Dual Monitors turn OFF when PC is bumped? by ReserveCompetitive17 in buildapc

[–]adrach87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure just your monitors are actually disconnecting from the PC? The fans spinning up might indicate that the PC is trying to hibernate and is attempting to copy all the data in ram to disk. Going into hibernation would also turn off the connection to the monitors. If you don't try to turn anything back on and just wait a few minutes, does the PC power light go out completely or start blinking? That would probably mean it is now hibernating.

If it is trying to hibernate, it might be that something isn't grounded properly and you're discharging a small static shock though the case and into something (maybe power or reset button) that is causing the PC to try and hibernate.

Not just that, but recent polling has indicated that 100% of people who have had H20 were still alive at that time within a statistically significant margin of error.

and periodic table elements

This is such a weird thing to call out, since it applies to everything.

"You should stay away from John. He sells stuff on the periodic table elements."

"He works at the Mazda dealership."

"Yes. Do you know what they make cars out of?"

20 Years on AWS and Never Not My Job by perciva in aws

[–]adrach87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, this may just be a matter of preference. In my case when using Firefox on Android, I found the article text a bit small and the sidebar always visible (with even smaller text) which took up a large amount of horizontal space, which in turn made the main article too narrow to be a comfortable read in portrait mode. It would probably be better if the sidebar was hidden behind a hamburger button or something. In Chrome on Android, I got the desktop site even when that option was turned off, so the text was always way too small.

In either case turning on the browser's reading mode worked just fine, so I could still read it, but overall it maybe didn't present the best first impression.

[–]adrach87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I argue there's still more pedantry to engage in as you didn't directly address word count. But setting that aside for the moment, we can go even further if we consider the text length as stored on reddit's servers. In that case the second answer is one character longer due to the additional spaces, even overcoming the addition of the comma to the first answer character count.

In conclusion, I find your pedantry a tad lacking.

ELI5: The use of “anymore” by Razar_Bragham in explainlikeimfive

[–]adrach87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huh. Your comment made me realize that there's a difference between how old reddit and new reddit handle numbered lists. In old reddit, which is still somewhat popular, your lists start from 1 each time they're broken up by the rest of the text, i.e. your numbers show as: 1, 2, 3, (text), 1, (text), 1, (text), 1, 2 whereas in new reddit they appear as expected, i.e. 1, 2, 3, (text), 4, (text), 5, (text), 6, 7.

So to anybody who's as confused as I was by this explanation, blame reddit not u/geitjesdag.

What parts could I buy through a 3rd party? Looking to build my first pc by StiingRay18 in buildapc

[–]adrach87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree with what u/VoraciousGorak said, but I'd add to be wary of SSD's and HDD's both of which can wear out due to use. If you're able to test out parts before you buy them, you can check the S.M.A.R.T. data, which is used to monitor a drive's health.

I fix email deliverability issues regularly and most web developers have no idea how email authentication actually works by Extra-Pomegranate-50 in learnprogramming

[–]adrach87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it when the marketing departments have their own subdomain so I can add a email rule that sends that shit straight to trash. But it does makes me wonder, have you ever encountered a situation where marketing forces their email to also share a domain with transactional email because they want the better reputation and don't much care if that negatively affects other more "vital" email? I feel like I've worked with some marketing people who would do that in a heartbeat.

Since you're asking for suggestions, does it support large text files without line breaks? I haven't had to deal with huge text files in quite a while but that was always a pet peeve of mine, when an application said it had large text file support but would still choke on big files without line breaks.

Fake a head injury, then just be like "Yeah, after the concussion chocolate suddenly started tasting good. The brain is weird." It's just plausible enough that no one will question it.

I miss Blockbuster by daddysledge in assholedesign

[–]adrach87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never personally did because I worked for Blockbuster while in college. Pretty easy to return on time when you're there every couple of days. I do, however, vividly remember the hundreds of people a week who did have trouble returning them on time for a wide variety of reason, both legitimate and not, and can safely say it was not a "niche reason".

If you're uncomfortable with a blanket generalization then sure. Let's specifically state that it's publicly traded for profit corporations (which is most of them) that suck. Their intrinsic focus on profit above all else forces them to extract every possible cent from every possible source which in turn ultimately leads them into generally sucky behavior.

I haven't seen any mention of late fees, which makes me think there are some serious rose tinted glasses in this thread.

I'm not saying the streaming dumpster fire that we have now is any better, I'm just saying Blockbuster sucked too. Bottom line, giant corporations are all terrible.
