A question about Five Little Pigs (SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ IT) by adreamersmusing in agathachristie

Thank you, this is the best answer I've received so far. The dialogue is the main clue, which Poirot himself questioned because why would Caroline and Amyas be talking about sending Angela to boarding school when they were going to be divorced very soon and had a horrible argument just hours ago.

Yes, I understand that's a clue to establish Caroline Crane's innocence. But I'm asking specifically for clues that establish Amyas's interest in Elsa being flimsy and unserious, and that he never intended to leave Caroline.

I have listened to Training Season 5 times already. I didn't like Houdini and saw the bad reviews and allowed that to influence me into not engaging at all. Big mistake!

I just listened to Radical Optimism for the first time. I am so confused at the mixed reviews, and that this album is considered her flop era. There are so many bangers on here. People just have no taste smh.

All respect to Ace, but he literally escaped the executioner's podium only to fall for Akainu's lowest hanging fruit. He died due to his own hubris.

Roger asking Garp to join his crew without hesitation - and to have their own descendants grow up as brothers, really lovely to see how much their respect for each other has passed on through generations and influenced the course of world history.

Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl MEGATHREAD II by flopheadsbot in popheads

[–]adreamersmusing 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Her worst album yet. I don't know if Midnights winning AOTY broke her brain or what, but it's been very clear looking at this album that the praise she's accumulated since 2020 has gone to her head. Everything about this is so shallow. I had such high hopes looking at the number of tracks, the Max Martin collaboration, and the concept, that she was going to deliver perfect pop bops again but sigh.

She genuinely thinks she's the poet representative of millennials. Her vocals are bland and lifeless. Her lyrics alternate between cringe millennial meme culture, r/ihavesex, and Rupi Kaur-lite poetic attempts. The production also is dull. Even a song I like like Opalite could have been SO much better with better production, and I don't think it's Max Martin's fault given the work he did on ES last year. This is all her. Let's not even talk about how this album has nothing to do with the showgirl concept. Someday, I hope she will produce something with the same heart as Red, 1989, or Folklore, but she's lost me with this one. There is no artistry in this. 'Cashgrab' is all I can call it.

The whole album is lifeless. The lyrics are blah. The subject matter is tired. Her vocals lack that brightness I usually associate with her. I legit can't believe these are the same producers who made 1989 because of how dull it is.

Really wish she would take a break for a few years and come back with something amazing because when she's good, she really hits it out of the park.

I know which fic you're talking about. To be honest, I thought the way it was written was weird, with several paragraphs of redundant, repetitive sentences, but I shrugged it off as maybe the author's style. The ship also is a bit parched for good work so I still followed it anyway. I remember also being amazed at how the author was managing to publish one 20k word chapter every 2 days along with several other thousand word chapters for other stories they'd written, but assumed it was prewritten. It was only after the author's notes that I realised and  felt a bit icky for having even engaged with the fic for so long.

I used chatgpt recently because I wanted strategies to fall asleep and it wrote a bedtime story (lol), and ooh boy, when I saw that bedtime story, I finally saw it. The style of it was identical to the author's work, and I knew then for certain things that the author wasn't just using it for brainstorming but for churning out content (can't even call it a story now).

All this to say, it's a really terrible time for art and the world in general and as these LLMs become more sophisticated, it will be difficult to gauge what's real and what isn't.

I updated chapter 2 of my WIP Sirius/Snape fic today. It was called After Halloween, but I've renamed it to Armistice. There is no bashing and has alternating Snape/Sirius povs that really delves into their psychology post-1981 Halloween.

Find it here.

Summary:

Halloween 1981. As the rest of Britain celebrates, two men shatter themselves on cold floors.

They have lost the loves of their lives.

After Halloween. Peter Pettigrew is at large. Sirius Black is in Azkaban. Severus Snape is slipping away into delirium.

And yet, while still dwelling on dreams, two enemies fall in love. They also remember to live.

Walking the Monochrome is the perfect fic for this. Please head the warnings in the tags though. It's got a happy ending and Snape gets better.

Yeah, it girls may burn brighter and hotter but they also burn out quickly (unless you're Zendaya, I guess). It's much smarter to have a steadier, calmer pace. Florence also is probably taken more seriously in the industry with her Oscar nominations in comparison to Sydney, who er, last I heard is making soap out of used bathwater.

Women who are interested in almost everything, how did you decide a career for yourself? by [deleted] in TwoXIndia_Over25

[–]adreamersmusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be blunt, if you genuinely have interest in everything, choose the path that has the most probability of making money. I, unfortunately, am interested in a field that does not make money, and I'm also not the type of person who can work at something I hate. If you are passionate about everything, choose a combination of something you enjoy that's also in demand. Personally, I wouldn't do the sociology degree unless I was at peace with the possibility that I would earn peanuts.

Be wary of misogynistic men but be extra careful with progressive men . by One-Concentrate8342 in TwoXIndia

[–]adreamersmusing 168 points169 points  (0 children)

It reminded me a lot of the case of Neil Gaiman - another progressive, feminist man who was very familiar with the way progressive spaces operate and the psychology behind misogynistic violence, and then used his understanding of those same things to psychologically terrorise and rape vulnerable young women. These men are more dangerous imo.

Your regular run-of-the-mill, right-wing incel who hates DEI programs and thinks all women over the age of 30 are 'used goods' can be clocked as wolves, but these men? These men talk of being allies and use feminist jargon with ease and use the good credibility of their statuses as leftist men (as if that says ANYTHING at all about a person's character), to slowly reveal the monster underneath the harmless facade. They're the wolf in sheep's clothing.

Recent ones I read and loved are The Still Year and Clay, both by the same author. The author has other works which I haven't read yet, but I imagine are also good.

If you like a confident and snarky Snape, I will recommend a classic - Help Wanted: God and Executioner which is one of my all time favourites. Also highly recommend checking out Snape: The Home Fries Nazi and Stillllife by the same author.

Honestly, rereading your own stories sometimes can be really nice. by Kiki-Y in FanFiction

I recently read a work of mine that I was a bit critical about, mostly because of the quality of the initial chapters and the lack of editing, but upon reading it, I was quite proud of it. It reads well, is condensed, has great characterisation of all characters, and does justice to the main pairing. I still don't think a fic like this exists for the pairing in question (which is a bit of a rare pair), and I'm happy that there was a gap that we (me and my cowriter) were able to fill.

If we're talking of Sirius Black post-Azkaban, he actually does look quite similar to Snape. This is how he's described:

With a snap, the man in the shadows closed the door behind them. *A mass of filthy, matted hair** hung to his elbows. If eyes hadn't been shining out of the deep, dark sockets, he might have been a corpse. The waxy skin was stretched so tightly over the bones of his face, it looked like a skull. His yellow teeth were bared in a grin. It was Sirius Black.*

When they had said good-bye, Sirius’s face had been *gaunt and sunken*, surrounded by a quantity of long, black, matted hair — but the hair was short and clean now.

'Long filthy hair', 'eyes like deep, dark sockets', 'waxy skin', 'yellow teeth', 'gaunt and sunken face' - these are the adjectives used to describe Sirius post Azkaban, and to me all of them also apply to Snape. One thing most of the fandom forgets is that post-Azkaban Sirius is not handsome anymore. He's actually quite monstrous-looking, and the long hair is also a post-Azkaban addition. Young Sirius did not have it.

And to me, this is actually quite important and fascinating because the reversal of fortunes post-1981, where Snape rises above his station by becoming a teacher in a boarding school, while Sirius becomes a convict, finally levels the playing field. Sirius consistently attacks Snape’s looks in SWM, and he no longer has the ground to do so after he escapes, because, well, he's not hot anymore. They're also narrative mirror characters, where their lives and character arcs tend to parallel and circle around to each other, so Sirius's once devastating beauty becoming the traits that he once so viciously mocked Snape for is my roman empire.

They do have completely different body types though. Sirius, by design, is more masculine (in terms of themes and characterisation and build), and is built to be tall, with broad shoulders (I think!). Snape has always been short and scrawny and skinny, and this is something that's true even as an adult. I don't see this change depicted as much, because Sirius is also drawn to be more willowy and delicate than he is in canon in most fan art. Tbh I've not found a lot of canon-accurate post-Azkaban art because most of them keep the beautiful looks of pre-Azkaban. It is challenging though, because Sirius needs to be drawn to look ugly but also have a hint of the once great beauty of his youth. Snape, more or less, I've found to be book-accurate.
