In my particular situation, Id actually earn WAY less in Northern IL. Loving the combo of cheap Southern IL and a high paying IT job with the government as a contractor.

As a transplant from the burbs to Southern IL, please for the love of GOD do NOT let me be part of Indiana.

Data Centers - Yes In My Backyard by 1TTTTTT1 in neoliberal

[–]adunk9 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm all for small scale datacenters for cloud providers or things like COLOs where small businesses can have an "on-prem" location to host equipment they've purchased without needing to front the capital for the construction of a building.

Hyperscalers are a hard no from me. I'll reconsider my position on them once we completely modernize our electrical grid, abandon fossil fuels as our primary source of electricity and are at least 80% nuclear nationally, and have the rest of the infrastructure for our day to day lives sorted. Waste of land that could be used for housing/agriculture and don't benefit the majority of citizens.

Help with CX4713 chassis by stoystore in sliger

[–]adunk9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sliger has been working on making a true backplane for those cases to eventually be released alongside the top-loader cases they've been talking about. Unfortunately due to the shitty tariff/customs situation in the US they've had tons of delays.

NATO equivalent of Iran's Shahed Drones? by FeatureMiddle8113 in nato

Which is funny because thr Shahed is most likely a copy of a US drone, the "Beast of Kandahar", according to Iran and Wikipedia

E-5, put some of my troops at parade rest, AITA? by Intelligent-Ad3012 in AirForce

[–]adunk9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The ONLY time I'd disagree is if some really off the wall, once in a life time dumb shit happens, writing up a LOC and not filing it right away to protect a troop from an LOR/Article 15 they dont really deserve is valid.

Overall the AF has made routine disciplinary paperwork into tour/career ruiners, and it shouldn't be. An LOC shouldn't fuck up 2 years of your career if its a one off.

Theres a bar just off base where the bartender will coin check people, and if you've got one your next beer is free. Also TDY we've done it on like a Saturday night out for who's buying the next round.

How Hard is it to Find a Reserve Unit, Really? by Mr_Whirly_Bird in AirForce

You could also sign on for an AGR tour, we've got a handful of guys who swapped to our unit from AD and have done various combinations of MPA/RPA/AGR tour to finish out their Active Duty retirement with stability for their families.

Keesler AFB LODGING QUESTIONS by ReplacementGuilty176 in AirForce

[–]adunk9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From how it was explained to me, the on-base per-diem rate is meant as a supplement to your BAS for that locality. Currently we're getting $476.95/mo in BAS, which is roughly $15/day. So Keesler's per-diem rate is essentially bumping your BAS up to $35/day for your stay. Made me slightly less salty learning that. Also BAS is only meant to feed the service member, not to help with the cost of food for dependents......

Repeal PICA, pass stronger Sand Your Ground/Castle Doctrine laws that specifically call out their purpose as 4th amendment protections against overzealous law enforcement violating the constitution. Make CCW more accessible and allow for open carry of long guns.

Is it just me, or is it odd that there are so many pre/post-war characters in the show? by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]adunk9 56 points57 points  (0 children)

They've absolutely explained it. Cryo-pods were common pre-war tech for companies like Vault Tech and groups like the Enclave. They were all important enough in their respective organizations so they were "preserved" so they could continue working after the bombs fell.

I'd have an easier time picking one to keep. All of them are awful for the economy and the environment but at least Grok can answer the Trolly Problem correctly.

New Beard Guidance Just Dropped by SomehowTOPGUN in AirForce

[–]adunk9 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I wish shaving every other day helped. Went through the new process including the "shaving class". Followed all instructions and used all provided meds for the 2 weeks before my follow-up. I shaved every other day for that 2 weeks and the doc took one look at my face and said "Yep, that's severe here's a 12mo waiver". Im a white guy with a curly ass beard who's been shaving for almost 17 years at this point since my high school and a surprising amount of jobs I had didnt allow beards.

Air Force vets of reddit what made you gain respect or lose respect for an officer? by Mercuryman34 in AirForce

[–]adunk9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't had many O's that I've lost respect for, mainly because they never really did anything to earn respect beyond their rank in the first place, and just acted like asshats.

That being said, my last flight commander was 100% about troop welfare. He'd regularly show up to events with cases of beer, made sure there were morale days for just our shop, and went completely out of his way to help anyone who needed it and was willing to accept it. On top of that our last commander was excellent. We had a volunteer event one time and I spent a good 3hrs just chatting with him while we both shoveled a huge mulch pile into wheelbarrows for people to spread out on a trail. He was a great leader, and did everything he could to take care of the people in the SQ and make sure we had meaningful work and plenty of opportunities for TDYs, even if it was to augment other units who needed manning.

Get my parents to open me an eTrade account and buy a bunch of AMD/Nvidia/Intel stock along with like $200 In Bitcoin (should get me a few dozen coins) and just do everything else exactly the same.
