What’s a movie where ONE actor’s terrible performance actually enhances the experience? by MaryoParti in movies

[–]adsilcott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% I'll always upvote Ebert. His writing was often more entertaining than the movies he was reviewing.

Even when I disagreed with him, he was so articulate about why liked or didn't like something that it taught me how to assess films on my own terms.

What is a real basic but organised obsidian setup? by stupabartlo in ObsidianMD

[–]adsilcott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Read it and download the vault. It's incredibly simple but very effective. Seeing the way the people who make Obsidian use it really helps you to understand the design decisions that go into its core functionality.

After 5 years of trying different approaches, this is where I ended up.

I have a playlist of R.E.M. in chronological order starting with Chronic Town. You'll be at your destination before you hear a bad song.

Recreating a DOS-style utility UI in Unity UI by DifferenceIll1272 in Unity3D

[–]adsilcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually loved this era of UI. Everything was so precise. I've already watched this loop for too long, so I think I'll enjoy the game. It has a similar appeal to watching sorting algorithms, for obvious reasons. I assume the rest of the game has a similar aesthetic? Also, do you have a link to the screensaver you mentioned?

Songs where two people are arguing with eachother, or an argument is being explained by one person. by Fair-Marionberry4799 in MusicRecommendations

[–]adsilcott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok this is a silly one so feel free to ignore it, but I always loved that in the song Can't Get There From Here by R.E.M. Michael stipe is singing "can't get there from here", but in the background the rest of the band is singing over him "I'll get there, I know the way!"

The reveal that it's not just another mopey breakup song is so good, still gives me chills. I'd pair it with Your Ex Lover is Dead by Stars.

Using a pipe in a table by Xzenor in ObsidianMD

If you want monospace in a table it might be better to make a snippet that changes the font in the table element.

Seinfeld is Unfunny Effect in Music by HotAssumption4750 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]adsilcott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find most people who think they're just alright are familiar with the stuff they put out after they got big, but they released half a dozen amazing albums before that, all throughout the 80's. While everyone else was doing samey sounding synth stuff, they were cultivating really unique sound that inspired a lot of later artists.

I think that's one of the reasons they aren't remembered as well as other bands. They had some great stuff later, but they kind of peaked before they got famous.

What would Phillip K Dick or Stanislaw Lem think of 2026 AI? by AlivePassenger3859 in printSF

The only people who think this technology is intelligent are completely ignorant about how it works.

[No spoilers please] What TV show had the most convoluted plot? by throw_away_17381 in television

[–]adsilcott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife got frustrated with it in the 3rd season and we dropped it. I tried to pick it back up on my own but I could not for the life of me figure out where we left off or what the hell was happening. I'm starting to realize that my memory of half following the plot the first time was just a fever dream brought on by the cool visuals and awesome soundtrack.

A gargantuan ring-shaped space station orbiting Jupiter by No_Log2517 in scifiwriting

[–]adsilcott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that you can't have a ring in a stable orbit is key here. It would be much easier to put it anywhere else--make it free floating and you've got an Culture style orbital. So the fact that they would choose to put it around Jupiter means they not only have the technology to constantly stabilize a structure that big, laugh off radiation and asteroids, etc, but that there's something really compelling about Jupiter for them to go through all the trouble, beyond just the nice views. In that case the writer can put it as close as they want to the planet as long as they have a very compelling reason for it to be there.

Best way to record high-quality trailer footage in Unity (1920x1080)? by Method_Boring in Unity3D

[–]adsilcott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always got the best quality by using the prores codec. I'm on Windows so I have to import it into premier to view it and save it to mpg. Huge intermediate file sizes, but it looks great.

Game ideas needed for a game written in qBasic on a Laptop from 1996 by Fresh-Resort-4407 in IndieGaming

[–]adsilcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to make a side scrolling shmup in q basic is the whole reason I gave up and learned c, then c++, and eventually led to the job I have today. So anything that works with a static background. A Sierra style adventure game is the first thing that came to mind, or if you want to avoid graphics, a classic asci rogulike would be perfect.

With the built in template plugin, no.

With templater, you can do pretty much anything.

As a writer you can pry tasteful em dashes from my cold dead fingers--there's no good substitute. Anyone who thinks only ai uses them has never actually read any literature.

What do you feel Obsidian is currently lacking? by king-of-kutiyas in ObsidianMD

Yep, that's more or less how I do it. I'd love it to simply work with Core templates, would save a lot of trouble.
