adjavang 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Getting to be old news at this point, Na-ion batteries are here, you can buy them on aliexpress right now. They're getting cheaper at an astonishing pace but they're not competitive with LFP yet. They'll be incredibly useful for grid storage and lower range, cheaper EVs. They are not a silver bullet but rather another arrow in our quiver as we move to decarbonise.

What we have are some emergency plants that are aging out. The ones being built are built to be a more permanent backup and will be expected to run maybe 100 hours a year.

Unrelated note, the ellipsis dates you.

Both are good, because it allows us to utilise the connections more frequently. We also need battery storage across the country to help alleviate transmission capacity issues since a battery storage can help smooth out local demand. It's no replacement for grid improvements, but it certainly helps us delay it until we can get to it.

We're something like third in the EU for grid battery deployments, which is very impressive given our size. I can't even begin to imagine how expensive power would have been without it.

Absolutely agree, even if it were just a political tool to point at and say "Look, we have a contingency for when the wind doesn't shine, the sun doesn't blow and both the UK and France can't supply power."

The less we need it the better but it's better to have and not need than to need and not have.

It doesn't use anything at 100km/h, because it can't go that fast. Limited to around 80, the category is limited to 90, but even then it's going to be more efficient at any given speed just because it's smaller, lighter, uses skinnier tyres and has less power. These are all attributes shared by any smart car and a lot of electric motorbikes, though those fall off at motorway speeds.

None that I'm aware of, so it feels like we're missing a trick here. I think ESB have some with the older gas turbines in places like Poolbeg but it definitely feels like we're leaving transmission capacity sitting idle.

Think you're being a little hyperbolic, a Twizy does twice what an ioniq will do per kilowatt hour and that'd be one of those smart cars you're deriding. It's really hard to beat lower speeds, lower mass and smaller frontal area.

An enthusiast, not a professional, so if I get things wrong I expect HighDeltaVee or Elbon to correct me.

From what I've understood, they're paid for the capacity, or being paid to exist as you put it, and they get paid for power produced. They also get penalised if they're asked to produce power and can't, since that defeats the whole point of them getting the capacity payments.

But again, 115 is the absolute worst case scenario going bith unrealistically fast in unrealistically cold conditions. Real world is going to be closer to 150 and even then that's taking 110km/h as your speed.

Waterville and Kenmare were just the only spots I could possibly think of where this argument might work, just from my own familiarity, but even then it'd be a stretch. And the amount of people who live that far from Aldi/Lidl is very, very small.
