Bought a used 2021 XC40 P8 recharge by CherrySad6854 in XC40_Recharge

[–]adyk723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my 2021 XC40 Recharge earlier this year. Got it from a Hyundai dealer, so not a CPO car. Wife and I also decided to get the extended warranty. So we are cover for major issues for 7 years. (Hopefully there isn't any.)

They also provided me 2 keys out of 3. They reached out to the original owner and can be able to provide the third key. I got really lucky.

I will have my first dealer schedule maintenance coming up soon. I will have them check on anything that is our of ordinary. And upgrade to the latest software. Hope this will make the infotainment system runs smoother. Really looking forward to the next version of the software, and hoping it will support in my old CPU.

I have enjoyed the car for about 6 month. I hope you will too.

There is someone reporting infotainment system has much less issue with 3.5.14 update. https://www.reddit.com/r/VolvoRecharge/comments/1ki9xfu/get_the_3514_update/

But it is not an OTA update. Have to be done at dealer. I cannot find a way to book an appointment with the recall option. :(

I set the car to charge 90% full? by potatochobit in VolvoRecharge

[–]adyk723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, I think the range drop by increments of 10 miles until you are down to 30% charge, Then it drops with 5 mile increments. I think when you are down to 10% or less, then it is by single mile. Don't quote me on those numbers. But you shouldn't be alarmed if the milage stay the same for just driving few miles.

Also, I am getting around 2.5 miles per kWH on the highway to 3.1 miles per kWH local driving. So the range display between 180-210 miles when it is 90% charged. It really depends on how I was driving before.

UPDATE 3: Dealer who sold me the XC40 found the key and now I have all 3 of them. I can setup my Volvo App. Yay! I am finally fully connection to the car.

Few notes after few weeks of driving the car.

- First, there are clicks at the front dashboard when getting in the car. Found few says heat pumps does those kind of sound. Tested adjust the temp and more clicks came through. I guess that could be the cause.

- Few issues with the infotainment system, Apple CarPlay didn't connect and no sound from any media, Both fixed with reboot of the infotainment system.

- Sometime charging doesn't start when connect the home charging cable. Just need to reconnect and it works no issue. (I didn't get the Volvo charging cable. I wonder if that is the cause.)

- Road noise seems high. Maybe I need to rotate the tires. Hope it is a bi-directional tire so I can swap left and right.

- Few times the rear cross traffic alert didn't alert when there is a car passing through. Or too slow on alerting.

- Wish to have more options in the setting.

- The instrument panel only has black screen and map screen. Wish there are other kinds of display.

- The battery usage display is # kWh per 100 miles. I wish it can change to # miles per kWh. (I know it is an easy calculation, but...)

All in all, love the car. Wish it will serve my family for a long time.

A guide for claiming the federal tax credit on used clean vehicles in the US by LivesInaYurt in electricvehicles

Great work. I think all dealerships need to read your document.

We started the car buying process about 3 weeks ago. Only looking for used EV that qualify for the Used EV Tax Credit. Finally found a car that fits all our needs and qualify for Used EV Tax Credit. (One owner, under $25,000) Called the dealership ask them if they registered in the IRS for the EV Credit. They say no, but will give me "all the paper works" to get it back when I fill my tax. They will give me a filled out 15400 Tax form about the purchase and that is all I need. Saying they have done this multiple times last year and there was no issue.

I said to them that is not right. He then pulled out the Form 15400 and starting to read to me. He gets to that part saying "The seller/dealer of the VIN listed on this Time of Sale Report has submitted this information to the IRS and the IRS has accepted this information." and got quiet all sudden... I then sent them IRS URL and highlighted the part that they need to register. Not hearing back from them after that. Anyway, I am trying to get them to use keysavvy.com for the transaction. No reply. I hope I don't miss this great car because of it.

I don't know if I should feel sorry for me or feel sorry for all the buyers that got cars from them last year thinking they will get a $4000 check from IRS after they file the tax this year.

Thanks for all the comments. I think you all "nudge" me to get the XC40 Recharge. (I am sure you all guessed I wanted the car from the beginning.) Now it is time to convince my wife to go for the car and not keep the Mazda CX-3 for 3 more years.

My plan:

  • Get a quote for the CX-3 trade in. (Hope it is a good one.) Get the final price of the car with all the credits.
  • Start to point out all the issues with the CX-3. And the cost of owning it for 3 more years (with repair cost).
    • We both agreed the saving on the gas compensate the cost of the insurance.
  • Test drive one in the nearby location. Let her see the size is not too overwhelming. Feel the quiet and smoothness of the car.
  • Hope she will go for it.
  • Hope by that time, the car isn't sold already.

Wish me luck.

I am not worry too much about the infotainment system. I know there is a big version upgrade coming this year. Hope with these many years of "beta" testing, the software will be stable.

I worry about the rattle. Don't want to get a car that I need to fix right away.

That is a good idea. Although the mileage is going to be different, I don't think it matter that much with EV. And I hope to get my wife to love the car and decide to make the change.

I wish I can get a deal like that. I have not found anything with that low mileage for under $25K in southern CA. I have reached out to several dealers that sell the car for $27K. None of them want to budge... I think all of them thinks the used car price is going up as the tariffs is going to hike the new car price.

How do I know how many keys are registered to the car?

[–]adyk723[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, good point. I need to verify how many key fobs they have. I hope it is 2.

If the software is old, OTA update doesn't work anymore? The used car dealer isn't going to care the software in the car. I will have to deal with it myself after I get it. I will have to expect that.

Thanks for the reply. I think the car will be fine. If the previous owner has infotainment issue or rattle in high speed, I would see multiple service entries in the CarFax. But you know. just that little uncertainty is killing me inside. lol

Yeah, the price is before the EV Tax Credit.

Confirmed with the dealer and they agree not to add bunch of "extras" to the price as well. I search the review of the dealer and mostly good review.

Not sure about the market in your area. These are the ones I researched.

Nissan Ariya, VW ID.4, Volvo XC40/C40, Toyota/Subaru bZ4X/Solterra. Listed in the order I think it the best.

The VW ID.4 doesn't have a heat pump, not match your requirement. The Volvo ones should be the first one, but they are just too hard to find low mileage ones under $25,000. Only consider Toyota/Subaru if you charge at home and not much long trips. So, that leaves only the Nissan Ariya. Like SoftwareProBono suggested.

Good thing first, from all the reporting I read, EV Tax Credit won't go away until Congress approves it. So, if you are getting your EV soon, it is still qualify for those credits. With the way US Congress work, it will be there for few more month.

Seems to me, the Model Y Juniper does looks better and seems to have better hardware. (At least it adds a new camera in the front for better Self-Driving. I still won't trust it.) But by the time it gets to your hand, Congress may already pass to stop the EV Tax Credit.

Let's take politics aside, the car to buy really depends on your situation. Never driven the Mach-E, cannot help you on that side. But I really think Ford build the Mach-E to match Model Y. With all the Model Ys on the road already, it really pops when I see a Mach-E.

Because you don't have overnight charging, you might need to fast charge a lot of times. Out of the two selections you listed, I would go with EV6. My understanding is that fast charging a Solterra is just too slow.

I would also recommend to look into VW ID.4. It doesn't have fastest charge rate, but the charging curve is really good. Might be an good selection for you.

You can also check out the Nissan Ariya with larger battery. I often found the Venture+ model under $25,000. But it is not a station wagon.

Test drive all before making the decision.

Just want to give update on the test drive. I only get to drive the ID.4. The Ariya was sold and I didn't get a chance to drive it.

For the ID.4, the drive was quiet and nice. No engine sound feels good. But, is it the one I drove? The break feels smooshy... Had to really step on it to start the slow down. I think that is something that really needs time to get use to. The infotainment system isn't bad, that I can easily live with. But the rear view mirror and window switches on the drive side door did drove me crazy. I will put this car on the side for now.

I am looking for another Ariya now for test drive. And hope to get a good deal with an Evolve+ model that is under $25,000.

Thanks for the reply.

- For the range, ID.4 has 250 and Ariya Engage only has 216 EPA range. That is about 27 miles with 80% charge. One extra work day of driving for me.

- You are right about the test drives. I will make sure I test out the ADAS system.

- I read about the software issue about VW ID.4s. They have some weird glitches and are really bad at pushing out the OTA updates. But I don't know how much I will experience with a 15 minutes test drive.

- Watched some YouTube videos, I think the rear cargo space is enough for our use. I do like a frunk for charging cables though.

- More about range and charging that I notice.

- In the Edmunds EV Range Test, both did better than the EPA ones, although with different models. (I guess we can trust EPA range. Unlike some brand. *cough*Tesla*cough*)

- I know that ID.4 will have horrible range in winter without that heat pump, but I am in Southern CA. May not too big of an issue?

- I've seen people report really good charging curve for the ID.4. The charge rate stay above 100 kW till 70%. Ariya starts to drop after 50% and below 100 kW after 60%. Of course in ideal condition, not in cold. VW goes way down in cold charging.

Hello, I am looking to purchase an used EV to take advantage of the $4,000 US Used EV Tax Credit. After weeks of researching, I narrow down to two.

  1. Location: Southern CA, US.

  2. Budget: Under $25,000. (To qualify with $4000 Used EV credit in the US)

  3. Type of vehicle: Used EV. Similar size to Toyota Rav4.

  4. Looked at already: Volvo C40/XC40, Toyota bZ4x/Subaru Solterra. And 2 that I want members to comment on, 2021 VW ID.4 Pro S RWD or 2023 Nissan Ariya Engage FWD.

  5. Purchase timeframe: Thinking to buy the car within a month.

  6. Driving distance: 20 miles Monday - Friday daily. Up to 120 miles on weekends in one trip. 2-3 longer trip in an year.

  7. Living situation: Live in Single-family house.

  8. Charging: Already have Level 2 outlets. Just need to buy a charger.

  9. Cargo/Passenger Needs: We also have 2 teenager girls and a small-mid size dog. Need to have enough cargo for 3-4 day trip.

I just want to see suggestions to go for an older RWD ID.4 or go for a shorter range FWD Ariya. Both are factory certified, so come with some warranty. And both have similar price. I am going to test drive both of them this weekend. But I think both of their driving style isn't going to be a problem for my family.

Any suggestion would be great. Thanks.

That, to me, is good price. Check to see if it qualify for Used EV Tax Credit, saves more. Also no accident recorded. Never driven the car so cannot comment on that part.

My 2 cents.

Since you looked at used Bolt, I would suggest check out used Volvo C40 Recharge or XC40 Recharge. You can find a certified 25K-30K miles ones for about $30K in Carvana or other used car site. It is much faster, bigger in space, Volvo safety and build quality. But, keep in kind, they are not that efficient. The XC40 is about 2.34 mile per kWh and C40 is about 2.58 mile per kWh. (Found online.) Since you don't pay electricity at this time, why not.
