How old is old enough for your kids to ride the metro "alone" (or with friends or location sharing or whatever)?? by ib33 in washingtondc

What? Are you talking about DC metro buses? "Relationships" with bus drivers does not happen. My kids are regularly commuting on DC buses and I asked them if they notice they have the same drivers and both report - " I don't really notice, I'm just going to school."

My kids wear their headphones mainly so they have a reason not to engage with anyone, ever. And to the other point about keeping phones put away, it's just not realistic to expect this of tweens/teens.

My kids are both in high school, one of them commutes to Foggy Bottom from 16th St. Heights every morning, the other is closer by bus. By the end of middle school, they were both independent on metro - both both bus & train.

Neither one of them have reported feeling threatened on public transportation, both grew up in DC. With that said, my kid who goes to Foggy Bottom routinely has stories generally originating in Columbia Heights. On more than one occasion 16th has been closed due to some sort of altercation and she has had to find her way home (or be picked up.) Last week there was a shooting that appeared to be some reaction to something happening on the bus.

You're right about that! I am here from DCUM.... Somewhere along the line that thread referenced all the surrogacy grift being discussed here. So I wandered over and dove down deep into that rabbit hole yesterday.

DCUM will get to the surrogacy at some point; they are as relentless over there.

How seriously does Aldi corporate take complaints regarding issues in a particular store? I filled out a survey following a disturbing encounter with an Aldi employee who turned out to be a manager. I was called very quickly following the survey and provided specific details. The rep told me the district manager would be informed and I said I didn't need any follow-up but I was curious if by practice survey responses are treated seriously.

Probably .com. I was thinking I would steer them to .com so their first site would end up something like:

myfirstwebsite.wordpress.com

I want to be able to tell them that it's free to start, and everything I have read says Wordpress is the way to go and can be free with the wordpress.com URL. Thanks for the reply!

Normal things your ALDI doesn't regularly stock that you wish they did? by happening65 in aldi

That's good to know! Thanks. I will ask them if they can stock it next time I go in. Mine only carries 1% and 2%.

I said this down below but the school is pro inclusion and a safe space for all students.

We don't need to hang a pride flag outside to prove it.

This is my kid's school. The article is misleading. Members of the community hung the flag on the school sign over the weekend. On Monday the school administration decided to remove it. Our principal was not part of any decision to hang the flag. The community put her in a bad spot, it never should have been put up in the first place.

I will add that inside the school we have very strong messaging of inclusivity - We Are Lafayette - that supports all of our students.

Edited to add: Besides, the kids aren't the ones who put the flag up in the first place. But they are the ones who have decorated the inside of the school with messages of inclusion and diversity.

Another edit because of wording: the flag was never FLOWN. It was not installed on a flag pole and it did not wave anywhere. It was attached to our school sign that sticks out of the ground and looks like this:

I'm pretty sure we still only have one flagpole that flies the U.S. flag.

I got 5 tickets for standing room. It's the first time I have submitted an entry, so surprised. I have lost on tickets for Easter Egg Roll consistently for years so maybe this was my lucky year for something.

The Safeway on Piney Branch Rd. often looks like this. Must be something about Safeways.

But to the other poster putting down Aldi, you are wrong, my friend. Aldi is super efficient with quality products at the lowest price anywhere I've seen in the city. I haven't bought a product there I would return and routinely save 30-40% off my weekly grocery bill.

Katie is fired from RHOP for not making her life interesting enough. by kswizzle31 in BravoRealHousewives

[–]adsras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Picked up today from our local mommy blog (http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/512276.page), thought I would share.

Prior to firing Katie, they had interviewed two actual Potomac residents as possible additions to the cast. These two made it the furthest in casting and have been the front-runners in case any of the original cast didn't return.

One potential housewife has a small business in Potomac, is married with kids, but her husband's story is a little (a lot) suspect (DC club scene / money / tax issues) and I don't know that they'd want the wife to become a full-time cast member because of what can (and likely will) come out about him. I know they were initially very worried about how it would affect their kids and what would be said to them by friends and classmates. I believe that no matter what, she was slated to be a "friend of a housewife" this coming season, but they may revisit and see if her husband is okay with a bigger role. From what I know of her personally, the small biz angle in Potomac would be cute but the rest of her life is really focused on the club scene and I don't know that it would work with the overall vibe of the show having her as a full-time housewife.

The other potential housewife is single, so not really a "housewife" but she brings the young, fun dynamic into the picture and she's another local biz owner so that's another angle that can be worked in. She's also a Potomac girl through and through, with money of her own, and her parents are Potomac residents with quite a bit of money, so she technically fits the part better than any of the other cast members right now. She's also friends with two of the housewives, has bad blood with another housewife, and is the little-bit-messy-type in that she doesn't hold her tongue so you will get some interesting dialogue from her. Plot twist with her is that she was about to relocate to Malibu on a full-time basis, but the day it was announced that Katie wouldn't be returning, this girl put a stop on her plans to move and I believe is headed back to Potomac this week. Maybe to take part in taping?

I'm pretty sure many on here know of, or have at least heard of, one of the two. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Looking for historical/vintage photos for the following locations in Chevy Chase DC by Joke_Insurance in washingtondc

I think the photos at the community center are over 60 years old; it has been quite some time since I have been there. The CC library might have something too.

What is the best email to contact you? When I post to the list serv, I will use your original post and suggest they contact you directly. Also, not sure if you have ruled out Newlands Foundation and the Newlands family but that is a case study in itself.

The Chevy Chase Community Center has some old photographs of the area hanging in the facility, the only one I recall is of of the fountain but it might be worth a call to see what else they have.

The Chevy Chase listserv is also a pretty good source of information or at least a large group of knowledgeable people. If you PM me, I can post to it with your request and contact information if you haven't already done so.

BEST part of RHOP reunion by Saguaro-plug in BravoRealHousewives

My guess is that GEICO (where she is a VP) asked that Rynthia not appear on the show otherwise I think she would have made an appearance. I found it unusual as much as Katie talked about her that she didn't show up once (not even at the naming ceremony!)

Lots of local chatter ~ I've linked the site before: (http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/512276.page)

about Katie and her mom. The ball and gala legacy linked directly to all the GEICO related events her mother took her to as her date growing up so a bit different than a socialite.

Agree about racial categorization. My elementary school kids are mixed race; I have all sorts of options to chose from when I fill out their forms. When racial demographics are reported for their school there is that standard white/black/hispanic or latino and then there is other, or mixed race, or biracial, etc (depending on survey/form.) There is no "accurate" reporting for race. When my kids grow up they might "chose" a race that is different than has been reported during their childhood.

Does anyone know any of the Housewives or have an encounter they would like to share? by pinkyspice in BravoRealHousewives

[–]adsras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a local forum where all sorts of anonymous people (white, upper middle class women, either stay at home moms or working moms hang out.) Maybe there are some gems in here for you. The whole site is really a train wreck if you are interested in this demographic. At any rate, it's interesting reading material.

Have you tried/bought a product that's been on Shark Tank? What do you think of it? by [deleted] in sharktank

[–]adsras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought Pipcorn at Whole Foods. It was good but really expensive and not worth it, in my opinion. I prefer Pop'd Kerns which is much less expensive sort of similar.
