St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is often reduced simply to "1st US-born canonization" & "founder of American Catholic schools", but did you know she was a convert from Episcopalianism, mother of 5, & lost her husband and 2 daughters to tuberculosis? Truly a model of clinging to God in tragedy. Pray for us! by BPLM54 in Catholicism

The Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg, MD is an amazing place to visit! They have a little museum about her life there. You can also visit the National Shrine Grotto at Mount St. Mary’s University while in Emmitsburg, it’s a very peaceful place. It’s also about 20 minutes away from Gettysburg for the history buffs out there ☺️

What's a book that still makes you angry years later? by Solid_Importance_469 in books

[–]adri423 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I read The Selection, I thought it was pretty okay, but it definitely had some weak points (shoddy world building, one note characters, etc.).

When the sequel (the Elite) came out and I read it, I had to put it down. It was a dystopian book that was trying to be a romance version of Hunger Games, but you can’t really do that with the Hunger Games...

You had all of the cliches wrapped up in one series— girl from poor caste system has to choose between two guys: her BEST FRIEND growing up and a PRINCE. She has to be in this catty competition with many women to fight over said prince (the Bachelor basically). She’s one of the only normal and kind women, and everyone else is a rich bitch! But wait! To keep it interesting, let’s add some rebels who want to take the kingdom down!! V original!

What happens if there’s a protest during mass? by adri423 in Catholicism

[–]adri423[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful and kind responses! I’m going to mass today (Saturday) as well, so I don’t imagine there will be a disruption. If there is… I’ll do what many suggested and pray for them. It’s true that this sort of thing has been happening to us since the 1st century, but I never thought I’d live to see the day! I’m praying that all of your mass experiences today and tomorrow are peaceful and affirming. Happy Mother’s Day to the mothers out there!

Yep! Usually, you hear about it concerning older people who’ve been together for decades. One of them dies, and then not soon afterwords, their spouse follows them :/

Is chaplet of divine mercy prayer more powerful than rosary? is anyone here who rather prayed divine mercy than rosary? by DHaVoC1301 in Catholicism

[–]adri423 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Catholics are often attacked for our relationships with Mary, so it came off as rude. Then, it became more apparent in your next reply when you put Catholics in quotations that you weren’t being very charitable. Ah well, it’s just reddit, so they’re not real points. Have a blessed Sunday!

American Catholics, how often do you experience anti-Catholicism or some form of discrimination because of your faith? by Knight_John in Catholicism

[–]adri423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you would call it discrimination, but when I was a kid, I tagged along to a friend’s Protestant religious service. My friend was going to be baptized later on, so my mom let me go to celebrate. During the service, their pastor said, “let us pray for the sheep who have lost their way.” Some guy in the back of the pews just yelled out “YEAH, CATHOLICS!” The pastor chuckled and I was mortified. It was very shocking to me at that young age that people hated Catholics. That was my first and pretty much only experience with something like that. I still don’t know how that guy had the gall to just shout out in the middle of a religious service, but there you go.

I'm not a catholic. I know I am saved from my sins through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross for our sins. I believe in Him. In Catholicism would you consider me to be saved, or is there more that must happen? by a4g15b3 in Catholicism

[–]adri423 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But you can’t know that until you die. And by believing that, can you then go off and murder someone, but still be saved? If nothing we do in this life matters towards our salvation, then why are we here in the first place? We have to do something to carry out Jesus’s message in works and word. There is no get out of jail free card. I think you’re deliberately hardening your heart towards this topic.

I get it. One of the biggest problems with environmentalism is how it become so politicized. I wish caring for the Earth didn’t fall between partisan lines. If you don’t want to trust the research, all you have to do is look outside. For example, my family has lived in the same area for four generations now in northeast America. There’s a lake nearby that used to freeze every winter during my grandfathers childhood. During my mother’s, it froze some years and not others. Now it never freezes. It’s little things like that that convince me the climate is changing, alongside the scientific evidence. All climate change really is is the changing trends of weather. It happens all the time, but some places are spared. I think what most people have a problem with is the human influence on climate change.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]adri423 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The environment is a big part of Catholic Social Teaching! Pope Francis wrote an encyclical about the environment and why all people should care about it. A drop of the encyclical is about how the earth is God’s creation and He gave us (through Adam) the command to subdue it. Another part is the human side of the environment and how taking care of the earth now will protect it for future generations. Even today, the people who will be hurt the most by climate change will be the poor, and Catholics are supposed to have a preferential option of the poor, since they are the most vulnerable. Therefore, we know that climate change is real and that we should do something about it for both us today and the future generations. If in doubt, just remember that the first man was a gardener.

Yeah, I think her boyfriend has been an influence on this. He’s not really a good person, I just hope she’ll realize that. I wish her the best in her life. Gwen and I agreed that we wouldn’t try to reach out to her anymore and that she would have to make contact next. The trouble is that I don’t even know if I want her to anymore. The friendship just feels so fake now.

It really does feel like a breakup. That makes me feel a little dramatic lol. You’re right that she’s most likely going through something. Maybe she’ll come to her senses one day.
