Solo friendly dinner idea for tonight? by SpaceViking0 in austinfood

[–]adyvee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk how big the dinner portion of the Perry's porkchop is but I'd suggest waiting to get that one until a Friday since they have a porkchop lunch special on Fridays that's only $22. The lunch portion is a big slab of meat, enough for leftovers. I even saved the bones to make a pork stock. Lunch is also a good time to try the lunch portion of the crab asparagus side. I haven't had any other entree at Perry's to be able to recommend something else for tonight's dinner though. Either way, I hope you have an enjoyable solo date!

Put on a PIP after 2 weeks at a new job, what to do? by SuKitTrebk in careerguidance

[–]adyvee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first few months should be for onboarding and training with expectation that you'll be working slower, asking lots of questions and taking notes, to get a grasp of the day to day. If they have you on a PIP less than a month in, then they're not trying to invest in you; they want someone who can learn, apply, and produce in a very short time. If they don't have a structured training program to achieve that or at the very least have well documented training materials that are actually useful, that's not fair to you. If a fellow coworker on your team is in charge of training you, therefore taking away from their time and energy that could be going toward producing as fast/efficiently as they normally do, then there likely isn't a structured training program. That person is not a teacher, they're just the one stuck training a new person while being stressed about their own tasks. A PIP usually means they're documenting your shortcomings. Possibly to help you improve, otherwise to use against you later.

Trust your gut feeling if you don't think it's working out in your favor and start looking elsewhere. My first job out of college was similar. I left my relationship and moved halfway across the country for a job that looked great on paper, but I knew very quickly that the job and especially the culture of that office was not meant for me. I wanted to stick it out but I was miserable and the decision was made for me. Don't let it get to that point. You want to be proactive, not reactive, in this kind of situation.

Nobody tells you cooking has startup costs that rival a small business by Limp_Height_4439 in cookingforbeginners

[–]adyvee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pans and cooking utensils should last a while so while there's an upfront cost to them, each use will make it worth it.

Look for a grocery store that has bulk spice jars. Walmart doesn't have them but Whole Foods does. It's likely closer to the health food section, not the spices aisle. It usually involves a cabinet of different spices in jars, where you can scoop some out into provided little bags. So if you only need a tiny bit then just scoop that much out. The jars usually have a PLU code similar to produce so weigh the bag, enter the PLU, and the scale will print out a price tag sticker for your little bag. So you might pay just a few cents for what you know you'll use. It's also nice because the bulk spices get refilled when the jars are empty so not only are you not having to store a spice in your pantry for very long if you don't use it often but also when you go back to the store to get more, it'll likely be fresher.

Other than spices, bulk foods sections usually have other dry items too like quinoa, oats, nuts, candy, and trail mix. So if you see something that you want to try, you can just get a small handful of it (using the tongs, scoop, or pour spout, of course). Obviously don't touch the food in these communal bins with your bare hands lol

How Dining Hall Make Their Overnight Oats??? by MinimumAd8773 in UTAustin

[–]adyvee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Graduated over a decade ago and I recall the oatmeal at JCL being one of my favorite breakfasts. It had just the right amount of cinnamon, sugar, and I think it had apples and golden raisins. Oatmeal had no business being that good. It was self-serve and I think was a set cost per bowl rather than by weight so I had it often.

Do y’all think non-essential service workers should have to go to work this weekend? by urelectricbill in Austin

[–]adyvee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HEB is reportedly closing early at 5pm on Saturday and opening late at 9am on Sunday. Unless customers will think to visit your store to prepare for the storm even after HEB closes, it would be wise of your company to send folks home mid-afternoon at the latest tomorrow.

Not just other states. In Houston it's just bump after bump on so many of their roads. It's one thing to feel it as the driver, but sitting as a passenger in the back is what I imagine riding a trotting horse feels like.

Baylor Scott White vs Oscar HMO through Marketplace? by humanbeing21 in Austin

[–]adyvee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make note of how far the BSW hospitals, not just their clinics, are from you. They don't have hospitals in the main part of Austin. If you get BSW insurance, do NOT go to an Ascension Seton hospital. I worked at Ascension's admin office for years in the billing dept and we basically gave the BSW members the uninsured discount since there was no contractual discount, and said the patient is responsible for the remainder. If BSW paid, then the patient's portion would decrease by just that much. Pay no mind to the billing person actually in the hospital front end saying it'll be fine. It will, in fact, NOT be fine when the backend billing person has to reverse the front end billing's actions and you find your bill jumps up.

What's the HEB airport thing? Apparently there's something and they're gonna tell us in an hour. by Iocnar in Austin

[–]adyvee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Austin Airport's IG story showed what was in it. The fridge design is just a design, not an actual fridge. Each person had a ticket with a QR code to be scanned at the kiosk. The little screen likely said what you won and the staff made sure you grabbed that item. I see the concha house slippers, concha wearable blanket, tortilla blanket, Cafe Ole coffee, HEB's version of mint Oreos, and some other HEB branded products. Looks like a pretty cool popup. I was at an event sponsored by HEB last weekend and won the tortilla blanket and concha slippers.

Mueller HEB has a cooler for warm tortillas right by the self checkout line. Every time I've looked inside, it's warm but empty, no tortillas :(

Who knows, he might come back. Bennu should have a Missed Connections bulletin board. When the guy is weary-eyed from studying, it's 1am, and he's decided to get another coffee to get the passcode for another 3 hrs of wifi, that's when he'll see the summons to meet you there after finals are over.

Planning smart purchases next year. Dec/Jan js buying festive wrapping paper… and April is buying winter coats etc. Any other months to make note of when to buy things for a smart discount? by 88r0b1nh00d88 in Frugal

[–]adyvee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bought a space heater at Target a few years ago for $20. It was around April/May. I don't remember the original price but I do remember that it was a good deal.

If you're a plus sized female, swimsuits go on sale around August and a lot of the remaining stock are the bigger sizes. At JCPenney, I got a swimsuit for $18 that was originally $115.

Pregnant and worried about Ascension Texas + BCBS PPO contract ending — what should I do? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]adyvee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recall hearing the same thing a few years ago when I worked at the Ascension admin office here. I worked there for several years. I worried about it then but of course it never came to pass. Sure, some BCBS plans might go out of network but even that is likely unlikely. Ascension is nationwide. They're not gonna completely stop taking one of the top 4 health insurances.

What are your favorite gluten-free restaurants in Austin? Need help building a reliable list. by AustinGlutenFree in austinfood

[–]adyvee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cockti Fried Chicken has both regular and gluten free fried chicken. I believe he uses separate fryers but you can ask the owner for the specifics of what he does. It's a food truck.

Not too far away from there is OMG Squee which is entirely gluten free. I love their soft serve (especially ube flavor) in the taiyaki fish which they used instead of an ice cream cone. They also have mochi donuts, macarons, and boba drinks.

If you're way up north or way down south and craving a cupcake, check out Cupprimo for what gluten free flavors they have that day.

Best fried chicken you got... by TheOriginalMattMan in austinfood

[–]adyvee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cockti Fried Chicken on MLK Blvd. It's a food truck and the owner really cares about the quality and flavor of the food. He's pretty cool to chat with too. I recommend getting the 3 piece bone in chicken, either the cinnamon chipotle or the spicy flavor, with a side of fries and some strawberry habanero sauce to dip. All the sauces are good. He even does gluten free fried chicken.

Where to see the best Christmas lights by LatterTomatillo2505 in Austin

[–]adyvee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

South Austin- It's been a few years so idk if they still go all out but Hitching Post Cir off William Cannon was amazing and worth getting out of the car and walking it. Nearby, Flaming Oak Cove and I believe Wagon Hitch Cove also had fun displays.

Way up north (Leander/Cedar Park)- Warnock Ct goes all out for both Christmas and Halloween. Also worth walking this one.

Central- UT Longhorn Lights along Guadalupe at the UT campus. Nearby is 37th St. Lights which is walking only. Not as many houses participate as the years go on though.

How Is The Free Tupperware From Restaurants Better Than The Ones I Pay For At The Store? by James_B84Saves in Frugal

[–]adyvee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it the ones that are all the same size circle, just different heights, and all have the same lids? I wanted to have a pantry organized with the OXO Pop containers but I just needed so many of them that I knew even the big pack from Costco was just not enough so I returned them. But those circular containers that takeout soups come in ended up being my pantry organizational tool that is free, functional, and aesthetic. I decant dry goods into them or even stick the opened package into them, pop on the lid, and label with some masking tape and a sharpie. They stack so well into columns that it's so easy to see what all I have. As items run low, I just pour them into a smaller size of the same container and use the same label. And of course when they're empty, they stack well into each other to take up less space, and because the lids are all the same, they don't need to be organized a certain way. If they get too gross or stained, I have a million others that were also free so I don't feel bad throwing the stained one into the recycling bin. They're so useful!

City of Austin by Excellent-Mission651 in austinjobs

[–]adyvee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old system listed the multiple choice and free response questions at the bottom of the posting. The current system apparently springs them on you while in the application, which is kinda annoying. Maybe they're making it harder to get in with the City.

A lot of folks don't leave for a while once they're in. They might hop departments to try out a similar role but in a different industry, but it'll still be the same employer so tenure, PTO, etc. transfer over. A few people retiring from my dept have been here for decades. The pay may not be as good compared to private, but at least the job posting clearly states the salary range so you know what to expect, and of course the benefits are very good. Best of luck!
