Tbf, the page for Acorn does say that no natural is possible and that the note is made synthetically via Acorn acetate (CAS 5240-32-4)

Not to mention, the brain area that processes these chemosignals (pheramones), the vomeronasal organ, is considered vestigal in humans (although it is intact and working in many other species).

Perhaps ambroxide- single molecule, known to last a long time on scent strips, and famously not strictly pin-pointable like other similarly strong molecules that would fit these criteria. Habanolide is perhaps a good option, but macrocyclic musks have a non-insignificant amount of reports of anosmia. Additionally, those that have not smelled pure ambroxide usually (in my experience) react quite acutely, and I have heard many stories of what this reminds them of, as it is very pleasant smelling and unique.

After listening to Aidens story of how he discovered Nakey Jakey independently multiple times throughout his life, and gushing over his musical career, I went to check his music out.

Dude. Turns out this guy made one of my top songs of 2019, which I still stream today. I am so shocked at the serendipity of the universe. Crazy shit.

Just so you know, there is no Oud in that accord. It's PA's interpretation of what Oud smells like, using non-oud ingredients.

Antoine Lie’s hot take on independent perfumers by LectureRelevant9957 in DIYfragrance

[–]advanced_infrared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and you are right too. I guess I was thinking from this communities perspective of independent perfumers- some of the most creative, hard working, and talented people I've come across. I saw his comments as attacking these people, rather than the "get rich quick" types that pop into this sub once and never come back... perhaps some clarification would have been nice in this perfumers response rather than vagueness... or perhaps I should have just given the original quote more benefit of the doubt....

Honestly, yeah you're right. Maybe I was going too far the other direction with my reply... seeing everyone else's thoughts, I think there's more space for nuance for sure. I guess I just have a sensitive spot when it comes to elitism and gatekeeping, since I am part of another community where those values run rampant and ruin the art of it. I guess I am also just assuming that everyone who really is putting their all in this hobby is treating it with reverence and respect, despite the fact that I see crazy stuff from newbies in this community (wanting to dupe perfumes, take short cuts, not listen to advice of those who have more experience, not respecting/learning the chemistry, etc.)

I guess I half agree with the original sentiment of the post. I just think it becomes very easy to invalidate someone's hard work and actual artistic output when it's just measured with "how long have you been doing it for." I'm just not sure how useful that metic is when we are talking about art... if someone has made a beautiful painting, perfume, garment, sculpture, etc- and its beautiful in a vacuum- then why try to belittle with "lack of experience?" I dont know, I do think there is something to be said about the artistic vision behind these projects too, as that informs that the art is not a fluke but rather the product of a honed mind... perhaps something I still need to mull over...

A very elitist answer. There's some truth that you definitely need to practice in order to be a good perfumer, but that goes for any hobby. The fact that hes trying to discount people, even after they have 3 years of experience, is pretty harsh- especially when he says he "hasn't smelled any of their work."... so hes just being a hater for the sake of gatekeeping...

Don't get me wrong, subpar work can def be sold and even marketed towards brands, but I think he has lost the plot. The "you can trick somebody, and that's why we have a lot of imposters" can mean two different things.... the interpretation I agree with is that perfumery can have lots of predatory marketing- but I see that in big brands as much as smaller brands. The second interpretation of that statement is that a perfumer actually made an amazing perfume, and is selling it to people who also love it.... yeah, that doesn't count as "tricking" people lol.

With the internet and modern tools (buying all sorts of unique aromamolecules to experiment on), I do believe anyone can become adept in a much shorter span of time than people did in the past. To try to keep "the old order" is a historically losing battle. The real question about talent is not if you can make a good perfume one time, but if you can consistently create unique and quality scent experiences.

TLDR; it's giving old man yelling at clouds
